Tight near-total corrosive strictures of the proximal esophagus with concomitant involvement of the hypopharynx: Flexible endoscopic management using a novel technique

AIM To investigate the role of a novel minimally invasive endoscopic technique in the management of tight neartotal corrosive strictures of the proximal esophagus involving the *** Two patients with near-total corrosive strictures of the proximal esophagus involving the hypopharynx were managed with the novel endoscopic technique. The technique involved passing a 0.025-inch flexible guidewire across the stricture, and stricture dilatation, using 10 F coaxial diathermy and balloon dilators, followed byelectro-incision of the proximal aspect of the residual eccentric stricture by means of a novel approach using a wire-guided *** Both patients were successfully managed on an outpatient department basis with the complete relief of symptoms and resolution of strictures on endoscopy and an esophagogram. No adverse events were seen during or after the procedure. There was no recurrence of symptoms at a follow-up of over a year in both cases. There was a significant improvement in the body mass index of both patients after the *** We report a novel flexible endoscopic technique for the management of complex hypopharyngo-esophageal strictures. In experienced hands, the procedure is relatively simple, safe and effective with a durable response.

Adsorption in combination with ozonation for the treatment of textile waste water： a critical review

Intrusion of synthetic textile dyes in the ecosystem has been recognized as a serious issue worldwide. The effluents generated from textiles contain large amount of recalcitrant unfixed dyes which are regarded as emerging contaminants in the field of waste water study. Removal of various toxic dyes often includes diverse and complex set of physico-chemical, biological and advanced oxidation processes adopted for treatment. Adsorption in itself is a well-known technique utilized for treatment of textile effluents using a variety of adsorbents. In addition, ozonation deals with effective removal of dyes using high oxidising power of ozone. The review summarizes dye removal study by a combination of ozonation and adsorption methods. Also, to acquire an effective interpretation of this combined approach of treating wastewater, a thorough study has been made which is deliberated here. Results assert that, with the combined ability of ozone and a catalyst/adsorbent, there is high possibility of total elimination of dyes from waste water. Several synthetically prepared materials have been used along with few natural materials during the combined treatment. However, considering practical applicability, some areas were identified during the study where work needs to be done for effective implementation of the combined treatment.

Study on changes in bed characteristics and friction factor in the presence of wash load in suspension

The modified magnetodielectric response in KNN-CZFMO based particulate multiferroic composite system

Lead-free multiferroic composites of 1−x(K_(0.5)Na_(0.5)NbO_(3−x))(Co_(0.6)Zn_(0.4))(Fe_(1.7)Mn_(0.3))O_(4)(KNN-CZFMO),where x=0.0,0.1,0.2,0.3,0.4,0.5 and 1.0,have been investigated for their structural,morphological,electrical,magnetic,dielectric and magneto-dielectric *** of KNN and CZFMO crystal structure in each composite has been confirmed from X-ray diffrac-tion analysis(XRD).Cuboidal-shaped grains of KNN and spherical-shaped grains of CZFMO have been observed by scanning electron microscopy(SEM).The room temperature ferroelectric behavior as confirmed by polarization versus electric field(P-E)hysteresis loops has been found to be decreasing with increasing CZFMO *** magnetic ordering with the increase in CZFMO concentration in the prepared composites has been observed by magnetization versus magnetic field(M-H)hysteresis *** electrical conductivity of composites has been studied using Jonscher’s universal power *** room temperature dielectric constant(ε′)and dielectric loss(tanδ)have been observed to decrease with the increase in the frequency of the applied external electric *** dielectric relaxation behavior has been observed using curve fitting analysis via the Havriliak-Negami relaxation *** value of the magnetodielectric(MD)effect~−11%at a frequency of 1 kHz with the applied magnetic field of 1 T has been achieved for 0.9 KNN−0.1 CZFMO(x=0.1)composite in the present research work.

Expression patterns of WT-1 and Bcr-Abl measured by TaqMan quantitative real-time RT-PCR during follow-up of leukemia patients with the Ph chromosome

Background This study was designed to quantitatively measure WT-1 expression levels in patients with chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML) and acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) during follow-up and to clarify the value of WT-1 as a molecular marker in minimal residual disease *** The TaqMan quantitative real-time RT-PCR method was established by using cloned WT-1 cDNA or synthesized oligonucleotides resembling WT-1 cDNA fragments in limit dilution as template until a stable and reliable standard curve was obtained. In a 25-month follow-up, the transcriptional levels of WT-1, Bcr-Abl, and Abl gene, were quantitatively measured in bone marrow cells from 25 CML or acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) patients with the Ph chromosome. In addition, the expression of these genes in 40 samples of normal peripheral blood was also examined using the same method. The ratios of WT-1/Abl and Bcr-Abl/Abl were both plotted, and the two expression patterns were compared as well as their clinical *** The levels of WT-1 expression in normal peripheral blood were detectable. In CML and Ph positive ALL patients, WT-1 expression levels changed in parallel with the Bcr-Abl expression pattern as the disease progressed or responded to effective *** WT-1 expression provides a novel molecular marker in addition to Bcr-Abl for monitoring minimal residual disease (MRD) and targeting therapy in Ph chromosome-positive leukemia patients.

Effect of Chronic Supplementation of Branched Chain Amino Acids on Exercise-Induced Muscle Damage in Trained Athletes

PURPOSE： Branched Chain Amino Acids （BCAA） has been considered an important nutritional strategy to improve skeletal muscle protein turnover in many conditions especially following exercise induced muscle damage. Exercise induced muscle damage （EIMD）, a phenomenon impairs muscle function and hampers athletic performance. The effects of consumption of BCAA for a chronic period （4 weeks） on EIMD in trained athletic population have never been explored. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to examine the effects of chronic consumption （4 weeks） of BCAA on indices of muscle damage elicited via a bout of damaging exercise in trained athletes. METHODS： Twenty trained males （20 road cyclists） aged 18-28 years were randomly assigned to two groups （BCAA and Placebo）（n = 10）. The damaging exercise consisted of 100 consecutive drop-jumps. Biochemical markers including creatine kinase （CK）, high sensitivity c reactive protein （hs-cRP） and myeloperoxidase （MPO）, isometric knee muscle strength, muscle soreness, aerobic capacity （WO2max） and heart rate （HR） were measured. RESULTS： Differences were observed in pre-and post-supplementation periods among all the participants with mean height and weight values of 168.57 （4.5） cm and 61.74 （4.55） kg respectively as calculated by the anthropologist randomly allocated to the two groups in all tested parameters indicating the effectiveness of BCAA in attenuating muscle damage and enhancing muscle recovery with chronic consumption when compared to placebo, however in contrast to our expectations based on symptoms and our clinical judgment during the study statistically significant difference （P 〈 0.05） were noticed with biochemical indices only. CONCLUSION： Our findings suggest that chronic BCAA supplementation proved to be an effective meansof reducing muscle damage, enhancing muscle protein synthesis and recovery following EIMD as compared to placebo in well trained athletic population.
