Chemokine system polymorphisms, survival and hepatocellular carcinoma occurrence in patients with hepatitis C virus-related cirrhosis

AIM： To explore the influence of polymorphisms in genes encoding for the chemokines Stromal cell-Derived Factor-1 （SDF-1）/CXCL12 and Monocyte Chemotactic Protein-1 （MCP-1）/CCL2, or for the chemokine receptor CCR5 on the risks of liver-related death and hepatocellular carcinoma （HCC） occurrence in hepatitis C virus （HCV）-infected patients. METHODS： SDF-1 3＇A, MCP-1 （-2518） and CCRS-△32 polymorphisms, SDF-1α, Regulated upon Activation Normal T cells Expressed and Secreted （RANTES）/CCL5 and MCP-1 serum levels were determined in 120 HCV- infected patients, included at time of cirrhosis diagnosis and prospectively followed-up. RESULTS： During follow-up, 23/120 （19.1%） patients died and 47/120 （39.1%） developed HCC. Carriers and noncarriers of each genetic marker had similar baseline characteristics estimating the severity of liver disease. The occurrence of death or HCC during follow-up was similar among carriers and noncarriers of each polymorphism. There was no association between the carriage of mutated alleles and chemokine serum levels and the latter were not associated with the risks of death or HCC. CONCLUSION： This study suggests the lack of association of SDF-1 3＇A, MCP-1 （-2518）, CCRS-△32 polymorphisms with death and HCC occurrence in cirrhotic HCV-infected patients.

Aqueous rechargeable zinc batteries are getting increasing attention for large-scale energy storage owing to their advantages in terms of cost,environmental friendliness and ***,the layered puckeredγ’-V_(2)O_(5) polymorph with a porous morphology is firstly introduced as cathode for an aqueous zinc battery system in a binary Zn^(2+)/Li^(+)*** Zn‖γ’-V_(2)O_(5) cell delivers high capacities of 240 and190 mAh g^(-1) at current densities of 29 and 147 mA g^(-1),respectively,and remarkable cycling stability in the 1.6 V-0.7 V voltage window(97%retention after 100 cycles at 0.15 A g^(-1)).The detailed structural evolution during first discharge-charge and subsequent cycling is investigated using X-ray diffraction and Raman *** demonstrate a reaction mechanism based on a selective Li insertion in the1.6 V-1.0 V voltage *** involves a reversible exchange of 0.8 Li^(+)in γ’-V_(2)O_(5) and the same structural response as the one reported in lithiated organic ***,in the extended 1.6 V-0.7 V voltage range,this work puts forward a concomitant and gradual phase transformation from γ’-V_(2)O_(5) to zinc pyrovanadate Zn_(3)V_(2)O_(7)(OH)2.2 H_(2)O(ZVO)during *** mechanism involving the in-situ formation of ZVO,known as an efficient Zn and Li intercalation material,explains the high electrochemical performance here reported for the Zn‖γ’-V_(2)O_(5) *** work highlights the peculiar layered-puckeredγ’-V_(2)O_(5) polymorph outperforms the conventionalα-V_(2)O_(5) with a huge improvement of capacity of 240 mAh g^(-1)vs 80 mAh g^(-1) in the same electrolyte and voltage window.

AIM: To determine whether the association of β-blockers with endoscopic treatment is superior to endoscopic treatment alone for the secondary prophylaxis of oesophageal variceal bleeding. METHODS: Randomised controlled trials comparing sclerotherapy (SCL) with SCL plus β-blockers (BB) or banding ligation (BL) with BL plus BB were identif *** outcomes were overall and 6, 12 and 24 mo rebleeding rates, as well as overall and 6, 12 and 24 mo mortality. Two statistical methods were used: Yusuf-Peto, and Der Simonian and Laird. Inter-trial heterogeneity was systematically taken into account. RESULTS: Seventeen randomised controlled trials were included, 14 with SCL and 3 with BL. Combination β-blocker and endoscopic treatment signif icantly reduced rebleeding rates at 6, 12 and 24 mo and overall [odds ratio (OR): 2.20, 95% conf idence interval (CI): 1.69-2.85, P<0.0001] compared to endoscopic treatment alone. Mortality at 24 mo was signif icantly lower for the combined treatment group (OR: 1.83, 95% CI:1.16-2.90, P= 0.009), as well as overall mortality (OR: 1.43, 95% CI:1.03-1.98, P= 0.03). CONCLUSION: Combination therapy should thus be recommended as the fi rst line treatment for secondary prophylaxis of oesophageal variceal bleeding.

This paper investigates how state diagrams can be best represented in the polychronous model of computation (MoC) and proposes to use this model for code validation of behavior specifications in architecture analysis & design language (AADL). In this relational MoC, the basic objects are signals, which are related through dataflow equations. Signals are associated with logical clocks, which provide the capability to describe systems in which components obey multiple clock rates. We propose a model of finite-state automata, called polychronous automata, which is based on clock relationships. A specificity of this model is that an automaton is submitted to clock constraints, which allows one to specify a wide range of control-related configurations, being either reactive or restrictive with respect to their control environment. A semantic model is defined for these polychronous automata, which relies on boolean algebra of clocks. Based on a previously defined modeling method for AADL software architectures using the polychronous MoC, the proposed model is used as a formal model for the AADL behavior annex. This is illustrated with a case study involving an adaptive cruise control system.

Theoretical study on the geometries and electronic properties of new conjugated compounds based on thiophene and phenylene was carried out. The theoretical ground-state geometries and electronic structures of the studied molecules were obtained using the density functional theory (DFT) method at B3LYP level with 6-31G(d) basis set. The electronic properties were determined by ZINDO/s, CIS/3-21G(d), and TD//B3LYP/3-21G(d) calculations performed on the B3LYP/6-31(d) optimized geometries. The effects of the ring structure and the substituents on the geometries and electronic properties of these materials were discussed. The results of this study indicate how the electronic properties can be tuned by the backbone ring or side group and suggest these compounds as good candidates for opto-electronic applications.

The effect of landscape complexity and microclimate on the thermal tolerance of a pest insect

Landscape changes are known to exacerbate the impacts of climate change. As such, understanding the combined effect of climate and landscape on agroecosystems is vital if we are to maintain the fimction of agroecosystems. This study aimed to elucidate the effects of agricultural landscape complexity on the microclimate and thermal tolerance of an aphid pest to better understand how landscape and climate may interact to affect the thermal tolerance of pest species within the context of global climate change. Meteo- rological data were measured at the landscape level, and cereal aphids （Sitobion avenae, Metopolophium dirhodum and Rhopalosiphum padi） sampled, from contrasting landscapes （simple and complex） in winter 2013/2014 and spring 2014 in cereal fields of Brittany, France. Aphids were returned to the laboratory and the effect of landscape of origin on aphid cold tolerance （as determined by CTmin） was investigated. Results revealed that local landscape complexity significantly affected microclimate, with simple homogenous landscapes being on average warmer, but with greater temperature variation. Landscape complexity was shown to impact aphid cold tolerance, with aphids from complex land- scapes being more cold tolerant than those from simple landscapes in both winter and spring, but with differences among species. This study highlights that future changes to land use could have implications for the thermal tolerance and adaptability of insects. Fur- thermore, not all insect species respond in a similar way to microhabitat and microclimate, which could disrupt important predator-prey relationships and the ecosystem service they provide.

AIM： To determine whether prior appendectomy modifies the phenotype and severity of Crohn＇s disease. METHODS： Appendectomy status and smoking habits were specified by direct interview in 2838 patients consecutively seen between 1995 and 2004. Occurrence of complications and therapeutic needs were reviewed retrospectively. Additionally, annual disease activity was assessed prospectively between 1995 and 2004 in patients who had not had ileocecal resection and of a matched control group. RESULTS： Compared to 1770 non-appendectomized patients, appendectomized patients more than 5 years before Crohn＇s disease diagnosis （n=716） were more often females, smokers, with ileal disease. Cox regression showed that prior appendectomy was positively related to the risk of intestinal stricture （adjusted hazard ratio, 1.24; 95% confidence interval, 1.13 to 1.36; P=0.02） and inversely related to the risk of perianal fistulization （adjusted hazard ratio, 0.75; 95% confidence interval, 0.68 to 0.83; P=0.002）. No difference was observed between the two groups regarding the therapeutic needs, except for an increased risk of surgery in appendectomized patients, attributable to the increased prevalence of ileal disease. Between 1995 and 2004, Crohn＇s disease was active during 50% of years in appendectomized patients （1318 out of 2637 patientyears） and 51% in non-appendectomized patients （1454 out of 2841 patient-years; NS）. CONCLUSION： Prior appendectomy is associated with a more proximal disease and has an increased risk of stricture and a lesser risk of anal fistulization. However, the severity of the disease is unaffected.
