Performances of local poultry breed fed black soldier fly larvae reared on horse manure

In poultry,feed based on maggots,like larvae of black soldier fly(Hermetia illucens) is an attractive option to substitute current ingredients which are expensive and often in direct or indirect competition with human food.Little information is currently available on the utility of these larvae in poultry feed,so goals of this study were to determine whether larvae could be reared on horse manure under traditional farming conditions and to evaluate the growth performances of a local poultry fed these larvae and the fatty acids profiles of their meat.After freezing and thawing,larvae were introduced in the feed of Ardennaise chickens between 30 and 80 days of age.Birds in the control group received a commercial standard feed,while those in the treatment group received the same commercial feed in which 8% was substituted with whole fresh larvae corresponding to 2% on a dry matter basis.Means ± standard errors of larval length and weight were 20.67 ± 2.21 mm and 0.14 ± 0.02 g,respectively.Mean larval percentages of dry matter and of substances extractable in diethyl ether were 24.6% and 23.1%,respectively.Larval fatty acids profiles were predominantly composed of lauric acid(28.1%) and palmitic acid(22.0%).Least squares means of weekly weights of chicken,adjusted for the effects of sex,replication and initial weights,were significantly higher(P < 0.05) by 77.03 ± 53.37 g in larvae-fed than in control chickens.All other measurements were not statistically different between larvae-fed and control chicken,including fatty acid profiles,protein content and w6/w3 ratio.

Hydrogen-powered electric aircraft have attracted significant interests aiming to achieve decarbonization targets.Onboard DC electric networks are facing great challenges in DC fault protection requirements.Vacuum interrupters are widely used in low voltage and medium voltage power systems due to being environmentally friendly with low maintenance.In this paper a moving coil actuator with compensation coils for a vacuum interrupter,as part of a hybrid direct current circuit breaker,is designed and experimentally tested.Compensation coils are used to improve operating speed compared with original moving coil actuator.Comparisons between four possible connections of compensation coils and original moving coil actuator are carried out.Experimental results show comparisons between different connections of actuator coils in terms of opening time and coil current with a range of pre-charged capacitor voltages.Dynamic performance of each actuator connection is also compared.The actuator with compensation coils is shown to have a higher current rising rate and achieve faster opening speed,which is a critical requirement for electric aircraft network protection.The parallel connection actuator achieves the highest opening speed within 3.5 ms with capacitor voltage of 50 V.

From Control Theory to Gravitational Waves

When D:ξ→η is a linear ordinary differential (OD) or partial differential (PD) operator, a “direct problem” is to find the generating compatibility conditions (CC) in the form of an operator D1:η→ξ such that Dξ = η implies D1η = 0. When D is involutive, the procedure provides successive first-order involutive operators D1,...,Dn when the ground manifold has dimension n. Conversely, when D1 is given, a much more difficult “inverse problem” is to look for an operator D:ξ→η having the generating CC D1η = 0. If this is possible, that is when the differential module defined by D1 is “torsion-free”, that is when there does not exist any observable quantity which is a sum of derivatives of η that could be a solution of an autonomous OD or PD equation for itself, one shall say that the operator D1 is parametrized by D. The parametrization is said to be “minimum” if the differential module defined by D does not contain a free differential submodule. The systematic use of the adjoint of a differential operator provides a constructive test with five steps using double differential duality. We prove and illustrate through many explicit examples the fact that a control system is controllable if and only if it can be parametrized. Accordingly, the controllability of any OD or PD control system is a “built in” property not depending on the choice of the input and output variables among the system variables. In the OD case and when D1 is formally surjective, controllability just amounts to the formal injectivity of ad(D1), even in the variable coefficients case, a result still not acknowledged by the control community. Among other applications, the parametrization of the Cauchy stress operator in arbitrary dimension n has attracted many famous scientists (G. B. Airy in 1863 for n = 2, J. C. Maxwell in 1870, E. Peanut is a worldwide oilseed crop and the need to assess germplasm in a non-destructive manner is important for seed nutritional breeding.In this study,Near Infrared Spectroscopy(NIRS)was applied to rapidly assess germplasm variability from whole seed of 699 samples,field-collected and assembled in four genetic and environmentbased sets:one set of 300 varieties of a core-collection and three sets of 133 genotypes of an interspecific population,evaluated in three environments in a large spatial scale of two countries,Mbalmayo and Bafia in Cameroon and Nioro in Senegal,under rainfed conditions.NIR elemental spectra were gathered on six subsets of seeds of each sample,after three rotation scans,with a spectral resolution of 16 cm-1over the spectral range of867 nm to 2530 nm.Spectra were then processed by principal component analysis(PCA)coupled with Partial least squares-discriminant analysis(PLS-DA).As results,a huge variability was found between varieties and genotypes for all NIR wavelength within and between environments.The magnitude of genetic variation was particularly observed at 11 relevant wavelengths such as 1723 nm,usually related to oil content and fatty acid composition.PCA yielded the most chemical attributes in three significant PCs(i.e.,eigenvalues>10),which together captured 93%of the total variation,revealing genetic and environment structure of varieties and genotypes into four clusters,corresponding to the four samples sets.The pattern of genetic variability of the interspecific population covers,remarkably half of spectrum of the core-collection,turning out to be the largest.Interestingly,a PLS-DA model was developed and a strong accuracy of 99.6%was achieved for the four sets,aiming to classify each seed sample according to environment origin.The confusion matrix achieved for the two sets of Bafia and Nioro showed 100%of instances classified correctly with 100%at both sensitivity and specificity,confirming that their seed quality was different from each other and all other samples.Overall,NIR

Polysiloxane coatings on microspheres based on Multiphase Flow with Interface Exchange-Discrete Element Modelling

Polysiloxane coatings on yttria stabilized zirconia(YSZ)microspheres of 500μm were simulated in a spout fluidized bed coater using Multiphase Flow with Interface Exchange-Discrete Element Modelling(MFiX-DEM).Two different coater configurations were developed to study the influence of gas velocity and its distribution on particle dynamics.The presence of the Wurster tube not only enhances the dis-tribution but also increases the overall residence time of the particles.Investigations were also carried out with different Wurster tube positions(normal,10%and 20%lowered from its initial position).Among these,20%lowered Wurster tube position demonstrated the most effective coating process.The effects of gas inlet pressure on the average gas velocity and the distribution of particles were analyzed.More than 97%of the particles can be retained.The derived results,including average gas velocity,particle retention percentage,and distribution of particles with gas velocity,are being used to guide the experimental work in obtaining defect-free coatings for YSZ microspheres.

Kinetic Slip Boundary Condition for Isothermal Rarefied Gas Flows through Static Non-Planar Geometries Based on the Regularized Lattice-Boltzmann Method

The simulation of rarefied gasflows through complex porous media is chal-lenging due to the tortuousflow pathways inherent to such structures.The Lattice Boltzmann method(LBM)has been identified as a promising avenue to solveflows through complex geometries due to the simplicity of its scheme and its high parallel computational efficiency.It has been proposed to model the stress-strain relationship with the extended Navier-Stokes equations rather than attempting to directly solve the Boltzmann equation.However,a regularization technique is required tofilter out non-resolved higher-order components with a low-order velocity scheme.Although slip boundary conditions(BCs)have been proposed for the non-regularized multiple relaxation time LBM(MRT-LBM)for planar geometries,previous slip BCs have never been verified extensively with the regularization technique.In this work,following an extensive literature review on the imposition of slip BCs for rarefiedflows with the LBM,it is proven that earlier values for kinetic parameters developed to impose slip BCs are inaccurate for the regularized MRT-LBM and differ between the D2Q9 and D3Q15 schemes.The error was eliminated for planarflows and good agreement be-tween analytical solutions for arrays of cylinders and spheres was found with a wide range of Knudsen numbers.

Impact of time to diagnosis on the occurrence of cardiogenic shock in MIS‑C post‑COVID-19 infection

Background In multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children(MIS-C),diagnostic delay could be associated with severity.This study aims to measure the time to diagnosis in MIS-C,assess its impact on the occurrence of cardiogenic shock,and specify its determinants.Methods A single-center prospective cohort observational study was conducted between May 2020 and July 2022 at a tertiary care hospital.Children meeting the World Health Organization MIS-C criteria were included.A long time to diagnosis was defined as six days or more.Data on time to diagnosis were collected by two independent physicians.The primary outcome was the occurrence of cardiogenic shock.Logistic regression and receiver operating characteristic curve analysis were used for outcomes,and a Cox proportional hazards model was used for determinants.Results Totally 60 children were assessed for inclusion,and 31 were finally analyzed[52%males,median age 8.8(5.7-10.7)years].The median time to diagnosis was 5.3(4.2-6.2)days.In univariable analysis,age above the median,time to diagnosis,high C-reactive protein,and high N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide(NT-proBNP)were associated with cardiogenic shock[odds ratio(OR)6.13(1.02-36.9),2.79(1.15-6.74),2.08(1.05-4.12),and 1.70(1.04-2.78),respectively].In multivariable analysis,time to diagnosis≥6 days was associated with cardiogenic shock[adjusted OR(aOR)21.2(1.98-227)].Time to diagnosis≥6 days had a sensitivity of 89% and a specificity of 77% in predicting cardiogenic shock;the addition of age>8 years and NT-proBNP at diagnosis≥11,254 ng/L increased the specificity to 91%.Independent determinants of short time to diagnosis were age<8.8 years[aHR 0.34(0.13-0.88)],short distance to tertiary care hospital[aHR 0.27(0.08-0.92)],and the late period of the COVID-19 pandemic[aHR 2.48(1.05-5.85)].Conclusions Time to diagnosis≥6 days was independently associated with cardiogenic shock in MIS-C.Early diagnosis and treatment are crucial to avoid the use of inotropes and limit morbidity,especially in older children.

Objective The multidisciplinary antenatal diagnosis staff bring together practitioners who are involved in the management of the antenatal period at birth.This project was designed following the French experience to institute multidisciplinary consultation meetings for prenatal diagnosis(MCMPD)in Benin.Methods This is a descriptive cross-sectional study examining the knowledge,attitudes,and practices of Beninese practitioners in the field of MCMPD to develop the pilot phase of the project.Results We collected 108 participants from different specialties.Pediatricians and pediatric surgeons were in the majority at 23.9% and 16.5%,respectively.Sixty-seven percent of participants were from the public sector(n=75).One practitioner felt that it was not a good idea to implement these meetings.Almost all staff(96.2%)agreed that this meeting would have a positive impact on reducing neonatal mortality.Omphalocele(58.5%),spina bifida aperta(43.6%),and gastroschisis(34%)were the most commonly diagnosed antenatal conditions in Benin.No neonatal pathology required medical termination of the pregnancy according to 35.6% of the participants.Conclusions The objective of reducing infant mortality due to medical and surgical pathologies is a noble one and deserves to be supported.This innovative project,developed through this study,the first of its kind in the subregion,will contribute inexorably to the achievement of the third Goal Sustainable Development.

Onto Orthogonal Projections in the Space of Polynomials P_n[x]

In this article, I consider projection groups on function spaces, more specifically the space of polynomials Pn[x]. I will show that a very similar construct of projection operators allows us to project into the subspaces of Pn[x] where the function h ∈Pn[x] represents the closets function to f ∈Pn[x] in the least square sense. I also demonstrate that we can generalise projections by constructing operators i.e. in Rn+1 using the metric tensor on Pn[x]. This allows one to project a polynomial function onto another by mapping it to its coefficient vector in Rn+1. This can be also achieved with the Kronecker Product as detailed in this paper.
