Study on relationship between acute gastrointestinal disease and Helicobacter pylori infections

Objective: To assess the relation between acute gastrointestinal disease and Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infections. Methods: Over the 18-month period, a total of 323 patients referred to three hospitals in Babol (north of Iran) were enrolled in this cross-sectional study. H. pylori status (rapid urease test), endoscopic findings in the patients, personal habits (smoking or alcohol intake) and administration of drugs, such as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) were analyzed using standard Chi-square test and multinomial logistic regression analysis. Results: Results showed that acute gastric ulcer patients had a significant association with alcohol (P=0.001, OR=6.183), opium (P=0.022, OR=2.823), smoking (P=0.016, OR=2.579) and NSAIDs (P=0.046, OR=2.071). However, patients with in acute duodenal ulcer have a significant association with opium (P=0.023, OR=2.326) and alcohol (P=0.003, OR=3.888). As well as, gastric cancer had significant association with alcohol (P<0.05, OR=6.937), smoking (P=0.012, OR=2.738), family history (P=0.005, OR=4.380) and gender (P≤0.05, OR=5.103). Conclusions: Current investigation shows that H. pylori infection, alcoholism, male gender, age and family history have an additive impact on the incidence of gastric cancer. In addition, alcoholism, opium usage, NSAIDs and family history have more impact on the incidence of acute gastric ulcer and acute duodenal ulcer in patients.

Background: Bloating is a common gastrointestinal complaint which is difficult to ***: This study investigated the efficacy and compliance of a formulation called KAASER comprised of Trachyspermum ammi(L.) Sprague seed, Zingiber officinale Roscoe. rhizome and Piper nigrum L. berry in the treatment of functional ***, setting, participants and intervention: A total of 106 patients with functional bloating, between20 and 50 years of age, participated in this double-blind randomized controlled trial. Patients were divided into 3 parallel groups that received 500 mg of placebo, dimethicone or KAASER, three times a day for 2 *** outcome measures: The frequency and severity of bloating were primary outcomes, while the frequencies of eructation, defecation, borborygmus and early satiation were secondary outcomes. All parameters were evaluated at the beginning(week 0), and also weeks 2, 4 and 10 of the study, through self-report checklists with a scoring ***: Among the 84 patients who completed the study, the frequency and severity of bloating(P < 0.001), the frequencies of eructation, defecation and borborygmus(P = 0.03) were significantly improved in the group receiving KAASER(36 patients) compared with the dimethicone(35 patients)and placebo(35 patients) groups, during the 3 phases of follow-up. These significant differences persisted through the 2 and 8 weeks of follow-ups after cessation of medication(week 4 and 10). In early satiation,no significant differences were observed among the 3 ***: The results showed that KAASER can be effectively used to treat patients suffering from bloating. Bloating, eructation, defecation and borborygmus in the KAASER group remained significantly improved after 2 and 8 weeks of cessation of medication, making this mechanism an interesting area for further *** registration: Registration trial IRCT2015100324327 N on Iranian Registry of Clinical Trials.

Objective: To evaluate the effect of doxorubicin and its pegylated liposomal formulation(Doxil, Caelyx) on in vitro susceptibility of promastigote and amastigote stages of Leishmania major. Methods: Throughout in vitro assays the IC50 was calculated in the promastigotes and amastigotes forms in J774 macrophage cell line. Also as cytotoxicity in J774 cell line macrophages. Results: Doxorubicin and Doxil showed the same activity against promastigote form with IC50 values of 10.49 μg/m L and 9.63 μg/m L, respectively. Similarly, the amastigote stage was susceptible at concentration of at least 1 μg/m L when compared to positive control(P<0.000 1). Also, cytotoxicity assay against macrophage revealed no toxicity on the host cells at IC50 concentrations. Conclusions: Our findings demonstrated the efficacy of both doxorubicin and its pegylated liposomal formulation on Leishmania major at low concentrations. Further researches are needed for evaluating the safety of drugs in animal model particularly as topical formulation.
