Biosorption characteristics of unicellular green alga Chlorella sorokiniana immobilized in loofa sponge for removal of Cr(Ⅲ)

Loofa sponge （LS） immobilized biomass of Chlorella sorokiniana （LSIBCS）, isolated from industrial wastewater, was investigated as a new biosorbent for the removal of Cr（Ⅲ） from aqueous solution. A comparison of the biosorption of Cr（Ⅲ） by LSIBCS and free biomass of C. sorokiniana （FBCS） from 10-300 mg Cr（Ⅲ）/L aqueous solutions showed an increase in uptake of 17.79% when the microalgal biomass was immobilized onto loofa sponge. Maximum biosorption capacity for LSIBCS and FBCS was found to be 69.26 and 58.80 mg Cr（Ⅲ）/g biosorbent, respectively, whereas the amount of Cr（Ⅲ） ions adsorbed onto naked LS was 4.97 mg/g. The kinetics of Cr（Ⅲ） biosorption was extremely rapid and equilibrium was established in about 15 and 20 min by LSIBCS and FBCS, respectively. The biosorption equilibrium was well defined by Langmuir adsorption isotherm model. The biosorption kinetics followed the pseudo-second order kinetic model. The biosorption was found to be pH dependent and the maximum sorption occurred at the solution pH 4.0. Desorption studies showed that 98% of the adsorbed Cr（Ⅲ） could be desorbed with 0.1 mol/L HNO3, while other desorbing agents were less effective in the order： EDTA 〉 H2SO4 〉 CH3COOH 〉 HCl. The regenerated LSIBCS retained 92.68% of the initial Cr（Ⅲ） binding capacity up to five cycles of reuse in continuous flow-fixed bed columns. The study revealed that LSIBCS could be used as an effective biosorbent for the removal of Cr（Ⅲ） from wastewater.

Effect of Lanthanum on Nodule Count and Nodularity of Ductile Iron

The present study aims at finding out the effect of the addition of a single rare earth element, that is, lanthanum on the nodularity and nodule count of ductile iron under controlled conditions. For this purpose, four melts with different compositions were made, using a 28 kg inductotherm medium frequency induction furnace. The temperature was carefully maintained between 1400 and 1450 ℃ for these heats. A good quality charge consisting of Sorel metal, ferrosilicon, Swedish iron, ferrosilicon magnesium, and ferrosilicon lanthanum was used for the production of melts. A vertically parted sand mould was used for casting of 10 test bars made from local silica sand. Standard coin samples were chill-cast to conduct chemical analysis of the ductile iron. Mierostructure study of the samples was conducted using a Leica optical microscope. Nodule count and nodularity of the samples were carried out using an image analyzer. The results obtained indicated that with the increased addition of lanthanum the nodule count of ductile iron increased, thus making it evident that it played a significant role in increasing the mechanical properties. The highest nodule count of 467 was obtained with the addition of 0.03% lanthanum. However, the effect of lanthanum on nodularity was negligible with nodularity ranging from 81% to 83 %.

Minor alloying plays an important role in the synthesis and improvement of thermal stability of bulk metallic glasses（BMGs）.The present study was conducted to investigate the effect of minor additions of Y,Ti and Nb on the crystallization behavior and the thermal properties of Zr64.5Ni15.5Al11.5Cu8.5 *** parameters and the activation energies for crystallization were calculated for four（Zr0.645Ni0.155Al0.115-Cu0.085）100-xMx（M=Y,Ti and Nb,while x=0,2 at.） *** present alloys have wide supercooled liquid region of ≥87 *** activation energy was found to be greater than 300 kJ/mol for the base *** crystalline phases were identified in the samples annealed at 823 K for 20 *** glass transition temperature（Trg） and other thermal parameters such as γ,δ and β were improved by Y and Ti *** addition resists crystallization below annealing temperature 713 K,however,its effect on thermal properties is not very promising.

Investigation on P-Glycoprotein Function and Its Interacting Proteins under Simulated Microgravity

Distribution,source identification and risk assessment of selected metals in sediments from freshwater lake

This study is based on the assessment of distribution,source apportionment and risk assessment of selected metals in freshly deposited sediments from freshwater lake,*** sediments were collected and processed to assess Ca（NO3）2-extractable and acid-extractable levels of the metals in the sediments using flame atomic absorption *** factors（EF）,geoaccumulation indices(Igeo),contamination factors（C_f） and degree of contamination(Cdeg) were computed to estimate the degree of *** potential ecological risk was assessed using sediment quality guidelines and mean-ERM-quotient（m-ERM-Q）.On the average basis,acid-extractable metals followed the decreasing concentration order:Ca>Mg>Fe>K>Mn>Na>Sr>Zn>Pb>Cr>Co>Cu>-Li>Cd,whereas,the Ca（NO3）2-extractable levels were:Na>Ph>Cd>Sr>Co>Cr>K>Mg>-Cu>Zn>Li>Ca>Fe>*** highest Ca（NO3）2extractable concentrations were observed for Na,Pb and Cd,while that of Ca,Fe and Mn were the *** showed very high and extremely high enrichment of Pb and Cd,respectively,while Ca,Co,Cr,Li,Mg,Mn,Sr and Zn manifested moderate enrichment:the Igeoresults revealed moderate to strong and strong to extreme pollution for Pb and Cd,respectively;and the C_f study showed moderate,considerable and very high contamination by Co,Pb and Cd,*** Cdegrevealed very high degree of contamination in the sediments as a *** component analysis（PCA） and cluster analysis（CA） showed considerable anthropogenic contributions of Cd,Pb,Co,Mn,K,Zn and Li in the *** levels of Cd and Pb exceeded ERL values,manifesting occasional adverse biological effects to the dwelling ***,the mERM-Q study manifested 21%probability of toxicity in the sediments.

Characteristics of mountain glacier surge hazard: learning from a surge event in NE Pamir, China

Structural, morphological, Raman, optical, magnetic, and antibacterial characteristics of CeO2 nanostructures

In this study, CeO2 nanostructures were synthesized by a soft chemical method. A hydrothermal treatment was observed to lead to an interesting morphological transformation of the nanoparticles into homogeneous microspheres composed of nanosheets with an average thickness of 40 nm. Structural analysis revealed the formation of a single-phase cubic fluorite structure of CeO2 for both samples. A Raman spectroscopic study confirmed the XRD results and furthermore indicated the presence of a large number of oxygen vacancies in the nanosheets. These oxygen vacancies led to room-temperature ferromagnetism （RTFM） of the CeO2 nanosheets with enhanced magnetic characteristics. Amazingly, the nanosheets exhibited substantially greater antibacterial activity than the nanoparticles. This greater antibacte- rial activity was attributed to greater exposure of high-surface-energy polar surfaces and to the presence of oxygen vacancies.

Failure Mechanism and Stability Analysis of an Active Landslide in the Xiangjiaba Reservoir Area,Southwest China

Dam construction for hydropower development is a very important subject all around the world, especially in developing countries due to energy crises. Filling of reservoir lakes may trigger or reactivate landslides in reservoir area. Active landslides in populated districts in the Xiangjiaba Reservoir area have become a striking problem for residents, local government and construction engineers. The key objective of this study is to analyze the role of reservoir filling and fluctuation in the activation/reactivation of the landslide as well as the mechanism of landslide from microstructures of pre-sheared slip surface. A large active landslide with a total volume of 1.25 Mm^3 at the left margin of Jinsha River in Pingshan County of Sichuan Province, Southwest China, was selected as a case study. Field investigation, field monitoring and laboratory tests were carried out to find out the failure mechanism and the stability of the active landslide. The shear strength test and stability analysis confirm that the water level fluctuations have an adverse effect on slope stability. It is obvious from microstructure analysis that the clay minerals contribute to down-slope movement at micro-scale as well as presence of expansive minerals （e.g., montmorillonite） decreases the strength of soil due to water level rise.
