Soil organic matter (SOM) is a complex heterogeneous mixture formed through decomposition and organo-mineral interactions, and characterization of its composition and biogeochemical stability is challenging. From this perspective, Rock-Eval® is a rapid and efficient thermal analytical method that combines the quantitative and qualitative information of SOM, including several parameters related to thermal stability. This approach has already been used to monitor changes in organic matter (OM) properties at the landscape, cropland, and soil profile scales. This study was aimed to assess the stability of SOM pools by characterizing the grain size fractions from forest litters and topsoils using Rock-Eval® thermal analysis. Litter (organic) and topsoil samples were collected from a beech forest in Normandy (France), whose management in the last 200 years has been documented. Fractionation by wet sieving was used to separate large debris (> 2 000 μm) and coarse (200–2 000 μm) and fine particulate OM (POM) (50–200 μm) in the organic samples as well as coarse (200–2 000 μm), medium (50–200 μm), and fine (< 50 μm) fractions of the topsoil samples. Rock-Eval® was able to provide thermal parameters sensitive enough to study fine-scale soil processes. In the organic layers, quantitative and qualitative changes were explained by the progressive decomposition of labile organic compounds from plant debris to the finest organic particles. Meanwhile, the grain size fractions of topsoils presented different characteristics. The coarse organo-mineral fractions showed higher C contents, albeit with a different composition, higher thermal stability, and greater decomposition degree than the plant debris forming the organic layer. These results are consistent with those of previous studies that microbial activity is more effective in this fraction. A cost-benefit analysis for the implementation of riparian buffer strips in the Shihmen reservoir watershed

The Shihmen reservoir is an important water source for about 3.4 million people in northern Taiwan. To protect reservoir water quality,it is necessary to conserve and manage the associated watersheds. Riparian buffer strips can trap pollutants emitted near a watershed.The location and design of a buffer strip can influence its pollutant-trapping efficiency.Any commitment of land for use as a riparian buffer strip must consider the project’s economic effectiveness.The present research is a cost-benefit analysis of various possible land developments in the Shihmen reservoir watershed.This study has applied a regression equation to evaluate pollutant-trapping efficiency levels of riparian buffer strips of various widths.Planned buffer strips have been evaluated in terms of net economic effectiveness and benefit-cost ratio.Results indicate that the optimal buffer strip width is 30 m for the Shihmen reservoir watershed.

Which Geopolitics for the European Union？ The EU＇s Eastern Partnership

This article discusses whether the European Union (EU) has engaged in a geopolitical approach when it comes to its Eastern neighbors, now included in the EU"s Eastern Partnership. The paper concludes that the EU has not engaged in a geopolitical approach when it comes to its policies towards its Eastern neighbors. Instead, it has approached them through the prisms of inter-connectedness and interdependency. The main reason for that rejection of geopolitical approach lies in the role that the EU has assigned to itself as an international actor, i. e. as a civilian and normative power. Finally, the use of civilian instruments would avoid the EU falling into a geopolitical trap that would lead to a zero sum game situation for its Eastern neighours in their relationships with Russia.

贵州双河洞是亚洲第一长洞,该洞先后分辨出近30多具大熊猫个体化石,是目前世界上发现完整大熊猫化石最多的洞穴。其中一支洞中竖井下方至少聚集了10余具个体化石。以此为研究对象,结合洞道发育形态特征及化石埋藏学特征,初步推测出这些大熊猫深入该支洞内经由竖井跌落并死亡的过程,表明喀斯特洞穴可以为大熊猫提供良好的栖息场所及化石保存环境。选取一例化石表面沉积的碳酸钙样品进行了铀系法测年,表明该个体至少生活在5.1万年前;对另一例个体的牙齿化石进行AMS14C测年,发现其生活在距今2.5万年左右,推断该洞道中大熊猫主要生活在晚更新世时期。

挥发性有机物(VOCs)诸如苯、甲苯、乙苯、和二甲苯异构体(BTEX)主要是从人为源排放或泄漏到环境中的。VOCs的水溶性和极性使其极可能污染地下水。因此,人们能够通过受污染的饮用水接触到挥发性有机物。对水基质中的挥发性有机物进行准确、连续的监测和量化,对于增进对有毒物质接触的了解,提高人的安全意识至关重要。VOCs浓度测定必须遵守法规。在本研究中,提出了一种解决方法,采用全自动气相色谱仪+火焰离子检测器(auto GC-FID),对在气态和液态样品中的浓度为痕量和超痕量的多达59种挥发性有机物(VOCs)组分(包括苯系物)进行种类定性和定量。采用的吹扫捕集技术用于从液相中汲取有代表性的化合物。该系统已在江苏省某水中挥发性有机物监测项目中得到应用。
