Despite substantial efforts at early diagnosis, accurate staging and advanced treatments, esophageal cancer(EC) continues to be an ominous disease worldwide. Risk factors for esophageal carcinomas include obesity, gastroesophageal reflux disease, hard-alcohol use and tobacco smoking. Five-year survival rates have improved from 5% to 20% since the 1970 s, the result of advances in diagnostic staging and treatment. As the most sensitive test for locoregional staging of EC, endoscopic ultrasound(EUs) influences the development of an optimal oncologic treatment plan for a significant minority of patients with early cancers, which appropriately balances the risks and benefits of surgery, chemotherapy and radiation. EUs is costly, and may not be available at all centers. Thus, the yield of EUs needs to be thoughtfully considered for each patient. Localized intramucosal cancers occasionally require endoscopic resection(ER) for histologic staging or treatment; EUs evaluation may detect suspicious lymph nodes prior to exposing the patient to the risks of ER. Although positron emission tomography(PET) has been increasingly utilized in staging EC, it may be unnecessary for clinical staging of early, localized EC and carries the risk of false-positive metastasis(over staging). In EC patients with evidence of advanced disease, EUs or PET may be used to define the radiotherapy field. Multimodality staging with EUs, crosssectional imaging and histopathologic analysis of ER, remains the standard-of-care in the evaluation of early esophageal cancers. Herein, published data regarding use of EUs for intramucosal, local, regional and metastatic esophageal cancers are reviewed. An algorithm to illustrate the current use of EUs at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center is presented.

Many lakes in southeastern Wisconsin(the metropolitan-Milwaukee area) are gradually becoming increasingly "salty".While these waterbodies would not be considered presently to be saline lakes,there has been a rapid increase in the chloride concentrations in most of these lakes over the last 30 years,with the lakes increasing from a mean chloride concentration of about 19 mg/L to over 100 mg/L in some *** ecological impacts can be expected when chloride values exceed 250 mg/L,the rate of increase presents a basis for concern,especially since the underlying geology of the region is based on limestone/dolomite which is deficient in ***,the origin of the chlorides is anthropogenic:human and industrial wastewaters(treatment of which has effected improvements in trophic status but has not affected other water-borne contaminants) and winter de-icing practices based upon large quantities of sodium chloride are major contributors to the increasing concentrations of chloride in the region's *** taking remedial measures,the rate of salinization is expected to continue to increase,resulting,ultimately,in the alteration of the freshwater systems in the region.

Advances in stem cell science and potential clinical applications have brought clinical medicine closer to the actualization of Regenerative Medicine—an extension of transplantation of organs and cells and implantation of bioprosthetics and biodevices. The goal of such therapeutics will be intervention prior to onset of severe individual disability, enhance organ function and enhance patient performance status without incurring the economic impacts of standard organ transplantation. Regenerative Medicine is already demonstrating proof of principle or efficacy in restora- tion of myocardial contractility, joint mobility and function, immune competence, pulmonary function, immunologic self- tolerance, motor function and normal hemoglobin production with the next targets—diabetes mellitus (type I and type II), neurologic injury, hepatic dysfunction preparing to enter trials. Expenditures on health care needs of an aging U.s. citizenry approximate 20-25% ($3 trillion) of U.s. GDP currently and may to grow to 40% of U.s. GDP by 2025. As the potential of Regenerative Medicine is clinically realized, the societal impact and economic benefits will be disproportionately magnified in the economies of industrialized nations. The experi- ence of the Department of Health and Human services (HHs), United Network for Organ sharing (UNOs), the National Bone Marrow Donor Registry (NBMDR), and the National Vaccine Injury Compensation Programs (NVICP) can help ensure that as Regenerative Medicine strives to achieve clinical benefits while avoiding decimation of therapeutic options by product liability and medical malpractice concerns—concerns that crippled the U.s. vaccine manufacturing industry until the creation of the NVICP. In this study, we demonstrate an approach for inverting earthquake source parameters based on high-rate global positioning system （GPs） velocity seismograms. The velocity records obtained from single-station GPs velocity solutions with broadcast ephemeris are used directly for earthquake source parameter inversion using the Cut and Paste method, without requiring conversion of the velocity records into displacement records. Taking the E1 Mayor-Cucapah earthquake as an example, GPs velocity records from 10 stations with reasonable azimuthal coverage provide earthquake source parameters very close to those from the Global centroid moment tensor （Global CMT） solution. In sparse network tests, robust source parameters with acceptable bias can be achieved with as few as three stations. When the number of stations is reduced to two, the bias in rake angle becomes appreciable, but the magnitude and strike estimations are still robust. The results of this study demonstrate that rapid and reliable estimation of earthquake source parameters can be obtained from GPs velocity data. These parameters could be used for early earthquake warning and shake map construction, because such GPs velocity records can be obtained in real time.

Location-based social network （LBsN） is at the forefront of emerging trends in social network services （sNs） since the users in LBsN are allowed to ＂check-in＂ the places （locations） when they visit them. The accurate geographi- cal and temporal information of these check-in actions are provided by the end-user GPs-enabled mobile devices, and recorded by the LBsN system. In this paper, we analyze and mine a big LBsN data, Gowalla, collected by us. First, we investigate the relationship between the spatio-temporal co- occurrences and social ties, and the results show that the co- occurrences are strongly correlative with the social ties. sec- ond, we present a study of predicting two users whether or not they will meet （co-occur） at a place in a given future time, by exploring their check-in habits. In particular, we first intro- duce two new concepts, bag-of-location and bag-of-time-lag, to characterize user＇s check-in habits. Based on such bag rep- resentations, we define a similarity metric called habits sim- ilarity to measure the similarity between two users＇ check-in habits. Then we propose a machine !earning formula for pre- dicting co-occurrence based on the social ties and habits sim- ilarities. Finally, we conduct extensive experiments on our dataset, and the results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.
