Temporal and phenological profiles of open and dense Caatinga using remote sensing:response to precipitation and its irregularities

Caatinga is a typical biome of Brazil's semiarid regions and subject to climate *** is needed on the relation of its features to climate *** study analyzed the infl uence of rainfall and its irregularities in open and dense woody Caatinga *** curves were generated by means of Normalized Difference Vegetation Index(NDVI)time profiles in the Grota do Angico Conservation Unit study area in Sergipe *** data from 2000 to 2018 were collected and phenological curves generated using various estimate methods that produced the following variables:[start of season,end of season,peak of season position,length of season,mean growing season and maximum seasonal].Rainfall showed a standard intra-annual behavior,with inter-annual variations related to irregularities infl uencing Caatinga *** Caatinga vegetation had higher values of NDVI in all periods,even in anomalous years compared to open Caatinga,in addition to having longer leaf coverage over the year,with an anticipated start and a more extended seasonal *** analysis of the rainfall regime made it possible to assess its infl uence on the Caatinga and phenological profiles proved to be fundamental to understand periods of physiological change of open and dense *** results indicate that dense Caatinga maintains physiological activity longer,which may be associated with greater moisture maintenance in a semiarid *** addition,because it has a greater leaf cover for longer periods,the soil may be preserved and maintain its characteristics longer,reducing the effects of *** results may be associated with the type of forest management and conservation in this *** total or partial suppression of individual remnants of Caatinga should be avoided,since the most open areas have lower photosynthetic capacity,affected to a considerable extent from the effects of adverse climatic ***,open Caatinga has a reduced cap

Optimizing the evolution of strength for lime-stabilized rammed soil

In the present study,unconfined compressive strength(qu)values of two lime-treated soils(soil 1 and 2)with curing times of 28 d,90 d and 360 d were *** influence of void/lime ratio was represented by the porosity/volumetric lime content ratio(η/Liv)as the main parameter.η/Liv represents the volume of void influenced by compaction effort and lime *** evolution of qu was analyzed for each soil using the coefficient of determination as the optimization *** at providing adjustments to the mechanical resistance values,the η/Liv parameter was modified to η/LivC using the adjustment exponent C(to make qu-η/Liv variation rates compatible).The results show that with the decrease of η/*** increases potentially and the optimized values of C were *** mechanical resistance data show similar trends between qu and η/LivC for the studied silty soil-ground lime mixtures,which were cured at ambient temperature(23±2)℃ with different curing times of 28-360 ***,optimized equations were presented using the normalized strengths and the proposed optimization model,which show 6% error and 95% acceptability on average.

The Behavior of Recycled Concrete through the Application of an Isotropic Damage Model

The main goal of this paper is to describe the mechanical behavior of the CDW recycled concrete in compression, using an isotropic damage model adapted to the variation of the replacement rate of natural aggregates by recycled ones. The isotropic model by Mazars was used as a constitutive equation for the CDW concrete and its adjustment parameters, A and B, were written as quadratic polynomials according to the aggregates replacement rate. The model was evaluated for conventional and recycled concretes. For the latter ones, the aggregates replacement ratios evaluated were 50% and 100%. The results show good approximation between the analytical and numerical values obtained with the adapted isotropic damage model and experimental concrete results for both compressive and flexural strength.

Importance-performance analysis: Revisiting a tool for the evaluation of clinical services

The importance-performance analysis method (IPA) is used in market research in order to measure the level of customer satisfaction. The aim of this study was to evaluate and highlight the use of IPA as a management tool to measure quality of dental services. We suggest that this method can be easily implemented in a dental educational setting, as a performance outcome measure that includes patient input. The study was conducted in a dental service through a valid questionnaire, SERVQUAL. This instrument explores levels of service quality perceived by patients. It was conducted in four companies in Brazil in 2011 (derived from different industry segments;two from textiles, one from hospital care and the other from the manufacturing industry) in two States (S?o Paulo and Minas Gerais). These companies were covered by the same dental managed care organization which contracted with independent dentists to provide care. The study was divided into two stages: the first, in which beneficiaries answered the questionnaire prior to receiving dental treatment, and the second when the same beneficiaries answered after completing their dental treatment. Data obtained from SERVQUAL generated graphs that were used to characterize the IPA matrix using several dimensions of care. The Assurance Dimension had the highest average in both expectation and perception. The Reliability dimension showed the value of the most negative GAP among the dimensions, and the best value occurred in the Responsiveness dimension. The IPA tool may be effective in dental Medicine since it highlights the key points to be improved in the delivery of dental services in a clinical setting.

Catechin and Epicatechin Contents in Wines Obtained from Brazilian Exotic Tropical Fruits

Flavonoids constitute a diverse group of secondary metabolites which are present in both fruits and wines. The contents of some of the most prominent compounds such as catechin and epicatechin are little known in wines prepared from tropical fruits. In this context, this study was aimed to determine catechin and epicatechin contents in wines processed from 7 tropical fruits (cajá-umbu, cashew apple, mangaba, pineapple, siriguela, sugar apple and umbu), by HPLC-DAD system. Moreover the total phenolic compounds content was also determined in these wines and compared to those of the commercial wines obtained from grapes and cashew apple. The wines produced in this work contained higher total phenolic compounds contents when compared to that of the grape wines. The higher values of total phenolic compounds were found in wines elaborated from cajá-umbu (123.4 mg·mL-1 GAE) and from cashew (87.5 mg·mL-1 GAE). However, higher contents of catechin and epicatechin were found in wines obtained from mangaba (14.01 ± 0.37 mg·L-1, 22.66 ± 1.03 mg·L-1), siriguela (9.97 ± 0.28, 4.38 ± 0.45) and cashew apple (7.46 ± 0.18, 1.30 ± 0.17) fruits. The present work indicates that the use of exotic tropical fruits is feasible in developing wines which could serve as functional foods as these contain appreciable quantities of catechin and epicatechin.

Severity of Leaf Rust and Brown Eyespot in Genotypes of Coffea arabica *** with High Plant density

This study investigated the severity of leaf rust and brown eyespot in genotypes of Coffea arabica L. cultivated with high plant density in the region of Caparaó-ES. The experiment was conducted in a competition field, cultivated with high plant density (8333 plants per hectare), following a randomized block design, with 16 genotypes and four replications. The plants were evaluated during consecutive harvests to study two complete reproductive cycles (from 2010 to 2012). Data were obtained for the phenologicalstages of flowering, graining, maturation and vegetative rest of each cycle. The severity of leaf rust (Hemileia vastratrix) and brown eyespot (Cercospora coffeicola) was evaluated using descriptive scales. It was observed that the genotypes are able to keep a considerable level of resistance to the leaf rust and brown eyespot when cultivated with increased density. The genotypes presented variability regarding the severity of the leaf rust and brown eyespot, indicating the existence of differential levels of resistance between them. For cultivation with high plant density, the genotypes Katipó, Paraíso MG H419-1, H419-3-3-7-16-4-1-1, Araponga MG1, Catucaí Amarelo 24/137, Catiguá MG2, Sacramento MG1, Pau-Brasil MG1, Catiguá MG3, Oeiras MG 6851 and Tupi present higher level of resistance for leaf rust. In addition, the genotypes Paraíso MG H419-1, Catiguá MG2, Pau-Brasil MG1, Catiguá MG3, Oeiras MG 6851, Tupi, Catuaí IAC 44, Catuaí IAC 81 and Catuaí IAC 144 present higher level of resistance for brown eyespot.

Seeds total use policy consists in the use of two different methodologies applied together, forming a favorable non residue environmentally favorable production cycle: The two used techniques are biodiesel from oil seed and LTC- Low Temperature Conversion methodologies. The process first step is the oilseed extraction by Soxhlet in hexane. This step produces two products: Oil, liquid part and the called tart, extraction solid residue. The oil is used to produce biodiesel by basic catalysis, transesterification reaction and the tart is used in the LTC process, technique that consists of heating residues at the temperature of 380oC-400oC under an inert atmosphere producing four different compounds: Pyrolysis oil, gas, water and pyrolytic char. This study objective is to develop a methodology which is able to use it own residue to produce alternative energy sources to its cycle working and even to obtain products that are useful in to the agricultural step, assisting the seeds cultivation phase, for example. The obtained compounds are characterized by IR, GC-MS and other parameters following the Brazilian standard regulation for biodiesel, ANP. This methodology is in accordance with the actual green chemistry, don’t generates waste, but use it to generate products of higher commercial value.
