Aim:To investigate whether the endothelin etAreceptor blocker provides similarbenefit on cardiac remodeling and survival in a hypertensive rat model of chronicheart failure（CHF）.Methods:Male stroke-prone spontaneously hypertensive（SHR-SP）rats were subjected to permanent ligation of the left coronary artery andwere treated for 6 weeks with the endothelin etAreceptor blocker LU 135252(***-1.d-1)starting 24 h after ligation or ***-operated rats servedas normal *** mean arterial blood pressure（MAP）,heart rate（HR）,leftventricular end-diastolic pressure（LVEDP）,left ventricular contractility(LVdp/dtmax),left ventricular inner diameter（LVD）and circumference（LVC）,septalthickness,left ventricular interstitial collagen content（ICC）and heart weight（HW）were measured at the end of the ***:Compared with the untreatedgroup,LU 135252 tended to increase HW（1.43±0.03 vs 1.38±0.04 g;P>0.05）,increased LVD（7.65±0.24 mm vs 6.58±0.14 mm;P0.05）,reduced LVEDP（144mmHg vs 27±4 mmHg;PetA receptor blockade with LU 135252improves cardiac hemodynamics,however,it does not affect long-term survivaland worsens cardiac ***,endothelin etAreceptor antagonists areunlikely to have an important role in the management of patients with CHF.

The seismic performance of bridges depends on the ductile behavior of its column, as the deck and other substructural components except pile foundations are normally designed to be elastic to facilitate bridge retrofitting. Codes such as AASHTO, Caltrans, IRC： 112 etc. give guidelines for the seismic performance enhancement of columns through ductile detailing. In the present study, a methodology for the seismic performance enhancement of bridges is discussed by using a ＂Parameter-Based Influence Factor＂（PIF） developed from factorial analysis. The parameters considered in the factorial analysis are： percentage of longitudinal reinforcement （Pt）, compressive strength of concrete （f＇c）, yield strength of steel （fy）, spacing of lateral ties （5） and column height （/4）. The influence of each parameter and their combination on the limit states considered is estimated. Pushover analysis is used to evaluate the capacity of columns, considering shear failure criteria. A total of 243 （35 combinations） analysis results are compiled to develop ＇PIF＇ used in the performance enhancement process. The study also encompasses other sub-objectives such as evaluating the discrepancies in using the Importance Factor （/） in designing bridges of varied functional importance; and estimating the aspect ratio and slenderness ratio values of bridge columns for its initial sizing.

The influence of heat treating on mechanical properties as well as on the sliding wear behavior of sintered Fe-1.5Mo-0.7C steels was experimentally studied. The microstruc-tures of sintered steels change from upper bainite to martensite, tempered martensite, pearlite and lower bainite depending on the heat treating conditions. Heat treating increases the hardness of sintered steels but high tempering temperature, i.e. 700℃, causes the hardness to be even lower than that of the as-sintered ones. The impact energy of sintered steels increases with increasing tempering temperature and arrives the highest at 700℃, while the steels tempered at 200℃ have the highest transverse rupture strength. Austempering results in fair good overall properties, such as hardness, impact energy, and transverse rupture strength. When the sintered steels were austempered, oil-quenched or tempered below 400? after quenched, the wear coefficient becomes considerably lower. Fair high hardness, such as HV30 > 380, and structures of martensite, tempered martensite or lower bainite are beneficial to lowering the wear coefficient. Under the wear test conditions given, delamination and oxidational wear are the main wear regimes for sintered Fe-1.5Mo-0.7C steels. Fe3O4 in the wear debris is beneficial to lowering wear coefficient.

Ovalbumin （OVA）, chicken egg albumin, is an environmentally friendly, non-toxic, cheap surface active agent. It has electrochemically active sulfhydryl residues in molecular structure. OVA adsorption on pyrite as an alternative depressant was investigated by cyclic voltammetry, FTIR spectroscopy and flotation. Tests were conducted in a wide potential range in alkaline pH to clarify the role of electrochemical condition on the adsorption mechanisms and the rate of depression. In the absence of OVA, the floatability reached its maxima around slightly oxidizing condition. Beyond the range, it decreased presumably due to the formation of Fe-oxyhydroxides together with the hydrophilic S-containing species. OVA-pyrite interaction occurred in the whole examined potential range. Depressing effect of OVA increased gradually from reducing to slightly oxidizing potential, open circuit potential （OCP） of pyrite, mainly due to weak conformational changes in OVA molecules together with the hydrophobic interaction around OCP. The rate of depression reached its maxima at moderately oxidizing potentials, which was referred to electrostatic attraction. This level was almost kept at higher potentials owing to OVA adsorption as metal-chelates.

AIM: To elucidate the cardioprotective effects of T-type calcium channel blocker mibefradil and compare with that of the angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor ramipril in a stroke-prone spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR- SP) model of congestive heart failure (CHF) after myocardial infarction (MI). MetHODS: SHR-SP rats were subjected to permanent ligation of the left anterior decending coronary artery. Treatment with mibefradil (10 mg·kg-1·d-1), ramipril (10 mg·kg-1·d-1), or placebo was initiated 4 weeks before surgery and continued up to 6 weeks after induction of MI. Sham-operated rats served as controls. RESULTS: In placebo-treated MI rats, six weeks after MI, left ventricular circumference, inner diameter, and left ventricular end-diastolic pressure (LVEDP) were increased, whereas mean arterial blood pressure (MAP) and maximum rate of rise of left ventricular pressure (dp/ dtmax) were decreased compared with sham-operated controls (P05), and dp/dtmax was improved (Peterious rather than beneficial compared with ramipril or even placebo treatment in experim
