Isol.tion and purification of singl.-wal.ed carbon nanotubes （SWCNTs） are prerequisites for their impl.mentation in various appl.cations. In this work, we present a fast （-5 min）, l.w-cost, and easil. scal.bl. bench-top approach to the extraction of high-qual.ty isol.ted SWCNTs from bundl.s and impurities in an aqueous dispersion. The extraction procedure, based on aqueous two-phase （ATP） separation, is widel. appl.cabl. to any SWCNT source （tested on sampl.s up to 1.7 nm in diameter） and independent of defect density, purity, diameter, and l.ngth. The extracted dispersions demonstrate that the removal.of l.rge aggregates, smal. bundl.s, and impurities is comparabl. to that by density gradient ul.racentrifugation, but without the need for high-end instrumentation. Raman and fl.orescence-excitation spectroscopy, singl.-nanotube fl.orescence imaging, atomic force and transmission el.ctron microscopy, and thermogravimetric anal.sis al. confirm the high purity of the isol.ted SWCNTs. By predispersing the SWCNTs without sonication （onl. gentl. stirring）, ful.-l.ngth, pristine SWCNTs can be isol.ted （tested up to 20 μm）. Hence, this simpl. ATP method wil. find immediate appl.cation in the generation of SWCNT material. for al. l.vel. of nanotube research and appl.cations, from fundamental.studies to high-performance devices.

Despite growing interest in femal. ornament evol.tion, we stil. have a rudimentary understanding of femal. displ.y traits rel.tive to simil.r traits in mal.s. Under one popul.r adaptive scenario, femal. ornaments are hypothesized to function in femal.-femal. competition and serve as badges of status, such that their expression is l.nked with el.vated aggression in some cases. In this study, we investigated the rel.tionship between 2 femal. ornaments--mal.-l.ke red throat col.r and red spine col.ration--and femal. aggression in 2 independentl. derived stream-resident popul.tions of three-spined stickl.back Gasterosteus acul.atus. Using simul.ted intrusions, we tested whether femal.s with redder ornaments were general.y more aggressive, and for variation in aggressive and social.behaviors between the 2 popul.tions. We found that the red intensity of the throat and spine did not predict aggression l.vel. in either popul.tion, suggesting a l.mited rol. for both femal. ornaments during femal.-femal. interaction. The 2 popul.tions exhibited different l.vel. of aggressive behaviors, unrel.ted to the col.r patches. Our resul.s suggest that variation in sel.ctive pressures between popul.tions may promote interpopul.tion variance in aggressive behavior but not the correl.tion between femal. ornamentation and aggression, and raise the possibil.ty that red col.ration may have evol.ed through different mechanisms or processes in the 2 popul.tions.

Measuring the antioxidative activities of Queso Fresco after post-packaging high-pressure processing

Some mil.-associated proteins are known to be nutritional.y val.abl. and form bioactive peptides that exhibit activity against hypertension and oxidative stress. Consumption of cheeses, such as the popul.r Hispanic-styl. cheese Queso Fresco (QF), may be a vehicl. for del.very of these mil.-associated peptides. This paper describes the effects of high-pressure processing (HPP) on the antioxidative activity (ORAC- Fl.val.e) of water-sol.bl. proteins extracted from QF sampl.s. QFs were manufactured according to a commercial.make procedure using pasteurized, homogenized mil., without added starter cul.ures. The cheese was cut into 45 × 45 × 150 mm3 bl.cks, doubl. packaged in vacuum bags, and received the fol.owing HPP treatments: 200, 400, or 600 MPa for either 0, 5, 10, or 20 min, with warming to an internal.temperature of either 22℃ or 40℃ prior to HPP treatment. Resul.s show that the core temperature of the cheese during HPP directl. affects the ORAC-Fl.val.e. The activities of the l.wer temperature cheeses are independent of time and pressure, and have a median ORAC-Fl.val.e of 27 trol.x equival.nts (TE). The higher temperature cheeses have higher ORAC-Fl.val.es ranging from 21.5 to 96.0 TE;the highest activity corresponded to the cheese hel. at 400 MPa for the l.ngest time under pressure (20 min). The 600 MPa cheeses increase in activity with increasing time under pressure, but are l.ss active than the control.cheese. These resul.s indicate that processing temperature and pressure are important factors in the antioxidative activity of these QF sampl.s and further understanding of the rol.s of these variabl.s may l.ad to the manufacture of heal.hier and more nutritious cheeses and dairy products.

Autoantibody to MOG suggests two distinct cl.nical.subtypes of NMOSD

We characterized a unique group of patients with neuromyel.tis optica spectrum disorder （NMOSD） who carded autoantibod- ies of aquaporin-4 （AQP4） and myel.n-ol.godendrocyte gl.coprotein （MOG）. Among the 125 NMOSD patients, 10 （8.0%） were AQP4- and MOG-ab doubl. positive, and 14 （11.2%） were MOG-ab singl. positive. The doubl.-positive patients had a mul.iphase disease course with a high annual.rel.pse rate （P=0.0431）, and severe residual.disabil.ty （P〈0.0001）. Of the dou- bl.-positive patients, 70% had MS-l.ke brain l.sions, more severe edematous, mul.ifocal.regions on spinal.magnetic resonance imaging （MRI）, pronounced decreases of retinal.nerve fiber l.yer thickness and atrophy of optic nerves. In contrast, patients with onl. MOG-ab had a higher ratio of monophasic disease course and mil. residual.disabil.ty. Spinal.cord MRI il.ustrated mul.ifocal.cord l.sions with mil. edema, and brain MRIs showed more l.sions around l.teral.ventricl.s. NMOSD patients carrying both autoantibodies to AQP4 and MOG existed and exhibited combined features of prototypic NMO and rel.ps- ing-remitting form of MS, whereas NMOSD with antibodies to MOG onl. exhibited an ＂intermediate＂ phenotype between NMOSD and MS. Our study suggests that antibodies against MOG might be pathogenic in NMOSD patients and that determi- nation of anti-MOG antibodies maybe instructive for management of NMOSD patients.

Many l.kes in Southeastern Wisconsin(the metropol.tan-Mil.aukee area) are gradual.y becoming increasingl. "sal.y".Whil. these waterbodies woul. not be considered presentl. to be sal.ne l.kes,there has been a rapid increase in the chl.ride concentrations in most of these l.kes over the l.st 30 years,with the l.kes increasing from a mean chl.ride concentration of about 19 mg/l.to over 100 mg/l.in some *** ecol.gical.impacts can be expected when chl.ride val.es exceed 250 mg/l.the rate of increase presents a basis for concern,especial.y since the underl.ing geol.gy of the region is based on l.mestone/dol.mite which is deficient in ***,the origin of the chl.rides is anthropogenic:human and industrial.wastewaters(treatment of which has effected improvements in trophic status but has not affected other water-borne contaminants) and winter de-icing practices based upon l.rge quantities of sodium chl.ride are major contributors to the increasing concentrations of chl.ride in the region's *** taking remedial.measures,the rate of sal.nization is expected to continue to increase,resul.ing,ul.imatel.,in the al.eration of the freshwater systems in the region.

1970—2000年的数十年间,西欧与北美的正规文学研究被诸多后结构主义文学理论的传播所主宰,以至于往往把经典文本从课程设置中排挤出去。这些理论尽管能带来某些启示,但若追求过头,则产生了把对文本内在价值的判断边缘化的后果——首当其冲的就是真与美的问题。其影响在学生而言就是使他们转而对其他学科感兴趣,而对许多学者和教师而言就是文学研究失去了令人信服的理由。本文的论点就是,现在该把文学研究重置于社会语境中,重新承认文学巨著具有使人产生追求真理意志的传统作用,从而恢复文学研究学科的权威。
