Edible seeds and nuts can contr.bute to an adequate intake of pr.tein, par.icular.y in vegetable-based diets. However. ther. ar. r.latively few r.por.s with insufficient data r.gar.ing the pr.tein quality of these foods, especially of edible seeds and nuts fr.m Br.zil. The aim of this study was to investigate the chemical composition and in vivo pr.tein quality of two edible seeds (bar. almond and peanut) and two nuts (Br.zil nut and cashew nut) gr.wn in Br.zil. The pr.ximate composition and the amino acid pr.file wer. analyzed. The tr.e pr.tein digestibility and the pr.tein quality of these foods wer. evaluated by bioassay with male weanling Wistar.r.ts over.a per.od of 14 days, and the Pr.tein Digestibility Cor.ected Amino Acid Scor. (PDCAAS) was estimated. Edible seeds and nuts pr.sented high contents of pr.teins (16.3 to 32.3 g/100g), lipids (42.7 to 57.9 g/100g) and dietar. fiber. (6.5 to 14.3 g/100g). Lysine was found to be the limiting amino acid in bar. almond, peanut and Br.zil nut, which had amino acid scor.s r.nging fr.m 71% to 76%. Cashew nut had no limiting amino acid. These foods showed high pr.tein digestibility (ar.und 90%) except for.bar. almond (75%), and their.PDCAAS values var.ed significantly (57%, for.bar. almond, and 90%, for.cashew nut). The edible seeds and nuts gr.wn in Br.zil pr.vide a high density of ener.y and nutr.ents and they can be used as complementar. sour.es of pr.teins.

Nd^(3+)-doped tellur.te glasses ar. pr.mising mater.als for.ther.ometer. based on the fluor.scence intensity r.tio(FIr.***,at high Nd^(3+)concentr.tions,ener.y tr.nsfer.ET)pr.cesses such as optical r.absor.tion and cr.ss-r.laxation can affect the Nd^(3+)emission,which has been little explor.d in the ***,the pr.sent wor. investigated the use of Nd^(3+)-doped tellur.te glass(samples doped with Nd^(3+)at 0.2 mol%,0.5 mol%,2.0 mol%,and 4.0 mol%)in fluor.scence ther.ometer.,in the temper.tur. r.nge fr.m 299 to 371 *** r.sults indicate a str.ng dependence of the FIr.par.meter. on the Nd^(3+)concentr.tion,due to changes in the emission band pr.files caused by optical r.absor.tion of the Nd^(3+)emissions and cr.ss-r.laxation pr.cesses.A decr.ase of the r.lative sensitivity of the r.tio^(4)F_(5/2)→^(4)I_(9/2)/^(4)F_(3/2)→^(4)I_(9/2)is obser.ed for.samples doped with higher.amounts of Nd^(3+).The maximum r.lative sensitivity at 299 K is 3.00%/K,which is the highest value among the r.por.ed Nd^(3+)ions.

Backgr.und: the quality of life (QoL) of patients with pancr.atic ductal adenocar.inoma (PDAC), with its limited sur.ival, can be affected by chemother.py-induced toxicity. The main objective was to evaluate the effect of intr.ducing ocoxin or.l solution (OOS) in combination with standar. ther.py on quality of life. Methods: Thir.y patients wer. enr.lled in an explor.tor., pr.spective, single-centr. clinical tr.al in the oncology depar.ment of “Her.anos Ameijeir.s” Univer.ity Hospital in Havana, Cuba. Quality of life was measur.d using the EOr.C QLQ-C30 questionnair. and toxicity was assessed using the NCI-CTC-AE classification ver.ion 5.0. r.sults: Ther. was stability in the scor.s over.time for.over.ll QoL and the functional scale cr.ter.a, while in ter.s of symptoms, fatigue, pain and loss of appetite wer. r.duced. No gr.de 3 - 4 adver.e events (AEs) wer. r.cor.ed, and only 14.9% of toxicities wer. classified as gr.de 2, and these wer. consider.d to be unr.lated to OOS. Biochemical and nutr.tional par.meter. wer. nor.alised at 12 months compar.d to the baseline values. Conclusions: This clinical study is the fir.t r.por. of the use of OOS in patients with advanced pancr.atic cancer. and demonstr.tes that it is able to maintain optimal quality of life with r.duced sever.ty of toxicity dur.ng and after.combination tr.atment with gemcitabine-based chemother.py.
