Indigenous,underutilized fruits-byproducts are potential sources of novel antioxidants for the food *** current study evaluated the effects of different levels of purified ethanolic extracts of Harpephyllum caffrum Bernh peel(HCP,0,250,450 and 650 ppm)on shelf life and sensory attributes of fresh ground beef patties stored at 4℃during 9 days in comparison with sodium metabisulfite(SMB,450 ppm).Antioxidant type×day interactions influenced(P≤0.05)shelf life parameters,including loss of colour,myoglobin and protein *** HCP extracts improved colour and protein(i.e.,reduced thiol loss)stability during storage compared to the *** HCP treatments had lower(P≤0.05)TBARS on day 9 compared to the ***,HCP reduced(P≤0.05)tenderness and juiciness,and increased undesirable flavours in beef patties compared to control and *** study indicates that HCP is a potential alternative to SMB in improving oxidative shelf life of the beef patties,with additional studies recommended to reduce adverse effects on sensory quality.

Prostate cancer is one of the most common cancers in men. Traditional screening and diagnostic methods include digital rectal examinations （DREs）, biopsies and serum prostate-specific antigen （PSA） tests, with the latter being the more popular. PSA is a biomarker for prostate cancer; however, it is highly sensitive to external factors as well as other prostate diseases. As such, the reliability of of the serum PSA level as a sole screening and diagnostic tool for prostate cancer is controversial. Recently, it has been shown that fasting extremes can affect concentrations of serum chemistry analytes, thus raising the question of whether or not fasting has an effect on the highly sensitive PSA biomarker. Patients testing for serum PSA levels are often concomitantly submitting to other tests that require fasting, subjecting certain patients to a fasting PSA level while others not. The objective of this study was to investigate whether this discrepancy in fasting state translates into an effect on serum PSA levels. Serum PSA levels and fasting time records for 157 276 men who underwent testing at Calgary Laboratory Services （CLS; Calgary, Alberta, Canada） between 01 January 2010 and 31 March 2013 were accessed. Linear regression models of mean PSA levels and fasting times revealed a statistically important relationship at certain fasting times. Applying a dynamic mathematical model to explore the clinical effect of fasting suggests minimal impact on serum PSA result interpretation. Thus, patients can be tested for serum PSA levels regardless of their fasting state.

Cachexia is frequently described in patients with pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) and is associated with reduced survival and quality of life. Unfortunately, the therapeutic options of this multi-factorial and complex syndrome are limited. This is due to the fact that, despite extensive preclinical and clinical research, the underlying pathological mechanisms leading to PDAC-associated cachexia are still not fully understood. Furthermore, there is still a lack of consensus on the definition of cachexia, which complicates the standardization of diagnosis and treatment as well as the analysis of the current literature. In order to provide an efficient therapy for cachexia, an early and reliable diagnosis and consistent monitoring is required, which can be challenging especially in obese patients. Although many substances have been tested in clinical and preclinical settings, so far none of them have been proven to have a long-term effect in ameliorating cancer-associated cachexia. However, recent studies have demonstrated that multidimensional therapeutic modalities are able to alleviate pancreatic cancer-associated cachexia and ultimately improve patients’ outcome. In this current review, we propose a stepwise and pragmatic approach to facilitate and standardize the treatment of cachexia in pancreatic cancer patients. This strategy consists of nutritional, dietary, pharmacological, physical and psychological methods.

This paper presents a new cell culture platform enabling label-free surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy(SERS)analysis of biological *** platform integrates a multilayered metal-insulator-metal nanolaminated SERS substrate and polydimethylsiloxane(PDMS)multiwells for the simultaneous analysis of cultured *** cell lines,including breast normal and cancer cells and prostate cancer cells,were used to validate the applicability of this unique *** cell lines were cultured in different *** Raman spectra of over 100 cells from each cell line were collected and analyzed after 12h of introducing the cells to the *** unique Raman spectra of each cell line yielded biomarkers for identifying cancerous and normal cells.A kernel-based machine learning algorithm was used to extract the high-dimensional variables from the Raman ***,the nonnegative garrote on a kernel machine classifier is a hybrid approach with a mixed nonparametric model that considers the nonlinear relationships between the higher-dimension *** breast cancer cell lines and normal breast epithelial cells were distinguished with an accuracy close to 90%.The prediction rate between breast cancer cells and prostate cancer cells reached 94%.Four blind test groups were used to evaluate the prediction power of the SERS *** peak intensities at the selected Raman shifts of the testing groups were selected and compared with the training groups used in the machine learning *** blind testing groups were correctly predicted 100% of the time,demonstrating the applicability of the multiwell SERS array for analyzing cell populations for cancer research.

Deciduous oaks(Quercus spp.)are distributed from subalpine to tropical regions in the northern hemi-sphere and have important roles as carbon sinks and in climate change *** variations in plant functional traits at multiple biological levels and linking them to environmental variables across geographical ranges is important for forecasting range-shifts of broadly-distrib-uted species under climate *** sampled leaves of five deciduous Quercus *** approximately 20°of latitude(~21°N-41°N)and 20 longitude(~99°E-119°E)across China and measured 12 plant functional traits at different biological *** traits varied distinctively,either within each biological level or among different levels driven by climatic and edaphic *** at the organ level were significantly correlated with those at the cellular and tissue levels,while traits at the whole-plant level only correlated with those at the tissue *** Quercus species responded to changing environments by regulating stomatal size,leaf thickness and the palisade mesophyll thickness to leaf thickness ratios with contrasting degree of effect to adjust the whole-plant functioning,i.e.,intrinsic water use efficiency(iWUE),carbon supply and nitrogen *** results suggest that these deciduous Quercus *** maintain vigour by increasing iWUE when subjected to large temperature changes and insufficient moisture,and by accu-mulating leaf non-structural carbohydrates under drought *** findings provide new insights into the inher-ent variation and trait coordination of widely distributed tree species in the context of climate change.

BACKGROUND Endoscopic treatment of pancreatic necrosis can be challenging and timeconsuming because sticky necrotic debris is sometimes difficult to remove. The over-the-scope-grasper, a new tool that has recently become available for this purpose, might also be useful for other indications. However, clinical data on the efficacy and safety of this new device are *** To evaluate the technical success and safety of the device in a multicenter *** The over-the-scope-grasper was used in nine selected endoscopic centers between November 2020and October 2021 for appropriate indications. Overall, 56 procedures were included in the *** retrospectively evaluated procedural parameters of all endoscopic interventions using a predefined questionnaire, with special respect to technical success, indications, duration of intervention, type of sedation, and complications. In the case of pancreatic necrosectomy, the access route, stent type, number of necrosis pieces removed, and clinical handling were also *** A total of 56 procedures were performed, with an overall technical success rate of 98%. Most of the procedures were endoscopic pancreatic necrosectomies(33 transgastric, 4 transduodenal). In 70%of the procedures, access to the necrotic cavity was established with a lumen apposing metal *** technical success of pancreatic necrosectomy was 97%, with a mean of 8 pieces(range, 2-25pieces) of necrosis removed in a mean procedure time of 59 min(range, 15-120 min). In addition,the device has been used to remove blood clots(n = 6), to clear insufficiency cavities before endoluminal vacuum therapy(n = 5), and to remove foreign bodies from the upper gastrointestinal tract(n = 8). Survival of living organisms is fully dependent on their maintenance of genome integrity,being permanently threatened by replication stress in proliferating *** the plant DNA damage response(DDR)regulator SOG1 has been demonstrated to cope with replication defects,accumulating evidence points to other pathways functioning independent of ***,we report the roles of the Arabidopsis E2FA and EF2B transcription factors,two well-characterized regulators of DNA replication,in plant response to replication *** a combination of reverse genetics and chromatin immunoprecipitation approaches,we show that E2FA and E2FB share many target genes with SOG1,providing evidence for their involvement in the *** of double-and triple-mutant combinations revealed that E2FB,rather than E2FA,plays the most prominent role in sustaining plant growth in the presence of replication defects,either operating antagonistically or synergistically with ***,SOG1 aids in overcoming the replication defects of E2FA/E2FB-deficient ***,our data reveal a complex transcriptional network controlling the replication stress response in which E2Fs and SOG1 act as key regulatory factors.

Daytime HONO photolysis is an important source of atmospheric hydroxyl radicals(OH).Knowledge of HONO formation chemistry under typical haze conditions,however,is still *** the Multiphase chemistry experiment in Fogs and Aerosols in the North China Plain in 2018,we investigated the wintertime HONO formation and its atmospheric implications at a rural site *** different episodes based on atmospheric aerosol loading levels were classified:clean periods(CPs),moderately polluted periods(MPPs)and severely polluted periods(SPPs).Correlation analysis revealed that HONO formation via *** conversion of NO_(2)was more efficient on aerosol surfaces than on ground,highlighting the important role of aerosols in promoting HONO *** HONO budget analysis indicated a large missing source(with an average production rate of 0.66±0.26,0.97±0.47 and 1.45±0.55 ppbV/hr for CPs,MPPs and SPPs,respectively),which strongly correlated with photo-enhanced reactions(NO_(2)heterogeneous reaction and particulate nitrate photolysis).Average OH formation derived from HONO photolysis reached up to(0.92±0.71),(1.75±1.26)and(1.82±1.47)ppbV/hr in CPs,MPPs and SPPs respectively,much higher than that from O3 photolysis(i.e.,(0.004±0.004),(0.006±0.007)and(0.0035±0.0034)ppbV/hr).Such high OH production rates could markedly regulate the atmospheric oxidation capacity and hence promote the formation of secondary aerosols and pollutants.
