The purpose of this paper is to explore the promise of utilizing some relatively new feedback control techniques in ecosystem management. First, we set forth a basic ecological-economic model of a predator-prey-hunting system in which both the predator and prey have use(flow) and non-use(stock) value and when the predator can inflict transboundary damages. We then use new data from the US Mountain West to show how a particular feedback approach—linear parameter-varying(LPV) control—can be utilized in this context. Our LPV model is able to quantify the cost of managing disturbances that inevitably arise as a manager tries to keep the actual path of the system "close" to its optimum. The results suggest management strategies in mountain ecosystems that feature large, mammalian carnivores.

Video cameras are common at volcano observatories,but their utility is often limited during periods of crisis due to the large data volume from continuous acquisition and time requirements for manual *** cameras to serve as effective monitoring tools,video frames must be synthesized into relevant time series signals and further analyzed to classify and characterize observable *** this study,we use computer vision and machine learning algorithms to identify periods of volcanic activity and quantify plume rise velocities from video *** were collected at Villarrica Volcano,chile from two visible band cameras located^17 km from the vent that recorded at 0.1 and 30 frames per second between February and April *** these two months,Villarrica exhibited a diverse range of eruptive activity,including a paroxysmal eruption on 3 *** to and after the eruption,activity included nighttime incandescence,dark and light emissions,inactivity,and periods of cloud *** quantify the color and spatial extent of plume emissions using a blob detection algorithm,whose outputs are fed into a trained artificial neural network that categorizes the observable activity into five *** shifts from primarily nighttime incandescence to ash emissions following the 3 March paroxysm,which likely relates to the reemergence of the buried lava *** periods exhibiting plume emissions are further analyzed using a row and column projection algorithm that identifies plume onsets and calculates apparent plume horizontal and vertical rise *** onsets are episodic,occurring with an average period of^50 s and suggests a puffing style of degassing,which is commonly observed at ***,the lack of clear acoustic transients in the accompanying infrasound record suggests puffing may be controlled by atmospheric effects rather than a degassing regime at the *** presented here offer a generalized toolset for volcano monito

Recent technological change and the economic upheaval it has produced are coded by social meanings. cultural codes not only trigger technological and economic changes, but also provide pathways to control them, allowing the dem- ocratic practices of independent journalism to be sustained in new forms. Even as they successfully defend their professional ethics, however, journalists experience them as vulnerable to subversion in the face of technological and economic change. Indeed, independent journalists and the social groups who support them often feel as if they are losing the struggle for autonomy. Just as current anxieties have been triggered by computerization and digital news, so were earlier crises of journalism linked to technological shifts that demanded new forms of economic organization. Digital production has created extraordinary organizational upheaval and economic strain. At the same time, critical confrontations with digital production have trig- gered innovative organizational forms that allow new technologies to sustain, rather than undermine, the democratic culture and institution of news production. If news producers are making efforts to adapt professional journalism to the digital age while maintaining journalistic civil values, there are parallel adaptations from the digital side： digital journalism becoming more like professional journalism.

The essays that follow in this Special Section were initially formulated as contributions to a forthcoming book, The crisis of Journalism Reconsidered： cultural Power （Alexander et al. 2015）. They are its three pivotal essays, presenting the most theoretically developed and empirically grounded exemplifications of the cultural- sociological approach that makes the volume distinct. As the reader will see, it is because these essays are cultural-sociological that they are able to bring a dramatically different perspective to bear on the contemporary crisis of journalism. Rather than seeing technological and economic change as the primary causes of current anxieties, each essay draws special attention to the role played by the cultural commitments of journalism itself. Each links the professional ethics to the democratic aspirations of the broader societies in which journalists ply their craft, insisting that new digital technologies are being shaped to sustain value commitments rather than undermining them. In this brief introduction to the Special Section, I provide a broader context for the distinctive perspective that informs these three essays. First, I contrast the cultural-sociological approach with the reductionism that marks other contemporary approaches to journalism. Second, I situate cultural sociology theoretically in the broad historical arc of social thought.

The Stem cell Ophthalmology Treatment Study （ScOTS） is currently the largest-scale stem cell ophthal- mology trial registered at *** （identifier： NcT01920867）. ScOTS utilizes autologous bone marrow-derived stem cells （BMScs） to treat optic nerve and retinal diseases. Treatment approaches include a combination of retrobulbar, subtenon, intravitreal, intra-optic nerve, subretinal, and intravenous injection of autologous BMScs according to the nature of the disease, the degree of visual loss, and any risk factors related to the treatments. Patients with Leber＇s hereditary optic neuropathy had visual acuity gains on the Early Treatment Diabetic Retinopathy Study （ETDRS） of up to 35 letters and Snellen acuity improvements from hand motion to 20/200 and from counting fingers to 20/100. Visual field improvements were noted. Macular and optic nerve head nerve fiber layer typically thickened. No serious complications were seen. The increases in visual acuity obtained in our study were encouraging and suggest that the use of autolo- gous BMScs as provided in ScOTS for ophthalmologic mitochondrial diseases including Leber＇s hereditary optic neuropathy may be a viable treatment option.

We present the results from a patient with relapsing optic neuropathy treated within the Stem cell Ophthalmology Treatment Study （ScOTS）. ScOTS is an Institutional Review Board ap- proved clinical trial and has become the largest ophthalmology stem cell study registered at the National Institutes of Health to date （*** Identifier NcT 01920867）. ScOTS utilizes autologous bone marrow-derived stem cells （BMScs） for treatment of retinal and optic nerve diseases. Pre-treatment and post-treatment comprehensive eye exams of a 54 year old female patient were performed both at the Florida Study center, USA and at The Eye center of columbus, USA. As a consequence of a relapsing optic neuritis, the patient＇s previously normal visual acuity decreased to between 20/350 and 20/400 in the right eye and to 20/70 in the left eye. Significant visual field loss developed bilaterally. The patient underwent a right eye vitrectomy with injection of BMScs into the optic nerve of the right eyeand retrobulbar, subtenon and in- travitreal injection of BMScs in the left eye. At 15 months after ScOTS treatment, the patient＇s visual acuity had improved to 20/150 in the right eye and 20/20 in the left eye. Bilateral visual fields improved markedly. Both macular thickness and fast retinal nerve fiber layer thickness were maximally improved at 3 and 6 months after ScOTS treatment. The patient also reduced her mycophenylate dose from 1,500 mg per day to 500 mg per day and required no steroid pulse therapy during the 15-month follow up.

We report results in a 77-year-old male patient with visual loss from long-standing serpiginous choroidop- athy treated with bone marrow derived stem cells （BMSc） within the Stem cell Ophthalmology Treatment Study （ScOTS）. ScOTS is an Institutional Review Board approved clinical trial and the largest ophthal- mology stem cell study registered at the National Institutes of Health to date （*** Identifier： NcT01920867）. Eight months after treatment by a combination of retrobulbar, subtenon, intravitreal and intravenous injection of BMSc, the patient＇s best corrected Snellen acuity improved from 20/80- to 20/60.1 in the right eye and from 20/50- to 20/20 3 in the left eye. The Early Treatment of Diabetic Retinopathy Study （ETDRS） visual acuity continued to improve over the succeeding 8 months and the optical coherence tomography macular volume increased. The increases in visual acuity and macular volume are encouraging and suggest that the use of BMSc as provided in ScOTS may be a viable approach to treating serpiginous choroidopathy.
