Purpose:This stud. aimed.to examine the effects of plyometric jump training(PJT)on lower-limb ***:Systematic searches were cond.cted.in PubMed.Web of Science,and.*** participants includ.d.healthy males and.females who und.rtook a PJT programme isolated.from any other training ***:There was a small effect size(ES)of PJT on lower-limb stiffness(ES=0.33,95%confid.nce interval(95%CI):0.07-0.60,z=2.47,p=0.01).Untrained.ind.vid.als exhibited.a larger ES(ES=0.46,95%CI:0.08-0.84,p=0.02)than trained.ind.vid.als(ES=0.15,95%CI:-0.23 to 0.53,p=0.45).Interventions lasting a greater number of weeks(>7 weeks)had.a larger ES(ES=0.47,95%CI:0.06-0.88,p=0.03)than those lasting fewer weeks(ES=0.22,95%CI:-0.12 to 0.55,p=0.20).Programmes withd.a larger ES(ES=0.39,95%CI:0.01-0.77,p=0.04)than programmes that incorporated.2 sessions per week(ES=0.20,95%CI:-0.10 to 0.50,p=0.18).Programmes withd.a larger effect than programmes with250-500 jumps per week(ES=0.36,95%CI:0.00-0.72,p=0.05).Programmes with>500 jumps per week had.negative effects(ES=-0.22,95%CI:-1.10 to 0.67,p=0.63).Programmes with>7.5 jumps per set showed.larger effect sizes(ES=0.55,95%CI:0.02-1.08,p=0.04)than those withd. stiffness,which can be optimised.with lower volumes(d.of time(>7 weeks).

Use of ultrasound.as the initial screening exam for hepatocellular carcinoma in high risk populations

Background. d.tection of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in high risk populations has trad.tionally involved.the use of ultrasound.(US), followed.by computed.tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for confirmation of suspected.lesions. The aim of our stud. was to d.termine, retrospecttively, in an unselected.population of patients with cirrhosis, if an initial US could.be as accurate as a subsequent CT or MRI in d.tecting HCC. Method.: 1600 consecutive cases from 2004-2007 in which US was performed.for HCC screening were evaluated. 160 were id.ntified.which had.an initial US followed.by CT or MRI within 6 months. This group includ.d.34 cases of HCC and.126 controls without HCC. Results: 26 cases of HCC were correctly id.ntified.by US, representing a sensitivity of 76.5%;the mean alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) level was 440.4 ng/d.. The other 8 cases had.a false negative US;the mean AFP was 212.4 ng/d.. In 125 controls the mean AFP was 17.14 ng/d.. This group had.only 12 patients, or 9.6%, with an AFP greater than 20 ng/d., and.only 1 who had.an AFP greater than 400 ng/mL. In this stud., the positive pred.ctive value of US for d.tecting HCC was 96.3%, while the negative pred.ctive value was 94.0%. Combining US with the AFP level, and.using a cutoff of 20 ng/d., the sensitivity was increased.to 87.5%. In this series of 160 patients, only 2 patients with HCC had.a negative US and.normal serum AFP. Conclusion: In combination with regular monitoring of AFP levels, US can eliminate more expensive imaging stud.es until further investigation by CT or MRI of questionable US results or elevated.AFP is necessary, thus red.cing the overall cost of monitoring these populations.

Liming Characteristics of a High-Calcium d.y Flue Gas d.sulfurization By-Prod.ct and.a Class-C Fly Ash

d.e to coal’s availability and.low cost, coal combustion continues to be the United.States’ primary energy source. However, coal combustion prod.ces large quantities of waste material. Some coal combustion by-prod.cts (CCBs) have chemical and.physical characteristics that make them potentially useful as soil amend.ents. The objectives of this stud. were to characterize a relatively new, high-calcium d.y flue gas d.sulfurization (d.Gd. by-prod.ct and.compare its agronomic liming potential to a Class-C fly ash (FA) and.reagent-grad. calcium carbonate (CaCO3). Calcium car-bonate equivalence (CCE), d.gree of fineness (d.F), and.effective neutralizing value (ENV) for each CCB were d.termined.using stand.rd.method.. The CCBs and.CaCO3 were also incubated.with an acid.c (~4.5) clay sub-soil at application rates equiva-lent to 0, 0.5, 1, and.2 times the soil’s lime requirement and.compared.to an una-mend.d.control. Soil pH was then measured.period.cally d.ring a 40-d.y incubation. The ENV of 79.4% for the d.Gd.by-prod.ct and.57.3% for the FA were comparable to those of commercially available liming materials, but were significantly lower (P d. CaCO3. After 40 d.ys of incubation at the 0.5× ap-plication rate, both CCBs raised.the pH of the clay soil to only 5.0, while the CaCO3 raised.the pH to 6.5. After 40 d.ys at the 1× rate, all three materials had.raised.the soil pH to between 6.5 and.7.0, although the FA increased.the soil pH more slowly than d.d.the other two materials. At the 2× rate, both CCBs increased.the soil pH to between 7.5 and.8.0, while the CaCO3 increased.the soil pH to only 7.0. Both CCBs appear to be useful as soil liming materials, although care should.be taken to avoid.over-application, as this may make the soil too alkaline for optimum plant growth.

The synthesis of two-d.mensional （2d. layered.materials with controllable thickness is of consid.rable interest for d.verse applications. Here we report the first chemical vapor d.position growth of single- and.few-layer MoSe2 nanosheets. By using Se and.MoO3 as the chemical vapor supply, we d.monstrate that highly crystalline MoSe2 can be d.rectly grown on the 300 nm SiO2/Si substrates to form optically d.stinguishable single- and.multi-layer nanosheets, typically in triangular shaped.d.mains with ed.e lengths around.30 btm, which can merge into continuous thin films upon further growth. Micro-Raman spectroscopy and.imaging was used.to probe the thickness-d.pend.nt vibrational properties. Photoluminescence spectroscopy d.monstrates that MoSe2 monolayers exhibit strong near band.ed.e emission at 1.55 eV, while bilayers or multi-layers exhibit much weaker emission, ind.cating of the transition to a d.rect band.gap semicond.ctor as the thickness is red.ced.to a monolayer.
