This study analyzes the stable isotopic ratio(δ18 O)and the synoptic characteristics of a precipitation event that occurred in the southernmost state of Brazil,Rio Grande do Sul,a region sensitive to explosive cyclogenesis in years with enhanced tropic-pole *** main objective was to evaluate the influence of tropical and Antarctic climate systems on the *** ring-down spectroscopy was used for the water isotopic analysis,and NCeP CFSv2 data were employed for the synoptic analysis of rainfall over a 48-h *** Amazonian isotopic signature on precipitated water was identified.A strong,low-level meridional flow from the Amazon Basin,combined with the development of a frontal system,resulted in intense cyclogenesis that generated an explosive cyclone.

Wood frog Lithobates sylvaticus tadpoles develop in temporary wetlands where high population densities can force tadpoles into aggregations that intensify competition and can lead to cannibalism. However, chemical alarm cues released from injured conspecifics could also dissuade cannibalism. The purpose of this study was to test mechanisms that may influence can- nibalistic behaviour. We tested whether the tendency of tadpoles to consume conspecifics would increase with the presence of competition and/or cues of profitable diets. Tadpoles placed in 1L experimental containers were tested for feeding initiation times of multiple diets, including conspecific tissues and conspecific tissues combined with chemical cues from the alternative diets （brine shrimp and comrneal）. Tadpoles were tested in the presence and absence of a competitor, and at multiple times over the course of the study. Tadpoles exhibited an altered response to diets over time; however the presence of a competitor reduced re- sponse times to all diets including conspecific tissues. Similarly, the presence of specific diets also reduced the response time of tadpoles to conspecific tissues. These results suggest competition among feeding tadpoles could result in aggressive behaviour leading to indiscriminate predation and cannibalism [Current Zoology 60 （5）： 571-580, 2014 ].

The measurement of aromaticity in biochars is generally conducted using solid state 13C nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy,which is expensive,time-consuming,and only accessible in a small number of researchintensive *** modelling could be a viable alternative to predict biochar aromaticity from other much easier accessible parameters(*** composition).In this research,Genetic Programming(GP),an advancedmachine learning method,is used to develop *** order to identify and evaluate the performance of prediction models,an experimental data set with 98 biochar samples collected from the literature was *** to the benefits of the intelligence iteration and learning of GP algorithm,a kind of underlying exponential relationship between the elemental compositions and the aromaticity of biochars is disclosed *** exponential relationship is clearer and simpler than the polynomial mapping relationships implicated by Maroto-Valer,Mazumdar,and Mazumdar-Wang *** this case,a novel exponential model is proposed for the prediction of biochar *** proposed exponential model appears better prediction accuracy and generalization ability than existing polynomial models during the statistical parameter evaluation.

An improved topographic database for King George Island,one of the most frequently visited regions in Antarctica,is presented.A first step consisted in combining data from differential GPS surveys gained during the austral summers 1997～1998 and 1999～2000,with the current coastline from a SPOT satellite image mosaic,topographic information from existing maps and from the Antarctic Digital *** this data sets,a digital terrain model (DTM) was generated using Arc/Info *** a second step,a satellite image map at the scale 1∶100 000 was assembled from contour lines derived from the DTM and the satellite mosaic.A lack of accurate topographic information in the eastern part of the island was *** topographic surveying or SAR interferometry should be used to improve the data quality in that *** GIS integrated database will be indispensable for glaciological and climatological studies and administrative and scientific *** future,the application of GIS techniques will be mandatory for environmental impact studies and environmental monitoring as well as for management plans on King George Island.

为了研究蓝藻水华期间释放的有机物给原水水质及给水处理过程带来的影响，选取优势藻种铜绿微囊藻的胞内物质（IOM）作为前驱体，分析了其结构特征．此外，分别研究了IOM在pH6．5、7．1及8．4条件下与氯及溴反应后性质的变化及消毒副产物的生成，并进行了相关性分析．结果表明，IOM中以相对分子质量较大的组分（〉30×10^3）为主，其溶解性有机碳（DOC）含量占总量的68．8％．三维荧光光谱（eeM）的结果表明IOM的成分主要以芳香蛋白类物质为主，其单位DOC的荧光强度为92．6AU·L·mg-1．与氯或溴反应后，芳香蛋白类eeM峰值下降了76．6％～93．3％，且其降低值与三卤甲烷（THMs，R2=0．81）和卤乙酸（HAAs，R2=0．77）的生成量正相关．ION与氯或溴反应生成的THMs和HAAs浓度均随着pH的增加而增加．溴相比氯与IOM反应可以生成更多的THMs和HAAs，且HAAs的卤代程度更高，但是氯及溴与IOM反应能力的差异随着pH的升高而逐渐减小，即kOBr·IOM／kOCl·IOM〈kHOBr·IOM／kHOCl·IOM.

Objective: To evaluate the acaricidal activity of the essential oil obtained from roots of Derris floribunda(D. floribunda)(Miq.) Benth, and its main constituent nerolidol against the Mexican mite Tetranychus mexicanus(T. mexicanus)(Mc Gregor).Methods: The essential oil from the roots of D. floribunda collected in the Amazon region(Brazil) was obtained by hydrodistillation. Its chemical composition was determined by GC–MS analysis. The acaricidal activities of this essential oil and nerolidol,were evaluated by recording the number of dead females(mortality) and eggs(fertility).Results: The essential oil showed sesquiterpenes as major volatile components. Nerolidol, the main component, represented 68.5% of the total composition of the essential oil. D. floribunda essential oil and nerolidol showed acaricidal activity, with LC_(50) of9.61 mg/m L air and 9.2 mg/m L air, respectively, over a 72 h period. In addition, both the essential oil and nerolidol significantly reduced the fecundity of T. ***: Due to the economic importance of T. mexicanus and the lack of new pesticides, our data are very promising in the search for efficient and safer acaricidal products. Furthermore, this is the first report about the chemical composition and bioactivity of the essential oil of the Amazon plant species D. floribunda.

A large part of the experimental program in Hall B of the jefferson Lab is dedicated to baryon spectroscopy. Photoproduction experiments are essential part of this program. CeBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer （CLAS） and availability of circularly and linearly polarized tagged photon beams provide unique conditions for this type of experiments. Recent addition of the Frozen Spin Target （FROST） gives a remarkable opportunity to measure double and triple polarization observables for different pseudo-scalar meson photopro- duction processes. For the first time, a complete or nearly complete experiment becomes possible and will allow model independent extraction of the reaction amplitude. An overview of the experiment and its current status is presented.

We discuss recent progress in extracting the excited meson spectrum and radiative transition form factors from lattice *** mention results in the charmonium sector,including the first lattice QCD calculation of radiative transition rates involving excited charmonium states,highlighting results for high spin and exotic *** present recent results on a highly excited isovector meson spectrum from dynamical anisotropic *** carefully constructed operators we show how the continuum spin of extracted states can be reliably identified and confidently extract excited states,states with exotic quantum numbers and states of high *** spectrum includes the first spin-four state extracted from lattice *** conclude with some comments on future prospects.

This work describes a simple yet powerful scalable solution chemistry strategy to create back‐contact rich interfaces between substrates such as commercial transparent conducting fluorine‐doped tin oxide coated glass(FTO)and photoactive thin films such as hematite for low‐cost water oxidation ***‐resolution electron microscopy(SeM,TeM,STeM),atomic force microscopy(AFM),elemental chemical mapping(eeLS,eDS)and photoelectrochemical(PeC)investigations reveal that the mechanical stress,lattice mismatch,electron energy barrier,and voids between FTO and hematite at the back‐contact interface as well as short‐circuit and detrimental reaction between FTO and the electrolyte can be alleviated by engineering the chemical composition of the precursor solutions,thus increasing the overall efficiency of these low‐cost photoanodes for water oxidation reaction for a clean and sustainable generation of hydrogen from PeC water‐*** findings are of significant importance to improve the charge collection efficiency by minimizing electron‐hole recombination observed at back‐contact interfaces and grain boundaries in mesoporous electrodes,thus improving the overall efficiency and scalability of low‐cost PeC water splitting devices.

Sepsis is among the most common reason for admission to intensive care units throughout the world. In the US and most Western nations sepsis is largely a disease of the elderly. Management of elderly patients with severe sepsis is challenging. early recognition of this syndrome, together with the early administration of appropriate antibiotics and cautious fluid resuscitation is the cornerstone of therapy. echocardiography together with non-invasive or invasive hemodynamic monitoring is recommended in patients who have responded poorly to fluids or have significant underlying cardiac disease. This paper reviews the hemodynamic changes that characterize sepsis, particularly as they apply to elderly patients and provides recommendations for the management of these patients.
