Deep convolutional neural network for damaged vegetation segmentation from RGB images based on virtual NIR-channel estimation

Performing accurate and automated semantic segmentation of vegetation is a first algorithmic step towards more complex models that can extract accurate biological information on crop health,weed presence and phenological state,among others.Traditionally,models based on normalized difference vegetation index(NDVI),near infrared channel(NIR)or RGB have been a good indicator of vegetation presence.However,these methods are not suitable for accurately segmenting vegetation showing damage,which precludes their use for downstream phenotyping algorithms.In this paper,we propose a comprehensive method for robust vegetation segmentation in RGB images that can cope with damaged vegetation.The method consists of a first regression convolutional neural network to estimate a virtual NIR channel from an RGB image.Second,we compute two newly proposed vegetation indices from this estimated virtual NIR:the infrared-dark channel subtraction(IDCS)and infrared-dark channel ratio(IDCR)indices.Finally,both the RGB image and the estimated indices are fed into a semantic segmentation deep convolutional neural network to train a model to segment vegetation regardless of damage or condition.The model was tested on 84 plots containing thirteen vegetation species showing different degrees of damage and acquired over 28 days.The results show that the best segmentation is obtained when the input image is augmented with the proposed virtual NIR channel(F1=0:94)and with the proposed IDCR and IDCS vegetation indices(F1=0:95)derived from the estimated NIR channel,while the use of only the image or RGB indices lead to inferior performance(RGB(F1=0:90)NIR(F1=0:82)or NDVI(F1=0:89)channel).The proposed method provides an end-to-end land cover map segmentation method directly from simple RGB images and has been successfully validated in real field conditions.

Ceria on alumina support for catalytic pyrolysis of Pavlova sp. microalgae to high-quality bio-oils

In this work,we report for the first time the in-situ catalytic pyrolysis of Pavlova sp.microalgae,which has been performed in a fixed-bed reactor in presence of Ce/Al2O3-based catalysts.The effects of pyrolysis parameters,such as temperature and catalyst were studied on the products yield distribution and biooil composition,among others.Results showed that all catalysts increased the bio-oil yield with respect to the non-catalytic runs and reduced the O/C ratio from 0.69（Pavlova sp.）to 0.1–0.15,which is close to that of crude oil.In terms of bio-oil oxygen content,Mg Ce/Al2O3presented the best performance with a reduction of more than 30%,from 14.1 to 9.8 wt%,of the oxygen concentration in comparison with thermal pyrolysis.However,Ni Ce/Al2O3gave rise to the highest aliphatics/aromatics fractions.The elemental and gas analysis indicates that N was partially removed from the catalytic bio-oils in the gas phase in forms of NH3and HCN.

Updates on the hepatocyte growth factor/c-Met axis in hepatocellular carcinoma and its therapeutic implications

Hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC) is the fifth most common cancer and is the second leading cause of cancer death. Since the diagnosis of HCC is difficult, in many cases patients with HCC are diagnosed advanced stage of development. Hepatocyte growth factor(HGF)/c-mesenchymal-epithelial transition receptor(c-Met) axis is a key signaling pathway in HCC, either via canonical or non-canonical pathways. Available treatments against HCC based upon HGF/c-Met inhibition can increase patient lifespan, but do not reach the expected therapeutic benefits. In HCC, c-Met monomers can bind other receptor monomers, activating several noncanonical signaling pathways, leading to increased cell proliferation, invasion, motility, and drug resistance. All of these processes are enhanced by the tumor microenvironment, with stromal cells contributing to boost tumor progression through oxidative stress, angiogenesis, lymphangiogenesis, inflammation, and fibrosis. Novel treatments against HCC are being explored to modulate other targets such as microR NAs, methyltransferases, and acetyltransferases, which are all involved in the regulation of gene expression in cancer. This review compiles basic knowledge regarding signaling pathways in HCC, and compounds already used or showing potential to be used in clinical trials.

Extracellular vesicles in liver disease and beyond

Extracellular vesicles(EVs) are membrane-derived vesicles which can be released by different cell types, including hepatocytes, hepatic stellate cells and immune cells in normal and pathological conditions. EVs carry lipids, proteins, coding and non-coding RNAs and mitochondrial DNA causing modifications on the recipient cells. These vesicles are considered potential biomarkers and therapeutic agents for human diagnostic and prognostic due to their function as intercellular mediators of cell-cell communication within the liver and between other organs. However, the development and optimization of methods for EVs isolation is required to characterize their biological functions as well as their potential as a treatment option in the clinic. Nevertheless, many questions remain unanswered related to the function of EVs under physiological and pathological conditions. In the current editorial, the results obtained in different studies that investigated the role of intrahepatic EVs during liver diseases, including drug-induced liver injury, non-alcoholic fatty liver, nonalcoholic steatohepatitis, alcoholic liver disease and hepatocellular carcinoma and extrahepatic EVs in remote organs during pathological events such as pulmonary disease, cardiovascular diseases, neurodegenerative disorders e.g., Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease and multiple sclerosis as well as in immunopathological processes, are discussed. Although much light needs to be shed on the mechanisms of EVs, these membranederived vesicles represent both a novel promising diagnostic, and a therapeutic tool for clinical use that we emphasize in the current editorial.

Enhancing first-principles simulations of complex solid-state ion conductors using topological analysis of procrystal electron density

Atomistic-level understanding of ion migration mechanisms holds the key to design high-performance solid-state ion conductors for a breadth of electrochemical devices.First-principles simulations play an important role in this quest.Yet,these methods are generally computationally-intensive,with limited access to complex,low-symmetry structures,such as interfaces.Here we show how topological analysis of the procrystal electron density can be applied to efficiently mitigate this issue.We discuss how this methodology goes beyond current state of the art capabilities and demonstrate this with two examples.In the first,we examine Li-ion transport across grain boundaries in Li_(3)ClO electrolyte.Then,we compute diffusion coefficients as a function of charge carrier concentration in spinel LiTiS_(2) electrode material.These two case studies do not exhaust the opportunities and might constitute motivations for still more complex applied materials.

The increase in global electricity consumption has made energy efficiency a priority for governments.Consequently,there has been a focus on the efficient integration of a massive penetration of electric vehicles(EVs)into energy markets.This study presents an assessment of various strategies for EV aggregators.In this analysis,the smart charging methodology proposed in a previous study is considered.The smart charging technique employs charging power rate modulation and considers user preferences.To adopt several strategies,this study simulates the effect of these actions in a case study of a distribution system from the city of Quito,Ecuador.Different actions are simulated,and the EV aggregator costs and technical conditions are evaluated.

Adsorption of Toxic Metals and Control of Mosquitos-borne Disease by Lysinibacillus sphaericus:Dual Benefits for Health and Environment

Objective Assessment of the bacterium L. sphaericus as a dual-action candidate for biological control of mosquito-borne diseases and bioremediation of toxic metals. Methods Larvae of the mosquito, C quinquefasciatus, were first evaluated for metal tolerance and then exposed to 5 ppm cadmium, chromium, arsenic, and lead in assays together with seven strains of L. sphaericus. A probit regression analysis was used to estimate the LCso of Cd, Cr, As, and Pb to C. quinquefosciatus. An analysis of covariance and multifactorial ANOVA examined the metal biosorption and larvicidal properties of the seven strains of L. sphaericus. Results We found that L. sphaericus adsorbed the toxic metal ions and was toxic against mosquito larvae. The L. sphoericus strain 111（3）7 resulted in a larvae mortality of over 80% for all the tested metals. This strain also exhibited the capacity to adsorb 76% of arsenic, 32% of lead, 25% of chromium, and 7% of cadmium. Conclusion This study found combined metal adsorption and larval toxicity associated with three strains of L. sphaericus [111（3）7, OT4b.31, and CBAM5]. This suggests that a combination of these strains shows strong dual potential for biological control of mosquitos in heavy metal-contaminated areas and remediate the heavy metal contamination as well.

Manipulation of parasite load induces significant changes in the structural-based throat color of male iberian green lizards

The honesty of structural-based ornaments is controversial. Sexual selection theory predicts that the honesty of a sexual signal relies on its cost of production or maintenance. Therefore, environmental factors with negative impact on individuals could generate high costs and affect the expression of these sexual signals. In this sense, parasites are a main cost for their hosts. To probe the effect of parasites on the structural-based coloration of a lacertid species , we have experimentally removed ticks from a group of male Iberian green lizards using an acaricide treatment (i.e., the broad-use insecticide fipronil). All individuals were radio-tracked and recaptured after 15 days to study changes in coloration in both the ultraviolet (UV)-blue (structural-based) and UV-yellow (structural and pigment-based) ornamentations after manipulation, as well as changes in endo- and ectoparasitic load and body condition. Additionally, after the experiment, we measured the skin inflammatory response to a mitogen. The fipronil treatment was effective in reducing ticks and it was associated with a significant reduction of hemoparasite load. Throughout the season, individuals treated with fipronil tended to maintain the brightness of the UV-blue throat coloration while control lizards tended to increase it. However, individuals treated with fipronil that were not infected with hemoparasites significantly reduced the brightness of the UV-blue throat coloration. Individuals with a higher initial tick load exhibited a lower UV saturation increment (UV-blue) and a higher brightness increment (UV-yellow) during the experiment. Overall these results experimentally support the idea that parasites adversely influence the expression of the structural-based coloration of male Iberian green lizards. This adds evidence to the hypothesis that sexual ornaments in lizards function as honest signals.

Origin of nucleation and growth of extension twins in grains unsuitably oriented for twinning during deformation of Mg-1%Al

A large number of anomalous extension twins,with low or even negative twinning Schmid factors,were found to nucleate and grow in a strongly textured Mg-1Al alloy during tensile deformation along the extruded direction.The deformation mechanisms responsible for this behaviour were investigated through in-situ electron back-scattered diffraction,grain reference orientation deviation,and slip trace-modified lattice rotation.It was found that anomalous extension twins nucleated mainly at the onset of plastic deformation at or near grain boundary triple junctions.They were associated with the severe strain incompatibility between neighbour grains as a result from the differentbasal slip-induced lattice rotations.Moreover,the anomalous twins were able to grow with the applied strain due to the continuous activation ofbasal slip in different neighbour grains,which enhanced the strain incompatibility.These results reveal the complexity of the deformation mechanisms in Mg alloys at the local level when deformed along hard orientations.

Astrocytes, reactive astrogliosis, and glial scar formation in traumatic brain injury

Traumatic brain injury is a global health crisis,causing significant death and disability worldwide.Neuroinflammation that follows traumatic brain injury has serious consequences for neuronal survival and cognitive impairments,with astrocytes involved in this response.Following traumatic brain injury,astrocytes rapidly become reactive,and astrogliosis propagates from the injury core to distant brain regions.Homeostatic astroglial proteins are downregulated near the traumatic brain injury core,while pro-inflammatory astroglial genes are overexpressed.This altered gene expression is considered a pathological remodeling of astrocytes that produces serious consequences for neuronal survival and cognitive recovery.In addition,glial scar formed by reactive astrocytes is initially necessary to limit immune cell infiltration,but in the long term impedes axonal reconnection and functional recovery.Current therapeutic strategies for traumatic brain injury are focused on preventing acute complications.Statins,cannabinoids,progesterone,beta-blockers,and cerebrolysin demonstrate neuroprotective benefits but most of them have not been studied in the context of astrocytes.In this review,we discuss the cell signaling pathways activated in reactive astrocytes following traumatic brain injury and we discuss some of the potential new strategies aimed to modulate astroglial responses in traumatic brain injury,especially using cell-targeted strategies with miRNAs or lncRNA,viral vectors,and repurposed drugs.
