Clinical Evaluation of TruFUSE^(█) Lumbar Facet Fusion System

Introduction: The TruFUSE lumbar facet fusion system is a unique allograft milled bone dowel used to fuse facet joints. we evaluated subjects undergoing TruFUSE fusion for stable grade I spondylolisthesis and stenosis comparing operative time, length of stay, blood loss and outcome to a similar literature-based cohort of patients undergoing pedicle screw fusion (PSF). Methods: From 2009 to 2011, 41 subjects (17 M,24 F, aver. age 69.5 yr) underwent TruFUSE facet fusion along with transverse process bone fusion and laminectomy. Length of stay, operative time, blood loss and outcomes were compared to eight literature-based cohort that analyzed similar parameters following pedicle screw fusion. Results: The 41 subjects’ mean operative time for laminectomy, transverse process fusion and TruFUSE facet fusion was 106 min, with a mean blood loss of145 cm3, and a mean hospital stay of 1.7 days (77% one day). A follow-up at average six months, 33 (80%) subjects reported subjective outcomes of “excellent” or “somewhat improved”, four (10%) “unchanged” and four (10%) “worse”. Flexion and extension radiographs showed 39 of the 41 patients (95%) had spinal stability at an average six months post-op and all (100%) had signs of early fusion. Discussion: TruFUSE subjects had significantly (p - 19 days range). Mean estimated blood loss (EBL) was significantly lower (p 3 compared to321 cm3 and1082 cm3 range for PSF). Subjective outcome and radiographic stability were comparable between groups. Conclusion: This comparison using the TruFUSE lumbar facet fusion system demonstrates improvements in length of stay, surgical blood loss, and operative time in our selected patient population compared to several published lumbar pedicle screw fusion systems outcomes. There may be potential economic benefits as a result of these improvements.

Assembly of zinc metallacrowns with an a-amino hydroxamic acid ligand

In the assembly of metallacrowns for molecular recognition, luminescence, and molecular magnetism applications, substituting the ring ion can have profound effects on the structure, stability, and physical properties of the inorganic macrocycle. The assembly of Zn（ll） metallacrowns with an ,^-amino hydroxamic acid ligand （pheHA） was investigated studied metallacrowns containing Cu（lI） and Ni（I1）. to compare the assembly behavior with the well Electrospray ionization mass spectrometry reveals that the benchmark species Zns（pheHA）42＋ and LnZns（pheHA）s3. assemble in pyridine, which is consistent with the behavior of Cu（II） and Ni（ll）. A LnZn4（pheHA）43. species is also observed in a 1：1 DMF-pyridine mixture. An unprecedented La（III）[16-MCznul）.pn^HA,HpheHA-6]s＋ complex was crystallo- graphically characterized that possesses unusual C2 symmetry. These results provide insights into the design of functional metallacrowns through ring ion substitution.

The Open Quantum Materials Database (OQMD): assessing the accuracy of DFT formation energies

The Open Quantum Materials Database(OQMD)is a high-throughput database currently consisting of nearly 300,000 density functional theory(DFT)total energy calculations of compounds from the Inorganic Crystal Structure Database(ICSD)and decorations of commonly occurring crystal *** maximise the impact of these data,the entire database is being made available,without restrictions,at ***/*** this paper,we outline the structure and contents of the database,and then use it to evaluate the accuracy of the calculations therein by comparing DFT predictions with experimental measurements for the stability of all elemental ground-state structures and 1,670 experimental formation energies of *** represents the largest comparison between DFT and experimental formation energies to *** apparent mean absolute error between experimental measurements and our calculations is 0.096 eV/*** order to estimate how much error to attribute to the DFT calculations,we also examine deviation between different experimental measurements themselves where multiple sources are available,and find a surprisingly large mean absolute error of 0.082 eV/***,we suggest that a significant fraction of the error between DFT and experimental formation energies may be attributed to experimental ***,we evaluate the stability of compounds in the OQMD(including compounds obtained from the ICSD as well as hypothetical structures),which allows us to predict the existence of~3,200 new compounds that have not been experimentally characterised and uncover trends in material discovery,based on historical data available within the ICSD.

Laser-Assisted Generation and Detection of Non-Nuclear Low-Energy Neutrino-Antineutrino Beams

It is argued that conservation of energy, momentum, and spin, and QM transition probabilities, allow the generation and detection of low-energy (eV) neutrinos and antineutrinos in intra-atomic (non-nuclear) laser transitions. Two-quantum transitions between an upper and lower excited state in a lasing medium can support paired emissions of a neutrino and a recoiling counter-propagating anti-neutrino, each carrying half of the lasing transition energy. Their propagations are in opposite directions along the same axis as that of the intracavity laser beam in the lasing medium. Estimates show that the probability of this two-quantum event is on the order of 10−7 compared to a one-quantum stimulated emission of a laser photon. Absorptions or emissions of single antineutrinos or neutrinos by molecular/atomic matter are impossible because they carry spins s = ±h/2 which violates Δs = ±nh (n = integer) required for such processes. However, inside a laser, emissions of photons from excited states can be stimulated by neutrinos or anti-neutrinos passing through, provided their undulation frequency is resonant with the transition frequency. This is because in stimulated emissions, neutrinos or antineutrinos are not absorbed, and spin conservation violation is not an issue. Thus, detection of the passage of a laser-generated antineutrino or neutrino beam through a second “receiver” laser is possible provided that the transition energy in the second laser equals half the transition energy of the laser that emits the antineutrino-neutrino beam to be detected.

Urease activity and nitrogen dynamics in highly weathered soils with designer biochars under corn cultivation

The application of designer biochar has the potential to impact soil enzyme activity and soil nitrogen ***,very little is known about the mechanisms responsible for biochar-enzyme-nitrogen interaction in highly weathered *** objective of our 3-year(2016-2018)field experiment was to evaluate the effectiveness of designer biochars(DB)in enhancing urease activity(UA),total nitrogen(TN),total inorganic nitrogen(TIN),and nitrogen uptake(NU)at different growth stages(GS)of corn in a highly weathered soil of southeastern Coastal Plain region,*** treatments have consisted of the control,100%pine chips(100PC),100%poultry litter(100PL),2:1 blend of PC and PL(PCPL),100%raw switchgrass(Panicum vaginatum,L;100RSG),and 2:1 blend of PC and RSG(PCRSG).All the designer biochar treatments were applied at the rate of 30,000 kg ha^(−1)to a Goldsboro loamy sand in *** activity,TN,TIN,and NU varied remarkably with DB(p≤0.0001)at different GS(p≤0.0001)of *** treated with 100PL had the greatest UA(28.18μg N g^(−1)h^(−1)),TN(0.087%),and TIN(14.53 mg kg^(−1))while the least UA,TN,and TIN of 20.55μg N g^(−1)h^(−1),0.063%,and 5.42 mg kg^(−1),respectively,were observed from the *** three-year TN average increase over the control was in the order:100PL(36.8%)>100RSG(25.8%)>PCRSG(25.3%)>PCPL(23.9%)>100PC(7.1%).The greatest NU of corn of 140.4 kg N ha^(−1)was from soils treated with 100PL while the least amount of NU was from ***,our results showed promising significance for the treatment of highly weathered soils since the application of DB did enhance UA and improve TN and TIN in the soils.

Development of a field enhanced photocatalytic device for biocide of coliform bacteria

A field enhanced flow reactor using bias assisted photocatalysis was developed for bacterial disinfection in lab-synthesized and natural waters. The reactor provided complete inactivation of contaminated waters with flow rates of 50 mL/min. The device consisted of titanium dioxide nanotube arrays, with an externally applied bias of up to 6 V. Light intensity, applied voltage, background electrolytes and bacteria concentration were all found to impact the device performance. Complete inactivation of Escherichia coli w3110（- 8 × 10^3CFU/mL） occurred in 15 sec in the reactor irradiated at 25 mw/cm^2 with an applied voltage of 4 V in a 100 ppm NaCl solution. Real world testing was conducted using source water from Emigration Creek in Salt Lake City, Utah. Disinfection of natural creek water proved more challenging, providing complete bacterial inactivation after 25 sec at 6 V. A reduction in bactericidal efficacy was attributed to the presence of inorganic and organic species, as well as the increase in robustness of natural bacteria.

Background and Aims:High-intensity interval training(HIIT)is a therapeutic option for people with nonalcoholic steatohepatitis(NASH).However,the perspectives and experiences of HIIT for people with NASH are unknown,limiting translation of *** explored the experiences and perspectives of both professionally supervised and self-directed HIIT in people with NASH and evaluated participant-reported knowledge,barriers,and enablers to commencing and sustaining ***:Twelve participants with NASH underwent 12 weeks of supervised HIIT(3 days/week,4×4 minutes at 85–95%maximal heart rate,interspersed with 3 minutes active recovery),followed by 12-weeks of selfdirected(unsupervised)***-on-one,semistructured participant interviews were conducted by exercise staff prior to HIIT and following both supervised and self-directed HIIT to explore prior knowledge,barriers,enablers,and outcomes at each *** were audio-recorded,transcribed,coded,and thematically analyzed by two independent ***:Four dominant themes were identified:(1)no awareness of/experience with HIIT and ambivalence about exercise capabilities;(2)multiple medical and social barriers to commencing and continuing HIIT;(3)exercise specialist support was a highly valued enabler,and(4)HIIT was enjoyed and provided holistic ***:People with NASH may lack knowledge of and confidence for HIIT,and experience multiple complex barriers to commencing and continuing *** specialist support is a key enabler to sustained *** factors need to be addressed in future clinical programs to augment the uptake and long-term sustainability of HIIT by people with NASH so they can experience the range of related benefits.
