An Ensemble Kalman Filter(EnKF)-based assimilation algorithm was implemented to estimate root-zone soil moisture(RZSM)using a Soil-Vegetation-Atmosphere Transfer(SVAT)model during a complete growing season of corn in Central *** and field soil moisture(SM)observations and NASA SMAP SM retrievals were used to understand the effect of vertically spatial updates and uncertainties in meteorological forcings on RZSM *** of RZSM every 3 days using SM observations at 4 depths lowered the averaged standard deviation(ASD)and the root mean square error(RMSE)by 60%and 50%,respectively,compared to the open-loop *** assimilation of synthetic SM at the top 0-5 cm obtained RZSM closer to observations compared to THEXMEX-18 SM measurements and SMAP SM *** between EnKF estimates and SM observations and SMAP SM retrievals are mainly due to misrepresentation of vegetation *** results improved SM estimates up to 10-cm depth using SMAP SM retrievals;however,additional studies are needed to improve SM at deeper *** implemented methodology can estimate SM at the top 10 cm of the soil every 3 days to mitigate the impact of the climate change on agricultural production over rainfed areas,particularly in developing countries.

SOCS3 dictates the transition of divergent time-phased events in granulocyte TNF-a signaling

Tumor-necrosis factor-a （TNF-a）-driven nuclear factor-KB （NF-KB） activation and apoptosis are opposing pathways; the growing recognition of these conflicting roles of TNF-a is perplexing. Here, we show that inflammation and apoptosis are time-phased events following TNF-a signaling and that emergence of suppressor of cytokine signaling 3 （SOCS3） expression limits the ongoing NF-KB activation and promotes apoptosis; further, we suggest an altered view of how inflammatory diseases are initiated and sustained. In vitro, TNF-a （50 ng/ml） induced granulocyte SOCS3 protein, inhibited nuclear accumulation of the p65NF-KB subunit and enhanced apoptosis, as shown by DNA laddering, annexin V positivity, and overexpression of caspase-3 and Bax in the late phase, whereas the early phase was marked by NF-KB activation. Conversely, SOCS3 knockdown by small interfering RNA （siRNA） inhibited granulocyte apoptosis and enhanced nuclear accumulation of p65 and 5＇ lipooxygenase expression in the late phase of TNF-a signaling. As apoptosis is associated with SOCS3 abundance, we suggest that these divergent TNF-a-driven events are time-phased, interconnected, opposing control mechanisms and one of the central features through which the immune system resolves pulmonary inflammation. Dysregulation may initiate mucosal inflammation, thus changing the landscape of asthma theraov.

Optimization of CMOS Repeater Driven Interconnect RC Line Using Genetic Algorithm

In this work, optimization of complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) repeater driven interconnect resistive-capacitive (RC) line is carried out using genetic algorithm (GA). This work is aimed at powerdelay- product (PDP) minimization of RC interconnect at 180 nm technology node. The algorithm simultaneously optimizes the values of supply voltage, number of repeaters and repeater width for delay and PDP minimization. The accuracy of results obtained is verified by simulations from Cadence virtuoso tool. For delay minimization, comparison of GA results with previous results of the literature shows an improvement of 44.4% in the value of the optimal number of repeaters required. This improvement is obtained by increasing the repeater size, which also increases power dissipation, so a tradeoff has also been achieved in terms of PDP minimization. The comparison of PDP results obtained in this work, with the results at 70, 100, and 130 nm technologies from literature shows improvement in optimal number of repeaters required. The results of algorithm and simulations are in good agreement and demonstrate the validity of proposed algorithm. © 2017, Shanghai Jiaotong University and Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

Effect of best management practice implementation on sediment and phosphorus load reductions at subwatershed and watershed scale using SWAT model

Identification of areas contributing disproportionately high amount of pollutants(i.e.,critical source areas(CSAs)) to streams is important to efficiently and effectively target best management practices(BMPs).Process-based models are commonly used to identify CSAs and evaluate the impact of alternative management practices on pollutant load *** objective of this study was to use the Soil and Watershed Assessment Tool(SWAT) to identify CSAs at the subwatershed level and evaluate the impact of alternative BMPs on sediment and total phosphorus(TP) load reductions in the Pleasant Valley watershed(50 km~2) in South Central Wisconsin(USA).The Nash-Sutcliffe efficiency,percent bias,and coefficient of determination ranged from 0.58 to 0.71,-12.87 to 38.33,and 0.67 to 0.79,respectively,indicating that SWAT was able to predict stream flow,sediment and TP loadings at a monthly time-step with sufficient *** on the SWAT simulation results,annual average(2006-2012) subwatershed yield for sediment and TP ranged from 0.06 to 3.14 tons hayrand 0.04 to1.9 kg hayr,*** croplands were the major source ofsediment and TP in this watershed(> 84%).Reduction in sediment and TP loading ranged from 66%to 99%at the subwatershed level after conversion of croplands to Conservation Reserve Program(CRP) grasslands in subwatersheds identified as *** the other hand,reduction in sediment and TP loading with implementation of no-till practices ranged from only 14%to 25%.At the watershed outlet,sediment and TP loading reduction was< 15%after conversion of croplands to CRP grasslands and implementation of no-till practices because only about 8%of the watershed area was targeted for BMPs and/or resuspension of sediment deposited on the stream bed masked the downstream improvements in water quality.

An exploratory pilot of factors associated with premenstrual syndrome in minority women

Purpose:This investigation explored factors associated with premenstrual syndrome(PMS)in minority women,and compared the response of minority and non-minority women supplemented with omega-3 fatty acids(FA)in the form of fish ***:This descriptive,correlational,retrospective pilot was a secondary data *** consuming 2 g of fish oil/d(n=15)in the larger study were *** Moos Menstrual Distress Questionnaire(MMDQ)was assessed monthly for two months to acquire a mean baseline MMDQ *** total sample was stratified to evaluate racial variations in PMS symptoms(non-minority,n=7;minority,n=8).MMDQ score at 5 months was compared to the mean baseline score within each ***:Fish oil supplementation significantly reduced PMS symptoms in both groups(nonminority p=0.002;minority p=0.046)with a large effect of 1.4 for both *** MMDQ total scores were not significantly different between groups at 5 ***:This pilot evidence of improved PMS symptoms in minority and non-minority groups related to fish oil supplementation supports a universal treatment approach and highlights need for a larger-scale investigation.

Influence of student attributes on readiness for interprofessional learning across multiple healthcare disciplines:Identifying factors to inform educational development

This investigation evaluated if individual student attributes have a predictive impact on readiness for interprofessional education(IPE).An exploratory analysis was conducted with 311 students from dental medicine,dietetics,medicine,nursing,pharmacy and physical ***,gender,age,academic standing,amount of clinical exposure in academic program and number of years worked in a patient care setting were evaluated as predictors of readiness for IPE using the Readiness for Interprofessional Learning Scale(RIPLS).Medical students had significantly lower RIPLS scores compared to pharmacy(p=0.010)and dietetics students(p=0.022).Male gender(p=0.005)was a single independent predictor of IPE readiness.A higher number of years of practice had a significant interaction predictive of readiness for IPE(p=0.028).Identification of factors influencing readiness for IPE are key to developing teaching and learning strategies targeted to improve teamwork,quality of care and patient *** this investigation,men with more years of practice was highly predictive of a lower RIPLS *** upon our findings,educational planning targeting male medical students with a higher number of years of practice would be a reasonable evidence-based step toward improving the value of IPE programs and *** work is necessary in developing focus groups,simulation and case-based exercises to influence attitudes and readiness for IPE.

Electrochemical Behavior of Alumix 321 PM and AA6061 Alloys in 3.5 wt% NaCl Solution by Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy Measurements

Powder metallurgy (PM) is a very interesting metal manufacturing technique in the production of automotive components of a net or near net shape. In this research, the electrochemical corrosion behavior of a commercially available aluminum powder alloy known as Alumix 321 was investigated and compared to wrought alloy AA6061 in 3.5 wt% NaCl solution using Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy Measurements (EIS). Alumix 321 alloy samples were prepared by pressing the powder at pressures ranging from 50 to 500 MPa and subsequently sintering them for 30 min at 630°C. It was found that the presence of pores and their morphology strongly affect the corrosion behavior the PM samples.

Holographic Deformation Measurement by a Spatial Carrier Fringe Technique

A carrier fringe techrtique for measuring surface deformation is described and verified by experiments. In contrast to conventional holography and fringe analysis, this holographic system is based on fibre optics and automatic spatial carrier fringe pattem analysis techniques Single-mode optic fibres are used to transfer both the object and reference beams. Carrier fringes are generated by simply translating the object beam between two exposures The Fourier transform is applied to the carrier fringe pattern to convert it to the spatial frequency domain, where it is processed The results are given for a centrally loaded disk, including a 3-D perspective plot of the out of plane deformation field, phase map, grey level map and contour map.

It is with particular satisfaction that I accede to the invitation to write this Preface to Dr. Gu Shengkai＇s book ＂International Human Rights Law： Inter-American Theory and Prac-tice＂. I first met Dr. Gu Shengkai at the University of Nottingham, United Kingdora, on 09 December 2002, when I there delivered a public lecture, at the Human Rights Law Centre of its School of Law, on ＂Recent Developments in the Case- Law of the Inter-American Court of Human Rights＂. Ever since his successful completion at that University, Dr. Gu Shengkai pursued patiently his line of research on the subject-matter of his present book. The outcome of his research, his present book, gives testimony of all his endeavours in examining the subject in a proper perspective.
