BACKGROUND Bone marrow(BM)suppression is one of the most common side effects of radiotherapy and the primary cause of death following exposure to *** concerted efforts,there is no definitive treatment method *** studies have reported using mesenchymal stromal cells(MSCs),but their therapeutic effects are *** We administered and examined the effects of various amounts of adipose-derived MSCs(ADSCs)in mice with radiation-induced BM *** Mice were divided into three groups:Normal control group,irradiated(RT)group,and stem cell-treated group following whole-body irradiation(WBI).Mouse ADSCs(mADSCs)were transplanted into the peritoneal cavity either once or three times at 5×10^(5) cells/200μ*** white blood cell count and the levels of,plasma cytokines,BM mRNA,and BM surface markers were compared between the three *** BM-derived CD34+hematopoietic progenitor cells were co-cultured with human ADSCs(hADSCs)or incubated in the presence of hADSCs conditioned media to investigate the effect on human cells in *** The survival rate of mice that received one transplant of mADSCs was higher than that of mice that received three *** transplantations of ADSCs delayed the repopulation of BM hematopoietic stem ***-inflammatory effects and M2 polarization by intraperitoneal ADSCs might suppress erythropoiesis and induce myelopoiesis in sub-lethally RT *** The results suggested that an optimal amount of MSCs could improve survival rates post-WBI.

With the establishment of the immune surveillance mechanism since the 1950s,attempts have been made to activate the immune system for cancer treatment through the discovery of various cytokines or the development of antibodies up to *** fruits of these efforts have contributed to the recognition of the 3rd generation of anticancer immunotherapy as the mainstream of cancer ***,the limitations of cancer immunotherapy are also being recognized through the conceptual establishment of cold tumors recently,and colorectal cancer(CRC)has become a major issue from this therapeutic point of ***,it is emphasized that non-clinical strategies to overcome the immunosuppressive environment and clinical trials based on these basic investigations are being made on the journey to achieve better treatment outcomes for the treatment of cold CRC.

Reliable high temperature, high humidity flexible thin film encapsulation using Al2O3/MgO nanolaminates for flexible OLEDs

Since most organic materials are very sensitive to moisture and oxygen, organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs) require an encapsulation layer to protect the active layer from these gases. Since light, flexible and portable OLEDs are being employed in more diverse climates and environmental conditions, the OLED encapsulation layer must retain robust mechanical properties and stability in high temperature/high humidity conditions. Al2O3 films have demonstrated excellent barrier performance, but they readily hydrolyze when exposed to prolonged harsh environments. In this study, we fabricated a thin film encapsulation (TFE) film that was resistant to hydrolysis, using Al2O3/MgO (AM) nanolaminates. MgO has superior resistance to harsh environments, and the aluminate phase generated by the chemical reaction of Al2O3 and MgO provided excellent barrier performance, even after storage in harsh conditions. A multi-barrier fabricated using the AM nanolaminate showed excellent barrier performance, close to the level required by OLEDs. It did not significantly deteriorate even after a bending test of 1,000 iterations at 0.63% strain. After 1,000 cycle of bending, the electrical properties of the passivated OLEDs were not significantly degraded at shelf-lifetime test where the fabricated device was stored for 50 days in a harsh environment of 60℃, 90% relative humidity. The multi-barrier shows the best performance compared to previous studies on flexible encapsulation that can be used in harsh environments.

What is the appropriate strategy for diagnosing NAFLD using ultrasonography in obese children?

Background:The aim of this study is to identify obese children who are candidates for a potential diagnosis of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD).Methods:We enrolled 242 obese children (122 boys and 120 girls) aged 7-16 years who were examined with abdominal ultrasonography in our pediatric obesity *** compared patients in the normal group with those in the NAFLD group (mild disease,moderate to severe disease) and identified the optimal anthropometric parameters among height,weight,body mass index (BMI),waist circumference,hip circumference,waist to height ratio (WHtR),and waist to hip ratio to predict NAFLD using a receiver operating characteristic curve *** also investigated risk factors associated with NAFLD for the anthropometric parameters and the biochemical model using logistic ***:The high-and low-risk groups for hepatic steatosis relative to a WHtR of 0.56 as the standard point showed significant differences in hepatic steatosis severity grade (P0.56 (2.25,1.05-4.81),and waist circumference >90th percentile (20.22,9.21-44.36) in the anthropometric parameter model and elevated alanine aminotransferase levels (boys >25.8 U/L,girls >22.1 U/L) (6.93,2.52-19.03),hypertriglyceridemia (>110 mg/dL) (3.80,1.23-11.75),and triglyceride to HDL cholesterol ratio >3 (9.23,2.95-8.83) in the biochemical parameter ***:A diagnostic approach to hepatic steatosis is recommended as part of the proper screening and stratification of risk factors in obese *** is a simple and convenient method of effectively identifying obese children who are candidates for hep

Poly adenosine diphosphate-ribosylation, a promising target for colorectal cancer treatment

The development of colorectal cancer(CRC)can result from changes in a variety of cellular systems within the tumor ***,it is primarily associated with genomic instability that is the gradual accumulation of genetic and epigenetic changes consisting of a characteristic set of mutations crucial for pathways in CRC *** on this background,the potential to focus on poly[adenosine diphosphate(ADP)-ribose]polymerase(PARP)-1 and poly-ADP ribosylation(PARylation)as the main causes of malignant formation of CRC may be *** of the important functions of PARP-1 and PARylation is its deoxyribonucleic acid(DNA)repair function,which plays a pivotal role in the DNA damage response and prevention of DNA damage maintaining the redox homeostasis involved in the regulation of oxidation and ***-1 and PARylation can also alter epigenetic markers and chromatin structure involved in transcriptional regulation for the oncogenes or tumor suppressor genes by remodeling histone and chromatin *** the high importance of these processes in CRC,it can be considered that PARP-1 and PARylation are at the forefront of the pathological changes required for CRC ***,this review addresses the current molecular biological features for understanding the multifactorial function of PARP-1 and PARylation in CRC related to the aforementioned roles;furthermore,it presents a summary of recent approaches with PARP-1 inhibition in non-clinical and clinical studies targeting *** understanding could help embrace the importance of targeting PARP-1 and PARylation in the treatment of CRC,which may present the potential to identify various research topics that can be challenged both nonclinically and clinically.

The use of chemotherapeutic regimens for the treatment of pancreatic cancer is still limited because pancreatic cancer is usually diagnosed at an advanced stage as a refractory disease in which symptoms are difficult to recognize in the early ***,at advanced stages,there are important challenges to achieve clinical benefit and symptom resolution,even with the use of an expanded spectrum of anticancer ***,a point of reduced susceptibility to conventional chemotherapies by breast cancer susceptibility gene(BRCA)mutations led to a new perspective for overcoming the resistance of pancreatic cancer within the framework of increased genome ***(ADP-Ribose)polymerase(PARP)-1 is an enzyme that can regulate intrinsic functions,such as response to DNA ***,in an environment where germline mutations in BRCAs(BRCAness)inhibit homologous recombination in DNA damage,resulting in a lack of DNA damage response,a key role of PARP-1 for the adaptation of the genome instability could be further ***,we summarized the key functional role of PARP-1 in genomic instability of pancreatic cancer with the BRCAness phenotype and listed clinical applications and outcomes of PARP-1 inhibitors to highlight the importance of targeting PARP-1 activity.

Cancer-specific metabolism:Promising approaches for colorectal cancer treatment

Investigation of cancer-specific metabolism has made it possible to establish the principle that atypically reconstituted metabolism is considered a hallmark of cancer due to changes in physiological ***,a variety of targets depending on the prompted aerobic glycolysis process,starting from the abnormal uptake of glucose,and cancer-specific metabolism due to impaired mitochondrial function and abnormal expression of drug-metabolizing enzymes have been investigated and *** that most solid cancers rely on cancer-specific metabolism to support their growth,it is necessary to examine closely the specific processes of cancer metabolism and have a detailed understanding of how cellular metabolism is altered in colorectal cancer(CRC)related to CRC survival and *** development of key methods to regulate efficiently cancer-specific metabolism in CRC is still in the initial ***,targeting cancer-specific metabolism will yield treatable methods that are critical as a new area of development strategies for CRC treatment.

Inhibiting focal adhesion kinase:A potential target for enhancing therapeutic efficacy in colorectal cancer therapy

Focal adhesion kinase(FAK) is a major integrin- dep-endent tyrosine phosphorylated protein, recently, FAK association with colorectal cancer(CRC) has gained at-tention. The various cancer-promoting mechanisms that associated with FAK can be implicated in the progression of CRC. The interactions between structural features of FAK and various kinases could be closely related to growth, survival, and metastasis in CRC cells. These interactions include human epithelial growth factor re-ceptor, c-Met, platelet-derived growth factor receptor, vascular endothelial growth factor receptor, and Src. Such interactions can trigger the survival signaling of CRC cells and are also involved signaling downstream of phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase, AKT, and the extracellular regulated kinase. Based on this scientific background, many pharmaceutical companies are taking efforts to develop FAK inhibitors to treat solid cancer including CRC. Although the anti-cancer efficacies have been noted in many studies, the commercial drugs have not been deve-loped yet. Therefore, the FAK research on CRC is expec-ted to gain momentum and be highly appreciated as a potential field for developing the new drugs. Therefore, the studies on FAK that effect on the progression of human CRC s would be possible to suggest various app-roaches to CRC treatment, and FAK could be a potential target as an anticancer candidate for CRC therapies.

Diurnal Variations of Summer Precipitation in the Beijing Area and the Possible Effect of Topography and Urbanization

The present study examined the diurnal variations of summer precipitation in the Beijing area by usingsubdaily precipitation and wind observations. A combined effect of topography and urbanization on thecharacteristics of diurnal variations was suggested. It was shown that stations located in the plain areaexhibited typical night rain peaks, whereas those in the mountainous area exhibited clear afternoon peaks ofprecipitation diurnal variations. The precipitation peaks were associated with wind fields around the Beijingarea, which were found to be highly modulated by mountain-valley circulation and urban-country *** lower-tropospheric wind exhibited a clear diurnal shift in its direction from north at 0800 LST to southat 2000 LST, which reflected mountain-valley circulation. The transitions from valley to mountain windand the opposite generally happened after sunset and sunrise, respectively, and both occurred earlier for thestations located closer to mountains. By comparing the diurnal variations of precipitation at stations in anortheast suburb, an urban area, and a southwest suburb, it was revealed that the northeast suburb grouphad the highest normalized rainfall frequency, but the southwest group had the lowest from late afternoon tolate evening. On the contrary, in the early morning from about 0200 to 1000 LST, the southwest group andurban group had the highest normalized rainfall frequency. This pattern might originate from the combinedeffects of mountain-valley topography and urbanization.
