Sulfonylurea receptor(SUR) belongs to the adenosine 5′-triphosphate(ATP)-binding cassette(ABC) transporter family;however,SUR is associated with ion channels and acts as a regulatory subunit determining the opening or closing of the ***8 and Abcc9 genes code for the proteins SUR1 and SUR2,*** SUR1 transcript encodes a protein of 1582 amino acids with a mass around 140–177 k Da expressed in the pancreas,brain,heart,and other *** is well known that SUR1 assembles with Kir6.2 and TRPM4 to establish K_(ATP) channels and non-selective cation channels,***8 and 9 are alternatively spliced,and the resulting transcripts encode different isoforms of SUR1 and SUR2,which have been detected by different experimental ***,the use of binding assays to sulfonylureas and Western blotting has allowed the detection of shorter forms of SUR(-65 k Da).Identity of the SUR1 variants has not been clarified,and some authors have suggested that the shorter forms are ***,immunoprecipitation assays have shown that SUR2 short forms are part of a functional channel even coexisting with the typical forms of the receptor in the *** evidence confirms that the structure of the short forms of the SURs is fully functional and does not lose the ability to interact with the *** structural changes in short forms of SUR modify its affinity to ATP,regulation of its expression might represent an advantage in pathologies where ATP concentrations decrease and a therapeutic target to induce ***,the expression of SUR1 variants might be induced by conditions associated to the decrease of energetic substrates in the brain(*** stroke and epilepsy).In this review,we want to contribute to the knowledge of SUR1 complexity by analyzing evidence that shows the existence of short SUR1 variants and its possible implications in brain function.

The combination of a microbial and a non-microbial biostimulant increases yield in lettuce(Lactuca sativa) under salt stress conditions by up-regulating cytokinin biosynthesis

Salinization poses a significant challenge in agriculture, exacerbated by anthropogenic global warming. Biostimulants, derived from living microorganisms or natural extracts, have emerged as valuable tools for conventional and organic ***, our understanding of the molecular mechanisms underlying the effects of biostimulants is very limited, especially in crops under real cultivation conditions. In this study, we adopted an integrative approach to investigate the effectiveness of the combined application of plant growth-promoting bacterium(Bacillus megaterium strain BM08) and a non-microbial biostimulant under control conditions(normal watering) and salt stress. After confirming the yield increase under both conditions, we investigated the molecular mechanisms underlying the observed effect by measuring a number of physiological parameters(i.e., lipid peroxidation, antioxidants,chlorophylls, total phenolics and phytohormone content), as well as RnA sequencing and primary metabolite analyses. Our findings reveal that the combined effect of the microbial and non-microbial biostimulants led to a decrease in the antioxidant response and an up-regulation of genes involved in cytokinin biosynthesis under salt stress ***, in turn, resulted in a higher concentration of the bioactive cytokinin, isopentenyladenosine, in roots and leaves and an increase in γ-aminobutyric acid, a non-proteic amino acid related to abiotic stress responses. In addition, we observed a decrease in malic acid, along with an abscisic acid(ABA)-independent up-regulation of SR-kinases, a family of protein kinases associated with abiotic stress responses. Furthermore, we observed that the single application of the non-microbial biostimulant triggers an ABA-dependent response under salt stress;however, when combined with the microbial biostimulant, it potentiated the mechanisms triggered by the BM08 bacterial strain. An overview of animal models for investigating the pathogenesis and therapeutic strategies in acute hepatic failure

Acute hepatic failure (AHF) is a severe liver injury accompanied by hepatic encephalopathy which causes multiorgan failure with an extremely high mortality rate, even if intensive care is provided. Management of severe AHF continues to be one of the most challenging problems in clinical medicine. Liver transplantation has been shown to be the most effective therapy, but the procedure is limited by shortage of donor organs. Although a number of clinical trials testing different liver assist devices are under way, these systems alone have no significant effect on patient survival and are only regarded as a useful approach to bridge patients with AHF to liver transplantation. As a result, reproducible experimental animal models resembling the clinical conditions are still needed. The three main approaches used to create an animal model for AHF are: surgical procedures, toxic liver injury and infective procedures. Most common models are based on surgical techniques (total/partial hepatectomy, complete/transient devascularization) or the use of hepatotoxic drugs (acetaminophen, galactosamine, thioacetamide, and others), and very few satisfactory viral models are available. We have recently developed a viral model of AHF by means of the inoculation of rabbits with the virus of rabbit hemorrhagic disease. This model displays biochemical and histological characteristics, and clinical features that resemble those in human AHF. In the present article an overview is given of the most widely used animal models of AHF, and their main advantages and disadvantages are reviewed.

Integrating time progression in ecoimmunology studies: beyond immune response intensity

Habitat alterations in agroecosystems may damage amphibian immune capacity. As agroecosystem extension is increasing worldwide, broader-context knowledge on the effects of agroecosystem stressful conditions on amphibian immune capacity is crucial for understanding and management of amphibian global declines. However, most studies on ecoimmunology assume synchronal amonggroup immune-response peaks, and focus on immune response after standardized time lapses, neglecting its progress!on. Herein, I compared inflamatory response short-term progression of agro ecosystem and n atural-habitat female and male n atterjack toads Epi da lea calamita, by measuri ng swelling response, once per hour, 6 h following an artificial immune challenge with innocuous antigen phytohemagglutinin. I also compared maximum magnitude of swelling response, irrespective of the moment when it was reached. Habitat differences arose only 3 h after challenge, when naturalhabitat toads showed greater swelling response. Maximum magnitude of swelling response was similar in toads from both habitats. However, agroecosystem toads showed a delayed swelling response as compared with natural-habitat conspecifics, probably as a consequenee of agroecosystem stressful conditions. Such a delay suggests a weaker immune capacity, and consequently impaired anti-pathogen performance. Regarding sex, swelling response magnitude did not differ between males and females. Female swelling response peaked earlier, but that of males was more sustai ned in time, which con tradicts general across-taxa fin dings that males show impaired immune response. Interestingly, results suggest that measuring swelling response only after some standardized period following stimulation may be a simplistic approach and produce unrealistic results. Consequently, studies on ecoimmunology should implement swelling response progression in order to produce unbiased science.

Despite lignin nanoparticles (LnPs) being extensively employed as assistant agents to improve the UV-blocking performance of sunscreens, there is a lack of information addressing how and to what extent the chemical and structural features of these particles relate to the improvements observed in the Sun Protection Factors (SPF) of the sunscreens. In this study, lignin oligomers were prepared by a solvothermal extraction process of five typical biomasses in a water–acetone co-solvent without noticeable degradation of the cellulose fraction. Afterward, LnPs were produced from the self-assembly of these lignin oligomers via the solvent-shifting methodology. When incorporated into the sunscreen, these had different morphologies, and exerted different UV-blocking capacities. The effects of the chemical structure and size distribution of the LnPs were systematically studied and compared to those of the original lignin oligomers. LnPs exhibited better UV-blocking ability than soluble lignin oligomers due to the more exposed chromophore on the surface. Besides, compact LnPs with conjugating Cdouble bondO and β-O-4 linkages, as well as the presence of the syringyl unit rich in the methoxyl group in the structures, were beneficial in boosting the UV resistance of the sunscreens. Even though smaller LnPs with higher surface area favored the UV shielding performance, LnPs with widely distributed sizes could further help decrease the UV transmittance. These findings provide an excellent basis for using lignin-derived materials as sunscreen additives and pave the way to developing new environmentally friendly materials for the cosmetic industry.

Triage and Risk Concept: Application Proposal for Pre-Hospital Emergencies in a Psychiatric Ambulance in the City of Buenos Aires

The heterogeneity of clinical presentations in psychiatric emergencies creates difficulties in the response by interdisciplinary Mental Health teams. This is aggravated and difficult when the care is carried out on public roads or the patient’s home, that is, it is a pre-hospital context. Our Psychiatric Emergency Hospital, located in the City of Buenos Aires, provides pre-hospital care with a psychiatric ambulance, which is then referred to general hospitals or other health system providers. not all effectors in the network have the same resources and, at the time of the emergency, the reasons for consultation such as the patient’s clinic are heterogeneous and require the greatest effectiveness in the intervention that is taken. The triage system is a resource that allows the systematization of approaches against the multiplicity of reasons for consultation and presentation of mental pathologies in the emergency room, in addition to providing greater effectiveness in interventions, homogeneity for the health system and consensus among the health effectors. Framed in the Mental Health Law, and especially in the concept of risk, a triage proposal was designed for pre-hospital interventions by the psychiatric ambulance dependent on Hospital Alvear and under current legal regulations with the aim of homogenizing care and referrals with the highest rate of effectiveness to provide quality interdisciplinary medicine.

The chemical transformation of natural oils provides alternatives to limited fossil fuels and produces compounds with added value for the chemical *** selective deoxygenation of natural oils to diesel-ranged hydrocarbons,bio-jet fuels,or fatty alcohols with controllable selectivity is especially attractive in natural oil feedstock *** review presents recent progress in catalytic deoxygenation of natural oils or related model compounds(e.g.,fatty acids)to renewable liquid fuels(green diesel and bio-jet fuels)and valuable fatty alcohols(unsaturated and saturated fatty alcohols).Besides,it discusses and compares the existing and potential strategies to control the product selectivity over heterogeneous *** research conducted and reviewed has only addressed the production of one category;therefore,a new integrative vision exploring how to direct the process toward fuel and/or chemicals is urgently ***,work conducted to date addressing the development of new catalysts and studying the influence of the reaction parameters(e.g.,temperature,time and hydrogen pressure)is summarized and critically discussed from a green and sustainable perspective using efficiency indicators(e.g.,yields,selectivity,turnover frequencies and catalysts lifetime).Special attention has been given to the chemical transformations occurring to identify key descriptors to tune the selectivity toward target products by manipulating the reaction conditions and the structures of the ***,the challenges and future research goals to develop novel and holistic natural oil biorefineries are *** a result,this critical review provides the readership with appropriate information to selectively control the transformation of natural oils into either biofuels and/or value-added *** new flexible vision can help pave the wave to suit the present and future market needs.

Hotspot of Adult Cuban Treefrog and Cane Toad Multi-organ Abnormality in Suburban South-west Florida

This study represents a continuation of the Florida hotspot of tadpole abnormality found in the Southwest Florida suburban roadside drainage ditches in 2012 to determine if the adult frogs and toads frequenting the study sites were anatomically *** gross examination of all organs included 397 adult anurans and 40 metamorphs representing five anuran species:Osteopilus septentrionalis(n=364),Rhinella marina(n=60),Lithobates sphenocephala(n=7),Anaxyrus terrestris(n=5)and Anaxyrus americanus(n=1).The gonads,liver,kidney and intestines were abnormal at a frequency of 87.4%.The few normal anurans(12.6%)were females and young male *** found a significant difference in organ abnormality type and f requency between *** all f rog and toad males had testicular abnormality(92%)with only 6%with normal testes,whereas the female gonad abnormality was lower,at 41.6%.Hermaphroditism was found in both sexes at a frequency of 26.2%.The toads had a significantly higher frequency of hermaphroditism than the *** toad hermaphroditism frequency was found to be 40%,whereas the frog hermaphroditism 23.3%.A hermaphrodite Cane toad male with a female phenotype coexisted with the normal male phenotype *** fertility of 27 in situ pairs was *** fertile testicular abnormal male and hermaphrodite pairs produced offspring with abnormal larval *** information adds new evidence of the effect of chemicals on wild populations and the effect on non-target species which has always been underestimated.

Interaction of Acaena elongata *** Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi under Phosphorus Limitation Conditions in a Temperate Forest

The aim of this study was to analyze the performance of Acaena elongata colonized by arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi(AMF)to different phosphorus(P)concentrations,as a measure of AMF ***,is a species from soils where P availability is limited,such as temperate *** research questions were:1)How do different P concentrations affect the AMF association in Acaena elongata,and 2)How does the AMF association influence ***’s growth under different P concentrations?***’s growth,P content in plant tissue,AMF colonization and dependency were measured under four P concentrations:control(0 g P kg^(-1)),low(0.05 g P kg^(-1)),intermediate(0.2 g P kg^(-1))and high(2 g P kg^(-1))in different harvests.A complete randomized block design was ***’s growth was higher under-AMF in intermediate and high P concentrations,and the lowest growth corresponded to+AMF in the low and intermediate P *** observed a negative effect on the root biomass under+AMF in intermediate P concentration,while the P concentration had a positive effect on the leaf area *** AMF colonization in *** decreased in the highest P concentration and it was favored under intermediate P concentration;while the low and the high concentrations generated a cost-benefit *** results suggest that the performance of some plant species in soils with low P availability may not be favored by their association with AMF,but a synergy between AMF and intermediate P concentrations might drive ***’s growth.

Ceria on alumina support for catalytic pyrolysis of Pavlova sp. microalgae to high-quality bio-oils

In this work,we report for the first time the in-situ catalytic pyrolysis of Pavlova ***,which has been performed in a fixed-bed reactor in presence of Ce/Al2O3-based *** effects of pyrolysis parameters,such as temperature and catalyst were studied on the products yield distribution and biooil composition,among *** showed that all catalysts increased the bio-oil yield with respect to the non-catalytic runs and reduced the O/C ratio from 0.69（Pavlova sp.）to 0.1–0.15,which is close to that of crude *** terms of bio-oil oxygen content,Mg Ce/Al2O3presented the best performance with a reduction of more than 30%,from 14.1 to 9.8 wt%,of the oxygen concentration in comparison with thermal ***,ni Ce/Al2O3gave rise to the highest aliphatics/aromatics *** elemental and gas analysis indicates that n was partially removed from the catalytic bio-oils in the gas phase in forms of nH3and HCn.
