The Urban street segment Chapter of the Highway Capacity Manual(HCM)includes a methodology for evaluating the level of service urban street segments provide to automobile *** methodology does not account for pedestrian activity at un-signalized midblock crosswalk on an urban street *** activity at un-signalized midblock crosswalk on urban street segments causes friction conditions between automobiles and *** a consequence,the average time it takes vehicles to travel along the segment is *** segment running time decreases both the travel s.eed of automobiles and the level of service provided to automobile *** is an inverse relationship between the delay incurred by interrupted vehicles and the s.eeds at which pedestrians walk while crossing at *** account for this delay,there is a need to investigate pedestrian walking s.eeds at un-signalized midblock *** study measured pedestrian walking s.eeds by age-group at two un-signalized midblock crosswalks on urban street *** first objective of this paper is to perform statistical analyses to examine the measured free-flow pedestrian walking *** second objective is to demonstrate how the findings of this study can be incorporated into the Urban street segment Analysis Chapter of the *** walking s.eeds were recorded and analyzed for 2937 *** results show teenagers walk at an average s.eed of 1.45 m/s,young adults walk at an average s.eed of 1.55 m/s,middle age pedestrians walk at a s.eed of 1.45 m/s,older pedestrians walk at s.eed of 1.09 m/s,and elderly or physically disabled pedestrians walk at a s.eed of 1.04 m/s.

Mitigating osteonecrosis of the jaw(ONJ) through preventive dental care and understanding of risk factors

It is well established that alterations in phosphate metabolism have a profound effect on hard and soft tissues of the oral cavity. The present-day clinical form of osteonecrosis of the jaw(ONJ) was preceded by phosphorus necrosis of the jaw, ca. 1860. The subsequent removal of yellow phosphorus from matches in the early 20 th century saw a parallel decline in "phossy jaw" until the early 2000 s, when similar reports of unusual jaw bone necrosis began to appear in the literature describing jaw necrosis in patients undergoing chemotherapy and concomitant steroid and bisphosphonate treatment. Today, the potential side effect of ONJ associated with medications that block osteoclast activity(antiresorptive) is well known, though the mechanism remains unclear and the management and outcomes are often unsatisfactory. Much of the existing literature has focused on the continuing concerns of appropriate use of bisphosphonates and other antiresorptive medications, the incomplete or underdeveloped research on ONJ, and the use of drugs with anabolic potential for treatment of osteoporosis. While recognizing that ONJ is a rare occurrence and ONJ-associated medications play an important role in fracture risk reduction in osteoporotic patients, evidence to date suggests that health care providers can lower the risk further by dental evaluations and care prior to initiating antiresorptive therapies and by monitoring dental health during and after treatment. This review describes the current clinical management guidelines for ONJ, the critical role of dental-medical management in mitigating risks, and the current understanding of the effects of predominantly osteoclast-modulating drugs on bone homeostasis.

Due to its ubiquitous presence in the environment and the lack of a scientific consensus regarding the environmental safety of the widely used anionic surfactant sodium Lauryl sulfate(CAs No:151-21-3),a systematic literature review and thematic analysis was *** studies about sodium lauryl sulfate(sLs)in the environment in key databases were reviewed,with coding methods used to identify impact categories from sLs exposure without potential narration *** on the limited number of studies on sLs,there is empirical evidence of this surfactant contributing to environmental toxicity at various concentrations(0.004-3509 mg L^(-1)),with aquatic organisms at a higher risk from ***,exposure to sLs can elicit changes to various organismic processes and environmental ***,further study on sLs in various environmental compartments is recommended to monitor the level of sLs pollution,understand its behavior upon contact with various environmental media,and understand its impacts on flora and ***,sLs quantification should be done on commonly used consumer products to potentially regulate its use and to consequently curb sLs pollution from its source.

Performance evaluation of the HCM 2010 platoon dispersion model under midblock pedestrian and truck traffic friction conditions

The urban street segment analysis chapter of the Highway Capacity Manual 2010 provides a methodology for evaluating automobile performance on street segments within an urban roadway network （TRB, 2010）. The methodology involves applying a platoon dispersion model to predict platoon arrival profiles at a downstream signalized intersection; using the predicted arrival flow profiles to compute the proportion of vehicle arrivals on green, and subsequently compute the control delay, average travel s.eed and level of service （LOs） of the segment. The predictive ability of the HCM 2010 platoon dispersion model has not been independently evaluated using field data. This paper, therefore, uses field data to evaluate the performance of the HCM 2010 platoon dispersion model under friction and no friction traffic conditions. The traffic friction conditions include pedestrian and vehicular interactions on urban collector street segments and the presence of trucks within the traffic stream on principal urban arterial segments. Based on the results obtained, the HCM 2010 platoon dispersion model performs relatively well in predicting platoon arrival profiles on urban street segments with no friction traffic conditions. The results, however, show the model＇s performance is limited on urban street segments with pedestrian and truck friction conditions.

The conservation status of all the amphibians in China is analyzed,and the country is shown to be a global priority for conservation in comparison to many other countries of the *** Chinese regions are particularly rich in amphibian diversity:Hengduan,Nanling,and Wuyi ***-manders are more threatened than frogs and *** smaller families show a high propensity to become seriously threatened:Bombinatoridae,Cryptobranchidae,Hynobiidae and *** other parts of the world,stream-breeding,high-elevation forest amphibians have a much higher likeli-hood of being seriously *** loss,pollution,and over-harvesting are the most serious threats to Chinese ***-harvesting is a less pervasive threat than habitat loss,but it is more likely to drive a species into rapid *** conservation challenges are mentioned with recommendations for the highest priority research and conservation actions.

Regulation of mitochondrial biogenesis is essential for proper cellular functioning. Mitochondrial DNA （mtDNA） depletion and the resulting mitochondrial malfunction have been implicated in cancer, neurodegeneration, diabetes, aging, and many other human diseases. Although it is known that the dynamics of the mammalian mitochondrial genome are not linked with that of the nuclear genome, very little is known about the mechanism of mtDNA propagation. Nevertheless, our understanding of the mode of mtDNA replication has ad- vanced in recent years, though not without some controversies. This review summarizes our current knowledge of mtDNA copy number control in mammalian cells, while focusing on both mtDNA replication and turnover. Although mtDNA copy number is seemingly in excess, we reason that mtDNA copy number control is an important aspect of mitochondrial genetics and biogenesis and is essential for normal cellular function.

Acoustic engineers are faced with the challenge of minimising reverberation time in their designs so as to contribute to the health and well-being of those traveling by train and those on the *** the problem is easy to identify,it is not as simple to *** acoustical environment of a train tunnel is complex,with a variety of noise contributing factors such as train announcements,s.eech of commuters,ventilation systems,electrical equipment and wheel and rail *** a result,there is some difficulty in modeling the complete acoustic environment with computational or acoustic first *** this study,an experimental rig was constructed to model the acoustic behavior within a *** modal properties for the 300 Hz to 1500 Hz range,including resonances and mode shapes were identified and were shown to successfully correspond to theoretical results and a computational model created in COMsOL using Finite Element Analysis.

Modeling, simulation, and prediction of global energy indices: a differential approach

Modeling, simulation, and prediction of global energy indices remain veritable tools for econometric, engineering, analysis, and prediction of energy indices. Thus, this paper differentially modeled, simulated, and non-differentially predicated the global energy indices. The state-of-the-art of the research includes normalization of energy indices, generation of differential rate terms, and regression of rate terms against energy indices to generate coefficients and unexplained terms. On imposition of initial conditions, the solution to the system of linear differential equations was realized in a Matlab environment. There was a strong agreement between the simulated and the field data. The exact solutions are ideal for interpolative prediction of historic data. Furthermore, the simulated data were upgraded for extrapolative prediction of energy indices by introducing an innovative model, which is the synergy of deflated and inflated prediction factors. The innovative model yielded a trendy prediction data for energy consumption, gross domestic product, carbon dioxide emission and human development index. However, the oil price was untrendy, which could be attributed to odd circumstances. Moreover, the sensitivity of the differential rate terms was instrumental in discovering the overwhelming effect of independent indices on the dependent index. Clearly, this paper has accomplished interpolative and extrapolative prediction of energy indices and equally recommends for further investigation of the untrendy nature of oil price.

For decades,African economies have embarked on financial sector ***,the empirical implications of these reforms have been *** paper investigates the impact of financial development on Economic growth using time series data in *** investigation was carried out using three common indicators of financial development(broad money,deposit/GDP and domestic credit to private sector).Using the Auto Regressive Distributive Lag(ARDL)technique of estimation,it was discovered that there exist a short-run positive relationship between monetary mass(M2),government expenditure and economic growth,a short run negative relationship between bank deposits,private investment and economic growth equally *** in the long run,all indicators of financial development show a positive and significant impact on economic *** paper thus confirms the existence of a positive and long-term impact of all the indicators of financial development on economic growth through bound *** is therefore proposed that the financial reforms in Cameroon should be pushed forward in order to boost the development of the financial sector thus an increase in its role on economic growth.
