Screening of Type 2 Diabetes in the City of Belo Horizonte: Differences between Genders

Introduction: Diabetes mellitus is a major public health problem that carries a high social and economic burden. Its diagnosis is unknown in half of individuals who have the disease. The diagnosis of the risk factors should be done in the beginning, since changes in lifestyle and hyperglycemic correction may delay the appearance of the disease and its complications. In this context, screening has been considered an important tool for an early detection of diabetes in asymptomatic adults. Objective: The objective is to track diabetes in people from BH, comparing genders. Patients and methods: People were interviewed with questions concerning the risk factors associated with the development of diabetes. According to the risk factors present, they were classified as non-diabetic [ND], pre-diabetic [PD] or diabetic [DM]. Statistical analyses were performed considering p ≤ 0.05 as significant. Results: 1264 individuals participated (5.5% DM, 6.5% PD, 88.0% ND). When grouped, PD and DM males were more prevalent than PD and DM females. Those in the DM group had higher blood pressure, age, glycaemia, number of past smokers, first-degree relatives with diabetes than either PD or ND. Both males and females in DM and PD groups had a higher waist circumference than did either ND males or females. ND men had a higher intake of fried food and smoked more in the past than ND women. Both ND and PD males had higher blood pressure than women from the same groups. Conclusion: Screening for diabetes is very important for an early diagnosis and to avoid future complications in patients. It’s possible to infer that women are more conscientious when it comes to taking care of themselves than men.

Effects of climate changes on distribution of Eremanthus erythropappus and ***(Asteraceae)in Brazil

Phylogeographic patterns of endemic species are critical keys to understand its adaptation to future climate ***,based on chloroplast DNA,we analyzed the genetic diversity of two endemic and endangered tree species from the Brazilian savanna and Atlantic forest(Eremanthus erythropappus and Eremanthus incanus).We also applied the climate-based ecological niche modeling(ENM)to evaluate the impact of the Quaternary climate(last glacial maximum*21 kyr BP(thousand years before present)and Mid-Holocene*6 kyr BP)on the current haplotype ***,we modeled the potential effect of future climate change on the species distribution in 2070 for the most optimistic and pessimistic *** primer/enzyme combination(SFM/HinfI)revealed polymorphism with very low haplotype diversity,showing only three different *** haplotype 1 has very low frequency and it was classified as the oldest,diverging from six mutations from the haplotypes 2 and *** *** populations are structured and differ genetically according to the areas of *** general,the populations located in the north region are genetically different from those located in the *** genetic structuring was observed for *** ENM revealed a large distribution during the past and a severe decrease in geographic distribution of *** and *** from the LGM until present and predicts a drastic decline in suitable areas in the *** reduction may homogenize the genetic diversity and compromise a relevant role of these species on infiltration of groundwater.

Study of interaction between metal ions and quercetin

A displacement test based on the interaction between the flavonoid quercetin and an excess of metal chloride allows the determination of the binding constant for the reaction between quercetin and Ca2+,Mg^2+and Ni^2+.The values obtained were 2.20±1.77×10^3 for Ca^2+,1.37±0.59×10^3 for Mg^2+and 7.03±1.04×10^4 for Ni^2+,and all interactions showed type 1:1 stoichiometry,as determined by titration and by the method of continuous variations(Job’s method).The complexion effect was observed qualitatively through a colorimetric change in the medium(yellow→neon yellow)and spectroscopically through a bathochromic shift in the absorption band of quercetin in the presence of *** investigation serves as a tool for the development and testing of materials capable of capturing toxic metal ions or favoring the absorption of beneficial ions(in relation to the human metabolism)through the construction of efficient bioorganic *** results reported herein allow understanding of this detection system,indicating the following ascending order of the binding constants(Mg^2+

The use of biochar can have several effects on plant germination,depending on raw material,preparation method and application ***,the molecular mechanisms that lead to those results have yet to be *** aim of this research was to improve the understanding of these mechanisms by characterizing the metabolic effects of sugarcane bagasse biochar on soybean *** types of biochars were prepared by pyrolysis at 300℃(SCB300),400℃(SCB400)and 600℃(SCB600).Then,each one was mixed into sand at 1%,3%,5%(w/w)dose,*** experiment was performed in 8 days of incubation,when the number of germinated seeds and the average radicle length were *** evaluate the metabolome,the dry biomass(DB)was subjected to extraction with a mixture of methanol-d4 and D2O(1:1 v/v).The extracts were submitted to metabolomics analysis by Proton Nuclear Magnetic *** Relative Germination,Relative Average Radicle Growth and Germination Index increased in all treatments compared to *** the other hand,the DB increased in all treatments,except for SCB300,at doses of 1%and 3%w/*** metabolites(alanine,asparagine,acetic acid,citric acid,glycerol,fatty acids and sucrose)were identified and quantified in DB extracts as the most influential finding for the separation of *** together,these results strongly suggested that biochars accelerated the catabolism of triacylglycerols to sucrose and induced a slight osmotic stress.

Physical Activity and Leisure in the Daily Life of Nursing Students

The aim of this paper was to describe the routine of Brazilian nursing students, identifying the activities that are part of their daily life, highlighting how much time they dedicate for physical activity practice in their leisure time. The participants of this cross-sectional study were 141 nursing students from a public university in the State of São Paulo. Data were collected using a sociodemographic questionnaire, three closed questions about physical activities and one open question in which the students described their daily life activities. For analysis, we used the chi-squared-test and content analysis. Although academic, household and work activities take up most of the students’ week, some dedicate a portion of their daily live to enjoy leisure periods with physical activities, sedentary behavior and sociocultural activities. Some options of activities seem to be related to Brazilian cultural aspects that are pointed out in this paper. Some recommendations were made, aiming at improving the health of students as well as the importance of a healthier school environment.

Quantification and determination of Starch in Diets Using Different Methodologies:Infrared Spectroscopy with Fourier Transformer,Laser Diffraction and Enzymatic Analysis

A digestibility experiment was conducted in the Animal Nutrition Laboratory of the Veterinary School of the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG), Protocol ethics committee for work with animal experimentation CETEA/ UFMG 212/2010, in order to validate the instrumental techniques Laser Diffraction (Partica) and Infrared Spectroscopy with Fourier Transformer (FTIR) method, as replacement methods of the reference (Enzymatic Analysis) Technique, of starch quantification in diets of growing pigs. The experiment lasted 12 days (7 days of adaptation to the cage and diet and 5 days of total collection). Fifteen barrows with average weight of ±25 kg and 65 days old were used for this study. A completely randomized experimental design was adopted, with split plots and subplots. The plots were the diets (1—Reference, 2—Reference + inclusion of 30% micronized soybean and 3—Reference +30% substitution of plasma) and the subplots were the techniques (Partica, FTIR and Enzymatic Technique, with five repetitions (animals) per diet). The results obtained with the Partica and FTIR techniques were compared to the reference method. There was no statistical difference (p > 5%) between these techniques evaluated in comparison to the reference method to quantify starch. However, it was observed that the FTIR technique was different from the reference method for (p > 5%) overestimating the means of evaluated samples.

Cardiovascular Risk Assessment in the Nursing Team of a Cardiology Hospital

Objective: Cardiovascular diseases are the most common causes of morbidity and the leading cause of mortality in the world scenario, accounting for about 20% of all deaths in individuals over 30 years. It has attributed this to the increase in the company’s exposure to risk factors. It identifies cardiovascular risk factors in the nursing team and compares the cardiovascular risk by Framingham score among professionals of middle and upper working in a referral hospital in cardiology. Method: Cross-sectional quantitative study was conducted in 2014, in a reference hospital in cardiology located in Recife/Pernambuco, Brazil. Data of cardiologic risk factors were collected from 82 nursing team members, comprised of technical, auxiliary nurses, and nurses between 30 and 74 years of age. The cardiovascular risk level was evaluated by the Framingham Score. Data were organized and analyzed by means of the SPSS, with descriptive statistics and Student-t test for the continuous variables. Results: Family history, stress and sedentary life style were the prevalent risk factors in more than half of the professionals. Only 5.23% of the technical and auxiliary nurses had a high risk score for cardiovascular event. Conclusion: The data indicates a low cardiovascular risk for these professionals and the presence of risk factors that can be modified. Health surveillance of these professionals is necessary in order to avoid a change to a risk of greater vulnerability.

Health Education has shown itself as essential for the understanding of individuals about psychological and physical changes caused by diseases. The chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a severe public health problem, and it depends on health education measures for its control. A group of patients with COPD, in pneumatological medical treatment, were investigated to find information about the disease. An observational, descriptive and analytical study with analysis and application of a semistructured questionnaire to evaluate the individuals’ knowledge about the COPD. Collected data were registered and analyzed using Google Docs. The software used for the calculation of statistical measures was Microsoft Excel®. For the research participants’ characterization analysis, the use of grouped data for the frequency distribution of Sturges Rule was necessary. This study provided knowledge about which information a group of bearers of COPD receives at a college hospital providing treatment. The interviewed have an average age of 70 years old and most are women with education level between elementary and high school and diagnose time of 6.8

Punica granatum *** known antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory *** of different parts of this plant have been commonly used in the folk medicine to prevent and treat infections;and studies have supported the use of *** extracts for this ***,little is known of the effects of ***-derived fractions in severe infectious diseases such as ***,we investigated the actions of the hexane fraction(HF),rich in lipophilic compounds,obtained from the leaves of this plant,in a murine model of polymicrobial *** pre-treatment with HF increased mortality in septic *** same animals presented with lower levels of interleukin-6,nitric oxide and hydrogen peroxide in their peritoneal lavage samples than vehicle *** also increased polymorphonuclear cell accumulation in to the peritoneum of mice with ***-derived nitric oxide upon lipopolysaccharide stimuli was markedly reduced by incubation with ***,triterpenes,phytosterols,vitamin E and ascorbyl palmitate were detected in the *** results indicate that *** leaf lipophilic fractions may worsen sepsis *** effect may be associated with its bioactive compounds which act synergistically or not,increasing sepsis mortality in vivo.

Rapid Differentiation of Closely Related Citrus Genotypes by Fluorescence Spectroscopy

The differentiation of closely related Citrus genotypes is a meticulous, laborious, and time-consuming task that involves the assessment of complex traits such as growth, tolerance to stress, photosynthetic efficiency, yield, and many others. Such a task is generally accomplished either by analyzing specific features of adult plants or by applying molecular markers to young trees. On one hand, only after plants start yielding can distinct genotypes be differentiated by comparing their fruit sizes, shapes, taste, and the number of seeds. On the other hand, molecular markers are expensive, and demand expertise and time for the analysis of a larger number of plants. For these reasons, the development of techniques that could assist in an early, quick and accurate differen-tiation of closely related Citrus varieties is of utmost importance. In this context, laser-induced fluorescence spectroscopy (LIFS) is a promising technique, since it is rapid, highly sensitive, and inexpensive. Previous studies showed that LIFS can differentiate a variety of sweet orange. However, this new study aimed to determine LIFS accuracy in the differentiation and grouping of very closely varieties of four Sunki mandarin selections: Comum, Florida, Tropical, and Maravilha. Furthermore we compared the results with ISSR and SSR molecular markers for the same varieties. LIFS technique distinguished the four selections with accuracy greater than 70%. Only with molecular markers was possible distinguishing clearly Tropical from Maravilha, but not Comum from Florida selections. In this way the results suggest that LIFS may be a sound tool for helping the identification of closely Citrus varieties.
