In.this pa.er, a.compa.ison.of the on.et, cessa.ion.a.0} dura.ion.of the ra.n. sea.on.ha. been.ca.ried out usin. simula.ed ra.n.a.l da.a.from the fourth gen.ra.ion.Region.l Clima.e Model (RegCM4) a.0} ra.n.ga.ge mea.uremen.s from Gha.0} Meteorologica. a.en.y (GMet), coverin. a.period of 1998 to 2012. Simila. on.et a.0} cessa.ion.da.es were seen.in.both the simula.ed a.0} gua.e ra.n.a.l mea.uremen.s for the va.ious a.ro-ecologica. zon.s, resultin. in.simila. dura.ion.of the ra.n. sea.on. The a.era.e dura.ion.of the ra.n. sea.on.were less tha.0}200 da.s for the sa.a.0}a. a.0} coa.ta. zon.s wherea. the dura.ion.of the ra.n. sea.on.were beyon. 200 da.s for the forest a.0} tra.0}ition.zon.s. The bia. of these compa.ison. wa. less tha.0}30 da.s a.0} the root mea.0}squa.e error (RMSE) va.ues were less tha.0}15 da.s for a.l sta.ion., except Sa.tpon.. Sa.ellite ra.n.a.l estima.es ha.e predomin.n.ly been.used for clima.e impa.t studies due to poor ra.n.ga.ge n.twork in.sub-Sa.a.a.0}a.rica. However, there a.e limited microsca.e studies within.the sub-region.tha. ha.e a.sessed the performa.0}e of these sa.ellite products, which is the focus of the presen. study. This pa.er therefore con.iders va.ida.ion.of Tropica. Ra.n.a.l Mea.urin. Mission.(TRMM) a.0} Fa.in. Ea.ly Wa.n.n. System (FEWS) sa.ellite estima.es with ra.n.ga.ge mea.uremen.s over a.ha.0}i region.of Gha.0}. First, a.con.isten.y a.sessmen. of the two ga.ge da.a.products, the a.toma.ic Ra.n.Ga.ge (a.G) a.0} Gha.0} Meteorologica. a.en.y (GMet) Sta.0}a.d Ra.n.Ga.ge (SRG) mea.uremen.s, wa. performed. This showed a.very good a.reemen. with correla.ion.coefficien. of 0.99. Secon.ly, sa.ellite ra.n.a.l products from TRMM a.0} FEWS were va.ida.ed with the two ga.ge mea.uremen.s. Va.ida.ion.results showed good a.reemen. with correla.ion.coefficien.s of 0.6 a.0} 0.7 for TRMM a.0} FEWS with SRG, a.0} 0.87 a.0} 0.86 for TRMM a.0} FEWS with a.G respectively. Proba.ility Of Detection.(POD) a.0} Volumetric Hit In.ex (VHI) were foun. to be grea.er tha.0}0.9. Volumetric Critica. Success In.ex (VCSI) wa. 0.9 a.0} 0.8 for TRMM a.0} FEWS respectively with low Fa.se a.a.m Ra.io (Fa.) a.0} in.ign.fica.0} Volumetric Miss In.ex (VMI). In.gen.ra., rela.ively low bia.es a.0} RMSE va.ues were observed. The bia.es were less tha.0}1.3 a.0} 0.8 for TRMM a.0} FEWS-RFE respectively. These in.ica.e high ra.n.a.l detection.ca.a.ilities of both sa.ellite products. In.a.dition. both TRMM a.0} FEWS were a.le to ca.ture the on.et, pea. a.0} cessa.ion.of the ra.n. sea.on. a. well a. the dry spells. a.though TRMM a.0} FEWS sometimes un.er/overestima.ed ra.n.a.l, they ha.e the poten.ia. to be used for a.ricultura. a.0} other hydro-clima.ic impa.t studies over the region. This pa.er proposes a.modified version.of the Dwa.f Mon.oose Optimiza.ion.a.gorithm (IDMO) for con.tra.n.d en.in.erin. design.problems. This optimiza.ion.techn.que modifies the ba.e a.gorithm (DMO) in.three simple but effective wa.s. First, the a.pha.selection.in.IDMO differs from the DMO, where eva.ua.in. the proba.ility va.ue of ea.h fitn.ss is just a.computa.ion.l overhea. a.0} con.ributes n.thin. to the qua.ity of the a.pha.or other group members. The fittest dwa.f mon.oose is selected a. the a.pha. a.0} a.n.w opera.or ω is in.roduced, which con.rols the a.pha.movemen., thereby en.a.0}in. the explora.ion.a.ility a.0} exploita.ility of the IDMO. Secon., the scout group movemen.s a.e modified by ra.0}omiza.ion.to in.roduce diversity in.the sea.ch process a.0} explore un.isited a.ea.. Fin.lly, the ba.ysitter's excha.0}e criterium is modified such tha. on.e the criterium is met, the ba.ysitters tha. a.e excha.0}ed in.era.t with the dwa.f mon.oose excha.0}in. them to ga.n.in.orma.ion.a.out food sources a.0} sleepin. moun.s, which could result in.better-fitted mon.ooses in.tea. of in.tia.izin. them a.resh a. don. in.DMO, then.the coun.er is reset to zero. In.most ca.es, the results show tha. solution. a.hieved by the IDMO a.e better tha.0}those obta.n.d by the existin. a.gorithms.
