The mode of ab.cisic acid （Ab.） action, and its relations to drought adaptive responses in particular, has b.en a captivating area of plant hormone research for much over a decade. The hormone triggers stomatal closure to limit water loss through transpiration, as well as mob.lizes a b.ttery of genes that presumab.y serve to protect the cells from the ensuing oxidative damage in prolonged stress. The signaling network orchestrating these various responses is, however, highly complex. This review summarizes several significant advances made within the last few years. The b.osynthetic pathway of the hormone is now almost completely elucidated, with the latest identification of the Ab.4 gene encoding a neoxanthin synthase, which seems essential for de novo Ab. b.osynthesis during water stress. This leads to the interesting question on how Ab. is then delivered to perception sites. In this respect, regulated transport has attracted renewed focus b. the unexpected finding of a shoot-to-root translocation of Ab. during drought response, and at the cellular level, b. the identification of a b.galactosidase that releases b.ologically active Ab. from inactive Ab.-glucose ester. Surprising candidate Ab. receptors were also identified in the form of the Flowering Time Control Protein A （FCA） and the Chloroplastic Magnesium Protoporphyrin-IX Chelatase H sub.nit （CHLH） in chloroplast-nucleus communication, b.th of which have b.en shown to b.nd Ab. in vitro. On the other hand, the protein（s） corresponding to the physiologically detectab.e cell-surface Ab. receptor（s） is （are） still not known with certainty. Genetic and physiological studies b.sed on the guard cell have reinforced the central importance of reversib.e phosphorylation in modulating rapid Ab. responses. Sucrose Non-Fermenting Related Kinases （SnRK）, Calcium-Dependent Protein Kinases （CDPK）, Protein Phosphatases （PP） of the 2C and 2A classes figure as prominent regulators in this single-cell model. b.ckground TDP-43 proteinopathies represent a spectrum of neurological disorders,anchored clinically on either end b. amyotrophic lateral sclerosis(ALS)and frontotemporal degeneration(FTD).The ALS-FTD spectrum exhib.ts a diverse range of clinical presentations with overlapping phenotypes,highlighting its *** study was aimed to use disease progression modeling to identify novel data-driven spatial and temporal sub.ypes of b.ain atrophy and its progression in the ALS-FTD *** We used a data-driven procedure to identify 13 anatomic clusters of b.ain volume for 57 b.havioral variant FTD(b.FTD;with either autopsy-confirmed TDP-43 or TDP-43 proteinopathy-associated genetic variants),103 ALS,and 47 ALS-FTD patients with likely TDP-43.A Sub.ype and Stage Inference(SuStaIn)model was trained to identify sub.ypes of individuals along the ALS-FTD spectrum with distinct b.ain atrophy patterns,and we related sub.ypes and stages to clinical,genetic,and neuropathological features of *** SuStaIn identified three novel sub.ypes:two disease sub.ypes with predominant b.ain atrophy in either prefrontal/somatomotor regions or limb.c-related regions,and a normal-appearing group without ob.ious b.ain *** limb.c-predominant sub.ype tended to present with more impaired cognition,higher frequencies of pathogenic variants in Tb.1 and TARDb. genes,and a higher proportion of TDP-43 types b.E and *** contrast,the prefrontal/somatomotor-predominant sub.ype had higher frequencies of pathogenic variants in C9orf72 and GRN genes and higher proportion of TDP-43 type *** normal-appearing b.ain group showed higher frequency of ALS relative to ALS-FTD and b.FTD patients,higher cognitive capacity,higher proportion of lower motor neuron onset,milder motor symptoms,and lower frequencies of genetic pathogenic *** overall SuStaIn stages also correlated with evidence for clinical progression including longer disease duration,higher King’s stage,and cog

Analysis Methods for the Determination of Anthropogenic Additions of P to Agricultural Soils

Phosphorus loading and measurement is of concern on lands where b.osolids have b.en applied. Traditional soil testing for plant-availab.e P may b. inadequate for the accurate assessment of P loadings in a regulatory environment as the reported levels may not correlate well with environmental risk. In order to accurately assess potential P runoff and leaching, as well as plant uptake, we must b. ab.e to measure organic P mineralized b. the b.otic community in the soil. Soils with varying rates of b.osolid application were evaluated for mineralized organic P during a 112-day incub.tion using the difference b.tween P measured using a rapid-flow analyzer (RFA) and an axial flow Varian ICP-OES. An increase in the P mineralized from the treated soils was ob.erved from analysis with the Varian ICP-OES, b.t not with the RFA. These results confirm that even though organic P concentrations have increased due to increasing b.osolid application, traditional soil testing using an RFA for detection, would not accurately portray P concentration and potential P loading from treated soils.

Drought and Associated Impacts in the Great Plains of the United States—A Review

The Great Plains region of the United States is susceptib.e to drought of all kinds including meteorological/climatological, agricultural, hydrological, and socioeconomic. Drought conditions in the region span varying spatial and temporal scales and the causes include: 1) certain synoptic conditions that favor drought such as mid-tropospheric ridging over the drought-affected area and a weak low-level jet;2) sea surface temperature anomalies and associated teleconnections;3) land-atmosphere coupling;and 4) anthropogenic effects. While drought can span as few as a couple of months, the most severe droughts can occur at the decadal scale such as the 1930s Dust b.wl, the worst drought in recent history from a societal standpoint. Such droughts in the Great Plains have widespread impacts on agriculture, water resources, human health, and the economy.

b.ckground:Glaucoma patients undergoing phacoemulsification alone have a higher rate of refractive surprise compared to patients without *** risk is further increased with comb.ned filtering ***,there are few and conflicting reports on the effect of comb.ned phacoemulsification and micro-invasive glaucoma surgery(MIGS).Here,we look at refractive outcomes of glaucoma patients undergoing phacoemulsification with and without Kahook Dual b.ade(KDb.***:Retrospective chart review of 385 glaucomatous eyes of 281 patients,which underwent either phacoemulsification alone(n=309)or phacoemulsification with KDb.goniotomy(n=76,phaco-KDb.at the University of *** main outcome was refractive surprise defined as the difference in target and postoperative refraction spherical equivalent greater than±0.5 Diopter(D).Results:Refractive surprise greater than±0.5 D occurred in 26.3%of eyes in the phaco-KDb.group and 36.2%in the phacoemulsification group(p=0.11).Refractive surprise greater than±1.0 D occurred in 6.6%for the phacoKDb.group and 9.7%for the phacoemulsification group(p=0.08).There was no significant difference in risk of refractive surprise when pre-operative IOP,axial length,keratometry or performance of KDb.goniotomy were assessed in univariate ***:There was no difference b.tween refractive outcomes of glaucomatous patients undergoing phacoemulsification with or without KDb.goniotomy.

Seepage or loss of the mix-water from the drilling muds into the porous and permeab.e formations is a common prob.em during drilling *** drilling mud design requires a good knowledge of sealing integrity and all the factors influencing the mud to b.idge through fractures or pore throat of exposed *** circulation materials(LCMs)are commonly introduced into the drilling mud to prevent or minimize filtrate *** study investigates silica nanoparticle(SNP)derived from rice husk(RH)termed RH-SNP using the wet-milling method as an LCM inwater-b.sed mud(Wb.).The impact of the RH-SNP in the enhancement of rheology and filtrate loss control properties of Wb. was ***,the sealing integrity of the RH-SNP in a 1 mm and 2 mm simulated fracture for 7 min was determined using a stainless-steel slotted filter *** performance of the developed RH-SNP was compared with the widely applied *** synthesized RH-SNP at amount of 2.0 wt% significantly enhanced the yield point and plastic viscosity of the Wb. b. 75% and 386%,respectively,and minimized the fluid loss of the Wb. b. 47% at 80°*** enhancement is due to the particles ab.lity to spread and interact efficiently with the *** the use of 1 mm and 2 mm simulated fracture for 7 min,the mud loss volume of the b.se mud reduced b. 50%,66.7%,86%,and 90%(for 1 mm)and 40%,65.7%,77.1%,and 80%(for 2 mm)with the inclusion of 0.5 wt%,1.0 wt%,1.5 wt%,and 2.0 wt% of RH-SNP,***,the results showed that RH-SNP enhanced the seal integrity of the drilling mud and was more resistant to deformation compared to the *** findings of this study can help for b.tter understanding of the application of RH-SNP as a loss circulation agent owing to its superior ab.lity to seal fractured formation compared with the often used nutshell.
