a. government a.encies continue to tighten emissions regula.ions due to the continued increa.e in greenhouse ga. production, a.tomotive industries a.e seeking to produce increa.ingly efficient vehicle technology. Hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) ha.e been introduced to mitiga.e problems while improving fuel economy. HEVs ha.e led to the dema.d of crea.ing more a.va.ced controls softwa.e to consider multiple components for propulsive power in a.vehicle. a.la.ge section in the softwa.e development process is the implementa.ion of a. optima. energy ma.a.ement stra.egy mea.t to improve the overa.l fuel efficiency of the vehicle. Optima. stra.egies ca. be implemented when driving conditions a.e known a.prior. The Equiva.ent Consumption Minimiza.ion Stra.egy (ECMS) is a. optima. control stra.egy tha. uses a. equiva.ence fa.tor to equa.e electrica. to mecha.ica. power when performing torque split determina.ion between the interna. combustion engine a.d electric motor for propulsive a.d regenera.ive torque. This equiva.ence fa.tor is determined from offline vehicle simula.ions using a.sensitivity a.a.ysis to provide optima. fuel economy results while ma.nta.ning predetermined high volta.e ba.tery sta.e of cha.ge (SOC) constra.nts. When the control hiera.chy is modified or different driving styles a.e a.plied, the a.a.ysis must be redone to upda.e the equiva.ence fa.tor. The goa. of this work is to implement a.fuzzy logic controller tha. dyna.ica.ly upda.es the equiva.ence fa.tor to improve fuel economy, ma.nta.n a.strict cha.ge susta.ning window of opera.ion for the high volta.e ba.tery, a.d reduce computa.iona. time required during a.gorithm development. The a.a.tive a.gorithm is va.ida.ed a.a.nst globa. optimum fuel economy a.d cha.ge susta.ning results from a.sensitivity a.a.ysis performed for multiple drive cycles. The goa. of this work is to develop a.hybrid electric vehicle model tha. is suita.le for use in a.dyna.ic progra.ming a.gorithm tha. provides the benchma.k for optima. control of the hybrid powertra.n. The benchma.k a.a.ysis employs dyna.ic progra.ming by ba.kwa.d induction to determine the globa.ly optima. solution by solving the energy ma.a.ement problem sta.ting a. the fina. timestep a.d proceeding ba.kwa.ds in time. This method requires the development of a.ba.kwa.ds fa.ing model tha. propa.a.es the wheel speed of the vehicle for the given drive cycle through the driveline components to determine the opera.ing points of the powertra.n. a.though dyna.ic progra.ming only sea.ches the solution spa.e within the fea.ible regions of opera.ion, the benchma.king model must be solved for every a.missible sta.e a. every timestep lea.ing to strict requirements for runtime a.d memory. The ba.kwa.d fa.ing model employs the qua.i-sta.ic a.sumption of powertra.n opera.ion to reduce the fidelity of the model to a.commoda.e these requirements. Verifica.ion a.d va.ida.ion testing of the dyna.ic progra.ming a.gorithm is conducted to ensure successful opera.ion of the a.gorithm a.d to a.sess the va.idity of the determined control policy a.a.nst a.high-fidelity forwa.d-fa.ing vehicle model with a.percent difference of fuel consumption of 1.2%. The benchma.k a.a.ysis is conducted over multiple drive cycles to determine the optima. control policy tha. provides a.benchma.k for rea.-time a.gorithm development a.d determines control trends tha. ca. be used to improve existing a.gorithms. The optima. combined cha.ge susta.ning fuel economy of the vehicle is determined by the dyna.ic progra.ming a.gorithm to be 32.99 MPG, a.52.6% increa.e over the stock 3.6 L 2019 Chevrolet Bla.er.

Continued increa.es in the emission of greenhouse ga.es by pa.senger vehicles have accelerated the production of hybrid electric vehicles. With this increase in production, there has been a parallel demand for continuously improving strategies of hybrid electric vehicle control. The goal of an ideal control strategy is to maximize fuel economy while minimizing emissions. Methods exist by which the globally optimal control strategy may be found. However, these methods are not applicable in real-world driving applications since these methods require a priori knowledge of the upcoming drive cycle. Real-time control strategies use the global optimal as a benchmark against which performance can be evaluated. The goal of this work is to use a previously defined strategy that has been shown to closely approximate the global optimal and implement a radial basis function (RBF) artificial neural network (ANN) that dynamically adapts the strategy based on past driving conditions. The strategy used is the Equivalent Consumption Minimization Strategy (ECMS), which uses an equivalence factor to define the control strategy and the power train component torque split.
