The experimental study carried out in this work contributes to the physico-mechanical characterization of the palm kernel shells (PKS) Elaeis guineensis of the DURA and TENERA varieties. The knowledge of these properties gives an idea of their behaviour in the realization of composites and others. The absolute density was determined by the method of pycnometer, the porosity and compactness of PKS too;respectively 1428.81 kg/m3 for Dura, 1395.81 kg/m3 for Tenera;0.041 for Dura, 0.158 for Tenera;0.958 for Dura, 0.841 for Tenera. The impact energy of PKS by the pendulum sheep method has an average value of 2.066 J/cm2 and 1.894 J/cm2 for Dura and Tenera respectively at a temperature of 26°C. The longitudinal Young’s modulus of 19 GPa and 17.9 GPa for Dura and Tenera, respectively, was determined by applying the Castigliano theorem through a three-point bending test device.

Background: A selective inhibitor of sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2), empagliflozin, has demonstrated its effects in reducing cardiovascular mortality and hospitalization rates for heart failure in type 2 diabetes patients. However, the cardiac-intrinsic mechanism for this cardiovascular benefit has not been sufficiently studied. We therefore aimed to investigate the effect of empagliflozin on left ventricular function in a group of patients with grade I hypertension. Methods: We carried out a single-arm non-randomized clinical trial at the National Obesity Centre in Yaoundé over a period of 8 months (October 2016 to May 2017), where patients were assigned to receive 25 mg of empagliflozin once daily. Cardiac ultrasound, 24-hour ambulatory blood pressure measurement, resting electrocardiography and biological assessment were carried out at baseline and at the end of a 6-week treatment period with empagliflozin. The primary outcome was the improvement of the left ventricular relaxation evaluation criteria. Ethical approval was obtained from the Centre Regional Ethics Committee in Yaoundé, Cameroon. Two novel coordination compounds, [Zn(L)2(OOCH)2] (1) and [Zn(L)3(OCHO)](OCHO)]·H2O (2) (where L = 2-isopropylimidazole, C6H10N2) have been prepared by reaction of 2-isopropylimidazole with zinc(II) formate at room temperature using toluene as solvent. These compounds were characterized by elemental and thermal analyses, IR, 1HNMR and 13CNMR spectroscopies, single crystal X-ray diffraction and DFT studies. The Zn centers in 1 and 2 adopt pseudo-tetrahedral coordination geometries. Compound 1 crystallizes in the monoclinic system P2/c space group whereas compound 2 crystallizes in the P-1 space group of the triclinic crystal system. Several types of hydrogen intra-/intermolecular interactions are observed in these materials and extend into a two-dimensional leaf like network in 1 and a two-dimensional lattice of rectilinear pillars in 2. Compounds 1 and 2 were also optimized and their frontier molecular orbitals, global reactivity descriptors, molecular electrostatic potential, natural bond orbitals were investigated using density functional theory (DFT). In fact the induced structural differences from complex 1 to complex 2 led to the reduction of the frontier molecular orbital energy gap by 1.338 eV and a decrease of the chemical hardness by 0.669 eV.

Two novel copper complexes (1,2) with N,O-donor ligands were synthesized by reaction of copper(II) malonates with 3,3’-bis(pyrazolyl)pentane and 4,4’-trimethylenedipyridine in methanol at moderate temperature. These compounds were characterized by elemental analysis, UV-VIS, IR spectroscopies and powder X-ray diffraction analyses. Compound (1) melts at higher temperature (202°C) than compound (2) (100°C). The IR spectra showed typical vibrations related to C=N and C=C, characteristic of pyrazolyl and pyridine ligands.

The reaction of 2-ethylimidazole and zinc formate monohydrate in 1:2 ratio in toluene leads to the formation of bis(2-ethylimidazole)bis(formato)zinc(II)-water (1/1), [Zn(N2H8C5)2(OCHO)2]·H2O, 1 which has been characterized by several techniques, including elemental and thermal analyses, IR, 1HNMR and 13CNMR spectroscopies, single crystal X-ray diffraction and DFT studies. The results obtained show that this complex crystallizes in the orthorhombic crystal system of the Pbca space group, with cell parameters a = 14.7230(2) Å, b = 7.3880(10) Å, c = 29.0843(4) Å, α = 90°, β = 90°, γ = 90°, V = 3163.73 Å3 and Z = 8. The zinc center is bound to two molecules of 2-ethylimidazole, two formate molecules in a tetrahedral coordination geometry. One water of crystallization is present in the coordination sphere of the compound. Its molecular crystalline structure is strengthened by O/N-H…O, O-H…π, O-H…H, C-H…O, H…π, π…O and π…π interactions. The optimized structure, frontier molecular orbitals, global reactivity descriptors, molecular electrostatic potential, natural bond orbitals and the Mulliken atomic charges were investigated through theoretical studies.

The reaction of benzene-1,2,3-tricarboxylate copper(II) trihydrate (Cu3(1,2,3-BTC)2·3H2O) and ethylenediamine (en) gave after recrystallization from methanol at room temperature violet crystalline solid of the polymeric two dimensional material {[Cu3(μ3-1,2,3-BTC)(μ2-1,2,3-BTC)(en)3(OH2)2(OH)(μ2-OH2)]2·5H2O·O}n (1) as identified by single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. The compound was also characterized by elemental analysis, FT-IR spectroscopy, UV-vis spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and magnetic susceptibility. The molecular structure indicates crystallization in the triclinic space group P-1 with the unit cell parameters a = 12.1205(3) Å, b = 12.7026(3) Å, c = 13.9890(3) Å, α = 75.034(1)°, β = 74.957(1)°, γ = 68.415(1)°. Structural analysis also revealed that the dimeric compound is connected by Cu-O-Cu bridges and the dimer is further converted into a polymeric chain structure through bridging of one benzene-1,2,3-tricarboxylate ligand. New cobalt(II) complex, [Co(O2C15H11N2S)2(OH2)2]∙2H2O (1∙2H2O), has been synthesized upon reaction of cobalt chloride hexahydrate (Co(Cl)2∙6H2O) with 3-methyl-1-Phenyl-4-(2-thienoyl)-pyrazol-5-one (referred as HL) in ethanol at room temperature. Single crystal X-ray diffraction (XRD), spectroscopic methods, and microelemental analyses were used to characterize 1∙2H2O. Compound 1∙2H2O crystallizes in the orthorhombic crystal system with a Pbca space group and with the cobalt atom being pseudo-octahedral coordinated. The broth microdilution technique was used to screen the free ligand (HL) and the complex (1∙2H2O) for antimicrobial activities. HL has a low activity (MIC > 100 μg/mL) on all microorganisms, whereas compound 1∙2H2O displayed moderate activity (10 ∙2H2O exhibited bactericidal and fungicidal activity respectively on all the bacteria and yeasts tested. These findings reveal that the antimicrobial activity of HL was enhanced upon coordination to Co(II) ion against all microorganisms (bacteria and fungus).

Depression and Suicidal Ideations among Prisoners of the Douala Central Prison

Introduction: The prison environment is a conducive environment for the development of psychiatric pathologies such as depression and suicidal ideation. To date, no related study has been conducted in Douala, Cameroon. We have therefore undertaken to study the prevalence of these pathologies and their related factors among inmates of the Douala Central Prison. Method: We conducted a cross-sectional study of 309 prisoners over a 6-month period from 1 January to 31 June 2022. This involved prisoners aged 18 years and over, who were consenting and able to read and write. Data were collected during individual interviews using a structured questionnaire. Depression was assessed by the BECK Short Form Depression Inventory and suicidal ideation was assessed by the MINI. These data were processed using the SPSS version 25.0 software. The related factors were studied in bivariate and multivariate analysis. Results: Most of the prisoners were male (97%), and more than half knew their criminal status. The prevalence of depression was 33.7% and that of suicide ideation was 22.7%. Among the factors associated with depression were receiving social visits and suicidal ideation. A history of physical/psychological abuse, repeated offences and prison violence were protective factors. Factors associated with suicidal ideation were the absence of social visits, physical abuse in childhood, smoking in prison and depression. Suicidal ideation was independently associated with depression as well as depression being independently associated with suicidal ideation. Conclusion: About 1/3 of the prisoners had depression and almost 1/4 had suicidal ideations. As a result of this and the related factors, there is a need to reorganize psychiatric care within our prison context.

Objective: To determine the early electrocardiographic changes in a cohort of ambulatory cameroonian COVID-19 patients treated with hydroxychlo- roquine and Azithromycin. Design: Prospective study. Setting: Treatment centres of the city of Yaounde, Cameroon, from May 7th to 24th 2020. Participants: We enrolled 51 consecutive confirmed COVID-19 on RT-PCR who having mild forms of COVID-19 and treated by hydroxychloroquine 200 mg twice daily during seven #days plus Azithromycin 500 mg the first day and 250 mg the remaining 4 days as per national standard. Main Outcomes Measures: The primary end-point was the change in QTc interval between day 0 (D0), day 3 (D3) and day 7 (D7). Secondary endpoints were changes in all other cardiac electrical conductivity patterns and the occurrence of clinical arrhythmic events during the course of treatment.
