Background:Sulfur mustard(SM)is a chemical warfare vesicant that severely injures exposed eyes,lungs,and *** hydrochloride(NM)is widely used as an SM *** study aimed to develop a depilatory double-disc(DDD)NM skin burn model for investigating vesicant pharmacotherapy ***:Hair removal method(clipping only versus clipping followed by a depilatory),the effect of acetone in the vesicant administration vehicle,NM dose(0.5-20μmol),vehicle volume(5-20μl),and time course(0.5-21 days)were investigated using male and female CD-1 ***,an indicator of burn response,was assessed by biopsy skin *** ideal NM dose to induce partial-thickness burns was assessed by edema and histopathologic *** optimized DDD model was validated using an established reagent,NDH-4338,a cyclooxygenase,inducible nitric oxide synthase,and acetylcholinesterase inhibitor ***:Clipping/depilatory resulted in a 5-fold higher skin edematous response and was highly reproducible(18-fold lower%CV)compared to clipping *** did not affect edema *** edema occurred 24-48 h after NM administra-tion using optimized dosing methods and *** partial-thickness burns were achieved with 5μmol of NM and responded to treatment with *** dif-ferences in burn edematous responses were observed between males and ***:A highly reproducible and sensitive partial-thickness skin burn model was developed for assessing vesicant pharmacotherapy *** model pro-vides clinically relevant wound severity and eliminates the need for organic solvents that induce changes to the skin barrier function.

Hausmannite is a common low valence Mn oxide mineral,with a distorted spinel structure,in surficial *** natural Mn oxides often contain various impurities of transitional metals(TMs),few studies have addressed the effect and related mechanism of TM doping on the reactivity of hausmannite with metal ***,the reactivity of cobalt(Co)doped hausmannite with aqueous As(Ⅲ)and As(Ⅴ)was *** doping decreased the point of zero charge of hausmannite and its adsorption capacity for As(Ⅴ).despite a reduction of the initial As(Ⅲ)oxidation rate,Co-doped hausmannite could effectively oxidize As(Ⅲ)to As(Ⅴ),followed by the adsorption and fixation of a large amount of As(Ⅴ)on the mineral *** K-edge EXAFS analysis of the samples after As(Ⅴ)adsorption and As(Ⅲ)oxidation revealed that only As(Ⅴ)was adsorbed on the mineral surface,with an average As-Mn distance of 3.25–3.30 A,indicating the formation of bidentate binuclear *** results provide new insights into the interaction mechanism between TMs and low valence Mn oxides and their effect on the geochemical behaviors of metal pollutants.

Antenna-assisted picosecond control of nanoscale phase transition in vanadium dioxide

Nanoscale devices in which the interaction with light can be configured using external control signals hold great interest for next-generation optoelectronic *** exhibiting a structural or electronic phase transition offer a large modulation contrast with multi-level optical switching and memory *** addition,plasmonic nanoantennas can provide an efficient enhancement mechanism for both the optically induced excitation and the readout of materials strategically positioned in their local ***,we demonstrate picosecond all-optical switching of the local phase transition in plasmonic antenna-vanadium dioxide(VO_(2))hybrids,exploiting strong resonant field enhancement and selective optical pumping in plasmonic ***-and wavelength-dependent pump–probe spectroscopy of multifrequency crossed antenna arrays shows that nanoscale optical switching in plasmonic hotspots does not affect neighboring antennas placed within 100 nm of the excited *** antenna-assisted pumping mechanism is confirmed by numerical model calculations of the resonant,antenna-mediated local heating on a picosecond time *** hybrid,nanoscale excitation mechanism results in 20 times reduced switching energies and 5 times faster recovery times than a VO_(2) film without antennas,enabling fully reversible switching at over two million cycles per second and at local switching energies in the picojoule *** hybrid solution of antennas and VO_(2) provides a conceptual framework to merge the field localization and phase-transition response,enabling precise,nanoscale optical memory functionalities.

Alcohol-associated liver disease(ALD)is a common chronic liver disease and major contributor to liver disease-related deaths *** its prevalence,there are few effective pharmacological options for the severe stages of this *** much pre-clinical research attention is paid to drug development in ALD,many of these experimental therapeutics have limitations such as poor pharmacokinetics,poor efficacy,or off-target side effects due to systemic *** means of addressing these limitations is through liver-targeted drug delivery,which can be accomplished with different platforms including liposomes,polymeric nanoparticles,exosomes,bacteria,and adenoassociated viruses,among *** platforms allow drugs to target the liver passively or actively,thereby reducing systemic circulation and increasing the‘effective dose’in the *** many studies,some clinical,have applied targeted delivery systems to other liver diseases such as viral hepatitis or hepatocellular carcinoma,only few have investigated their efficacy in *** review provides basic information on these liver-targeting drug delivery platforms,including their benefits and limitations,and summarizes the current research efforts to apply them to the treatment of ALD in rodent *** also discuss gaps in knowledge in the field,which when addressed,may help to increase the efficacy of novel therapies and better translate them to humans.

The auditory system of mammals enables the perception of sound from our surrounding *** some of the smallest bones in the body,the ear transduces complex acoustic signals with high-temporal sensitivity to complex mechanical vibrations with magnitudes as small as tens of *** of the shape and acoustically induced motions of different components of the ear are essential if we are to expand our understanding of hearing mechanisms,and also provide quantitative information for the development of numerical ear models that can be used to improve hearing protection,clinical diagnosis,and repair of damaged or diseased *** are developing digital holographic methods and instrumentation using an ultra-high speed camera to measure shape and acoustically-induced motions in the middle *** we study the eardrum,the first structure of the middle ear which initializes the acoustic-mechanical transduction of sound for *** measurement system is capable of performing holographic measurement at rates up to 2.1 M frames per *** shape measurement modalities had previously been implemented into our holographic systems:(1)a multi-wavelength method with a wavelength tunable laser;and(2)a multi-angle illumination method with a single wavelength *** this paper,we present a third method using a miniaturized fringe projection system with a microelectromechanical system(MEMS)***,we optimize the processing of large data sets of holographic displacement measurements using a vectorized Pearson's correlation *** validate and compare the shape and displacement measurements of our methodologies using a National Institute of Standards and Technology(NIST)traceable gauge and sound-activated latex membranes and human eardrums.

Pramipexole in Treatment Resistant depression: A Case Review

Pramipexole is a dopamine agonist used in the treatment of Parkinson’s disease and Restless legs syndrome. Although off-label, the use of Pramipexole as an adjunct therapy in treatment resistant depression has recently been documented in the literature with promising results. We present a 75-year-old male with MDD who has failed trials of SSRIs, SNRIs, TCAs, SGA, TMS, Ketamine, and ECT who was initiated on Pramipexole. We discuss, based on existing literature, the probability of a favorable long-term response to Pramipexole and the potential side effects for our patient. We also highlight the need for future studies designed to test the efficacy of Pramipexole in geriatric patients with TRD.

Minimally invasive treatment of pancreatic necrosis

AIM: To systematically review these minimally invasive approaches to infected pancreatic necrosis. METHODS: We used the MEDLINE database to investigate studies between 1996 and 2010 with greater than 10 patients that examined these techniques. Using a combination of Boolean operators, reports were retrieved addressing percutaneous therapy (341 studies), endoscopic necrosectomy (574 studies), laparoscopic necrosectomy via a transperitoneal approach (148 studies), and retroperitoneal necrosectomy (194 studies). Only cohorts with at least 10 or more patients were included. Non-English papers, letters, animal studies, duplicate series and reviews without original data were excluded, leaving a total of 27 studies for analysis. RESULTS: Twenty-seven studies with 947 patients total were examined (eight studies on percutaneous approach; ten studies on endoscopic necrosectomy; two studies on laparoscopic necrosectomy via a transperitoneal approach; five studies on retroperitoneal necrosectomy; and two studies on a combined percutaneous-retroperitoneal approach). Success rate, complications, mortality, and number of procedures were outcomes that were included in the review. We found that most published reports were retrospective in nature, and thus, susceptible to selection and publication bias. Few reports examined these techniques in a comparative, prospective manner. CONCLUSION: Each minimally invasive approach though was found to be safe and feasible in multiple reports. With these new techniques, treatment of infected pancreatic necrosis remains a challenge. We advocate a multidisciplinary approach to this complex problem with treatment individualized to each patient.

Hematological changes during androgen deprivation therapy

Androgen deprivation therapy （ADT） has been associated with a plethora of adverse effects, consistent with the androgen dependency of multiple reproductive and somatic tissues. One such tissue is the hemopoietic system, and one of the most predictable consequences of ADT is the development of anemia. Although anemia caused by ADT is rarely severe, ADT is often given to frail, elderly men with increased susceptibility to anemia due to multiple other causes. ADT-associated anemia may contribute to fatigue and reduced quality of life （QoL） in such men, although this requires further study. While anemia is an independent risk factor of mortality in men with prostate cancer, it is not known whether treatment of ADT-associated anemia alters clinically important outcomes, or whether treatment affects mortality. Awareness of the phenomenon of ADT-induced anemia should avoid unnecessary work-up in mild cases of normocytic normochromic anemia. However, assessment and treatment of more severe anemia may be required. This should be determined on an individual basis. In contrast to the weli-descrihed actions of ADT on erythropoiesis, its effect on other hemopoietic lineages has been less well elucidated. While preclinical studies have found roles for androgens in maturation and differentiated function of neutrophils, lymphocytes and platelets, the implications of these findings for men with prostate cancer receiving ADT require further studies.

Handling query skew in large indexes： a view based approach

Indexing is one of the most important tech- niques to facilitate query processing over a multi-dimensional dataset. A commonly used strategy for such indexing is to keep the tree-structured index balanced. This strategy reduces query processing cost in the worst case, and can handle all different queries equally well. In other words, this strategy implies that all queries are uniformly issued, which is par- tially because the query distribution is not possibly known and will change over time in practice. A key issue we study in this work is whether it is the best to fully rely on a bal- anced tree-structured index in particular when datasets be- come larger and larger in the big data era. This means that, when a dataset becomes very large, it becomes unreasonable to assume that all data in any subspace are equally important and are uniformly accessed by all queries at the index level. Given the existence of query skew and the possible changes of query skew, in this paper, we study how to handle such query skew and such query skew changes at the index level without sacrifice of supporting any possible queries in a well- balanced tree index and without a high overhead. To tackle the issue, we propose index-view at the index level, where an index-view is a short-cut in a balanced tree-structured index to access objects in the subspaces that are more frequently accessed, and propose a new index-view-centric framework for query processing using index-views in a bottom-up man- ner. We study index-views selection problem in both static and dynamic setting, and we confirm the effectiveness of our approach using large real and synthetic datasets.
