Background:Sulfur mustard(SM)is a chemical warfare vesicant that severely injures exposed eyes,lungs,and *** hydrochloride(NM)is widely used as an SM *** study aimed to develop a depilatory double-disc(ddd)NM skin burn model for investigating vesicant pharmacotherapy ***:Hair removal method(clipping only versus clipping followed by a depilatory),the effect of acetone in the vesicant administration vehicle,NM dose(0.5-20μmol),vehicle volume(5-20μl),and time course(0.5-21 days)were investigated using male and female Cd-1 ***,an indicator of burn response,was assessed by biopsy skin *** ideal NM dose to induce partial-thickness burns was assessed by edema and histopathologic *** optimized ddd model was validated using an established reagent,NdH-4338,a cyclooxygenase,inducible nitric oxide synthase,and acetylcholinesterase inhibitor ***:Clipping/depilatory resulted in a 5-fold higher skin edematous response and was highly reproducible(18-fold lower%CV)compared to clipping *** did not affect edema *** edema occurred 24-48 h after NM administra-tion using optimized dosing methods and *** partial-thickness burns were achieved with 5μmol of NM and responded to treatment with *** dif-ferences in burn edematous responses were observed between males and ***:A highly reproducible and sensitive partial-thickness skin burn model was developed for assessing vesicant pharmacotherapy *** model pro-vides clinically relevant wound severity and eliminates the need for organic solvents that induce changes to the skin barrier function.

As a renewable energy source,geothermal energy has been widely used to provide space heating and cooling for *** thermal performance of ground heat exchanger(GHE)is significant for the operating efficiency of the ground source heat pump(GSHP)*** paper presents a comprehensive review of developments and advances of three kinds of GHE,including vertical borehole GHE(VBGHE),Pile GHE(PGHE),and deep borehole GHE(dBGHE)which are currently popular in larger GSHP ***,analytical models proposed to ana-lyze heat transfer process of VBGHE with different geological conditions are summarized,such as homogenous or heterogeneous ground,with or without groundwater *** and short-time step models and measures to improve GHE thermal performance are also ***,a summary of research advances in PGHE is provided,which includes the heat transfer models of PGHE,the effects of geometric structure,oper-ation modes,pile spacing,use of phase change material(PCM),thermal properties of PCM,thermo-mechanical behavior and/or thermal performance of *** effects of groundwater flow direction and velocity on PGHE are also summarized in ***,models of three kinds of dBGHEs,i.e.,deep coaxial GHE(dCGHE),deep U-bend GHE(dUGHE)and super-long gravity heat pipe(SLGHP),are *** physical bases of the dif-ferent analytical models are elaborated and also their advantages and disadvantages are *** in numerical modelling and improving numerical model calculation speed of dCBHE,dCBHE array,and dUBHE are *** review provides a meaningful reference for the further study of GHEs.

Supplementation of vitamin E or a botanical extract as antioxidants to improve growth performance and health of growing pigs housed under thermoneutral or heat-stressed conditions

Background Heat stress has severe negative consequences on performance and health of pigs,leading to significant economic *** objective of this study was to investigate the effects of supplemental vitamin E and a botanical extract in feed or drinking water on growth performance,intestinal health,and oxidative and immune status in grow-ing pigs housed under heat stress *** duplicate experiments were conducted,each using 64 crossbred pigs with an initial body weight of 50.7±3.8 and 43.9±3.6 kg and age of 13-week and 12-week,***(n=128)were housed individually and assigned within weight blocks and sex to a 2×4 factorial arrangement consisting of 2 environments(thermo-neutral(21.2℃)or heat-stressed(30.9℃))and 4 supplementation treatments(control diet;control+100 IU/L of d-α-tocopherol in water;control+200 IU/kg of dL-α-tocopheryl-acetate in feed;or control+400 mg/kg of a botanical extract in feed).Results Heat stress for 28 d reduced(P≤0.001)final body weight,average daily gain,and average daily feed intake(-7.4 kg,-26.7%,and-25.4%,respectively)but no effects of supplementation were detected(P>0.05).Serum vitamin E increased(Pd in feed(1.64 vs.3.59 and 1.64 vs.3.24),but not for the botanical extract(1.64 vs.1.67 mg/kg)and was greater when supplemented in water ***(P=0.002).Liver vitamin E increased(Pd feed(3.9 vs.18.0),but not with the botanical extract(3.9 vs.4.9 mg/kg).Serum malondialdehyde was reduced with heat stress on d 2,but increased on d 28(interaction,Pd was greater(Pdant supplementation compared to *** proliferation was reduced(P=0.037)in the jejunum under heat stress,but increased in the ileum when vitamin E was supplemented in feed and water under heat stress(interaction,P=0.04).Tumor necrosis factor-αin jejunum and ileum mucosa decreased by heat stress(Pd was re

Efficient detection of single optical centres in solids is essential for quantum information processing, sensing and single-photon generation *** this work,we use radio-frequency（RF） reflectometry to electrically detect the photoionisation induced by a single Er3+ion in *** high bandwidth and sensitivity of the RF reflectometry provide sub-100-ns time resolution for the photoionisation *** this technique,the optically excited state lifetime of a single Er3+ion in a Si nano-transistor is measured for the first time to be 0.49±0.04μ*** results demonstrate an efficient approach for detecting a charge state change induced by Er excitation and *** approach could be used for fast readout of other single optical centres in solids and is attractive for large-scale integrated optical quantum systems thanks to the multi-channel RF reflectometry demonstrated with frequency multiplexing techniques.

Torsional optomechanical cooling of a nanofiber

We demonstrate the optomechanical cooling of a tapered optical nanofiber by coupling the polarization of light to the mechanical angular momentum of the system. The coupling is enabled by birefringence in the fiber and does not make use of an optical resonator. We find evidence for cooling in the distribution of thermally driven amplitude fluctuations and the noise spectrum of the torsional modes. Our proof-of-principle demonstration shows cavity-less cooling of the torsional degree of freedom of a macroscopically extended nanofiber.
