Potential of using forest residue to offset coal use in co-fired coal power plants in the eastern United States

The global transition from fossil fuel-based energy sources to renewable energy sources will be most effective,for at least the near future,by utilizing local resources and existing *** many areas of the eastern United States,forest residue is abundant and can be used in existing facilities to supplement coal in coal-fired power *** forest residue has potential as a renewable energy source that could be effectively utilized in the near *** study uses GIS to estimate the potential quantity of forest residue available for use in coal-fired power plants in the eastern United *** costs limit the distance over which it is feasible to transport forest residue to the power plants and these costs may fluctuate depending on economic ***,we consider three scenarios in our analysis assuming the maximum feasible transport distances to be 60,80,and 100 *** the eastern U.S.,the total annual forest residue available to coal plants is approximately 29.4,40.2,and 48.2 million dry tons,respectively,for maximum transport distances of 60,80,and 100 *** an 80 km transport distance,forest residue has the potential to reduce coal consumption by 22.3 million tons per *** this scenario,greenhouse gas emissions would be reduced by almost 58.1 million tons per year,and NOx and SOx emissions would be reduced by 69.3 and 122.6 thousand tons *** analysis suggests that by offsetting coal use,forest residue has the potential to substantially reduce power plant emissions.

Pseudoaneurysm after abdominal myomectomy: A rare but catastrophic complication

Background: Uterine artery pseudoaneurysm is a rare diagnosis made postoperatively after pelvic surgery. The exact etiology is unknown however it is speculated to occur when an artery is lacerated and the perivascular tissue maintains persistent blood flow with the parent vessel. It can present with severe hemorrhage two to four weeks after an uncomplicated post operative course. Case: A 45 year old presented with vaginal hemorrhage and hypotension two weeks after abdominal myomectomy. Transvaginal ultrasound with doppler diagnosed pseudoaneurysm of the uterine artery. The patient was successfully treated with endovascular embolization utilizing micro coils. Conclusion: Transvaginal ultrasound is a useful technique in diagnosing pseudoaneurysms. Endovascular embolization is a minimally invasive, safe and effective way to treat this rare complication in institutions that have access to interventional radiology procedures.

Point mutation in regulatory region of msrA gene contributes to the telithromycin resistance induced by erythromycin in Staphylococcus aureus

msrA encodes an efflux protein in Staphylococcus *** confers inducible resistance to macrolides,such as erythromycin(ERY),but not telithromycin(TEL).Thus,msrA+*** remain susceptible to *** of msrAis regulated by a 320-bp upstream region,presumably by translational attenuation,similar to regulation of *** investigated whether ERY could induce TEL resistance in msrA+*** of ERY and TEL were determined by broth microdilution(BMD).Inducible TEL resistance was detected by a BMD checkerboard panel containing combinations of ERY and TEL and by a D-test where an ERY disk was placed 15mm from a TEL disk on a blood agar *** of the TEL zones of inhibition proximal to the ERY disk indicated inducible resistance and no blunting indicated no inducible *** 400bp of the upstream regulatory region and 200bp of msrA were amplified by PCR and *** TEL MICs for 10 msrA+isolates ranged from 0.06-2g/mL(MIC90=0.25g/mL);ERY MICs were all≥32g/*** isolates showed an increase in TEL MICs of>2doubling dilutions(MIC90>4g/mL)in the presence of ERY;All were also positive by *** 9isolates(initial TEL MICparent ***,six isolates had a G to T mutation at position-222;one had a C to A mutation at-228;And one had a C to A mutation *** of the msrAgene with above point mutation in regulatory region into *** RN4220conferred the strain resistant(MIC=8g/mL)to the telithromycin while transformants with the wild-type msrAgene remained susceptible(MIC=1g/mL)to telithromycin.
