Pediatric Nd:YAG laser capsulotomy in the operating room: review of 87 cases

AIM: To report a large series of children having Nd:YAG laser capsulotomy in the operating room using the lateral decubitus position. METHODS: Medical records of children who underwent Nd:YAG laser capsulotomy in the operating room at Ann & Robert H. lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago between September 2008 and April 2017 were reviewed. Induction of general anesthesia and intubation was performed in the supine position after which the patient was placed in lateral decubitus position. The Nd:YAG laser capsulotomy was performed using a standard protocol. At the completion of the procedure, the patient was turned back into the supine position and extubated. RESUlTS: This study included 87 eyes of 60 patients. Patient's age ranged from 1 to 18 y(mean 6.4±4.1 y). In most cases(84/87, 97%), the procedure was performed under general anesthesia. In all cases, good focus on the membrane was achieved, and the procedure was performed successfully. There were no intraoperative ocular or anesthesia-related complications. CONClUSION: When performing Nd:YAG laser capsulotomy in the operating room, the lateral decubitus position allowsan easy and safe approach without the risk of potentially devastating complications that have been associated with the previously described sitting and prone positions.

Social media is commonly used by governments to disseminate information related to transparency and institutional promotion,but its potential for the dissemination of cultural resources is often *** research proposes a strategy for adopting social media to achieve cultural dissemination in the municipality of lamas,Peru,which has tourism potential and has been awarded the“Best Tourism Villages”seal of the World Tourism ***,we propose a case study at a propositional exploratory *** start by determining the current state of dissemination of tangible and intangible resources,as well as the practical use of social media,through a survey of 20 *** results reveal that crafts are the most widely disseminated tangible resource in the municipality(according to 55%of officials),and intangible resources are occasionally disseminated(50%).We also find that Facebook is the only digital channel used to disseminate cultural *** this context,we formulate a strategy for adopting social media to improve cultural dissemination,which consists of six phases:(i)forming a work team,(ii)preparing a budget plan,(iii)strengthening capacities,(iv)taking inventory of cultural resources,(v)coordinating community interests and(vi)preparing a cultural dissemination *** findings can contribute to formulating public initiatives for the institutionalisation of social media in governments for the purposes of preserving,promoting and guaranteeing the accessibility of cultural heritage.

Regulation of mitochondrial biogenesis is essential for proper cellular functioning. Mitochondrial DNA （mtDNA） depletion and the resulting mitochondrial malfunction have been implicated in cancer, neurodegeneration, diabetes, aging, and many other human diseases. Although it is known that the dynamics of the mammalian mitochondrial genome are not linked with that of the nuclear genome, very little is known about the mechanism of mtDNA propagation. Nevertheless, our understanding of the mode of mtDNA replication has ad- vanced in recent years, though not without some controversies. This review summarizes our current knowledge of mtDNA copy number control in mammalian cells, while focusing on both mtDNA replication and turnover. Although mtDNA copy number is seemingly in excess, we reason that mtDNA copy number control is an important aspect of mitochondrial genetics and biogenesis and is essential for normal cellular function.

Social functioning is a key domain of impairment in both autism spectrum disorder(ASD)and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder(ADHD).This review adopts the social information-processing model as the theoretical framework to compare and contrast the deficits of ASD and ADHD at each of the six steps of social *** disorders show deficits at each step,but the nature and origins of the deficits are ***,while both disorders exhibit a common outcome of social impairment,the exact pathways that each disorder traverses along the six steps of social information-processing are *** ASD,there is a social knowledge/behaviour deficit arising from difficulties in social/emotional cue detection,encoding,and interpretation,leading to problems in joining and initiating social *** ADHD,there is a performance deficit incurred by disruption arising from the ADHD symptoms of inattention and hyperactivity/impulsivity,while its acquisition capacity on social knowledge is relatively *** inattentive,intrusive,and impulsive behaviours of ADHD unsettle social ***,this review proposes training targets for intervention along the six steps of the social information-processing model for ASD and ADHD,as well as areas for future research in further elucidating the social impairment of the two disorders.

Surgical outcomes and quality of life following exercise-based prehabilitation for hepato-pancreatico-biliary surgery:A systematic review and meta-analysis

Background:Hepato-pancreatico-biliary(HPB)patients experience significant risk of preoperative *** assessing preventative prehabilitation in HPB populations are *** systematic review and meta-analysis evaluates outcomes for HPB patients treated with exercise *** sources:A comprehensive search of MEDlINE(via Ovid),Embase(Ovid),Scopus,Web of Science Core Collection,Cochrane library(Wiley),Pro Quest Dissertations,Theses Global,and Google Scholar was conducted with review and extraction following PRISMA *** studies evaluated more than 5 adult HPB patients undergoing≥7-day exercise *** primary outcome was postoperative length of stay(lOS);secondary outcomes included complications,mortality,physical performance,and quality of ***:We evaluated 1778 titles and abstracts and selected 6(randomized controlled trial,n=3;prospective cohort,n=1;retrospective cohort,n=2)that included 957 *** those,536 patients(56.0%)underwent exercise prehabilitation and 421(44.0%)received standard *** in both groups were similar with regards to important demographic *** was associated with a 5.20-day lOS reduction(P=0.03);when outliers were removed,lOS reduction decreased to 1.85 days and was non-statistically significant(P=0.34).Postoperative complications(OR=0.70;95%CI:0.39 to 1.26;P=0.23),major complications(OR=0.83;95%CI:0.60 to 1.14;P=0.24),and mortality(OR=0.67;95%CI:0.17 to 2.70;P=0.57)were *** was associated with improved strength,cardiopulmonary function,quality of life,and alleviated ***:Exercise prehabilitation may reduce lOS and morbidity following HPB *** with well-defined exercise regimens are needed to optimize exercise prehabilitation outcomes.

1 Introduction In an aging society with persistent high prevalence of cardiovascular disease （CVD） in the elderly population, the health care system is facing an increasing challenge to effectively care for these patients. However, due to the under-representation of CVD patients over 75 years of age in clinical trials, assessing safety and efficacy of diagnostic and therapeutic approaches, the evidence for managing elderly CVD patients is especially limited. Physiological changes of aging intertwined with pathophysiology of CVD, and comorbid conditions often complicate clinical management.

High surface area and mesoporous activated carbon from KOH-activated dragon fruit peels for methylene blue dye adsorption:Optimization and mechanism study

In this study,an alternative precursor for production of activated carbon was introduced using dragon fruit(Hylocereus costaricensis)peel(DFP).Moreover,KOH was used as a chemical activator in the thermal carbonization process to convert DFP into activated carbon(DFPAC).In order to accomplish this research,several approaches were employed to examine the elemental composition,surface properties,amorphous and crystalline nature,essential active group,and surface morphology of the *** BrunauerEmmettTeller test demonstrated a mesoporous structure of the DFPAC has a high surface area of 756.3 m2g *** cationic dye Methylene Blue(MB)was used as a probe to assess the efficiency of DFPAC towards the removal of MB dye from aqueous *** effects of adsorption input factors(*** dose(A:0.040.12 g l 1),pH(B:310),and temperature(C:3050℃))were investigated and optimized using statistical analysis(*** design(BBD)).The adsorption kinetic model can be best categorized as the pseudofirst order(PFO).Whereas,the adsorption isotherm model can be best described by langmuir model,with maximum adsorption capacity of DFPAC for MB dye was 195.2 mg g 1 at 50℃.The adsorption mechanism of MB by DFPAC surface was attributed to the electrostatic interaction,pp interaction,and ***,the results support the ability of DFP to be a promising precursor for production of highly porous activated carbon suitable for removal of cationic dyes(***).

Seizures of agrochemical formulations have increased in Brazil and Rio Grande do Sul is among the Brazilian states with the highest number of seizures of these products obtained illicitly. The use of illicit formulations can cause significant harm to agricultural production, the environment, and non-target species. This study evaluated the cytotoxicity and oxidative stress of a seized formulation containing the herbicide imazethapyr (IMZT). Characterization of the herbicide included gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and thermal analyses (thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC)). Hemolytic and cytotoxicity assays in ZF-l hepatic cells showed IC50 values of 12.75 µg/ml, 3.01 µg/ml, 2.67 µg/ml, and 1.61 µg/ml for erythrocytes, [3(4,5-dimethyl)-2 bromide-5 diphenyl tetrazolium] (MTT), neutral red (NR), and lactate dehydrogenase (lDH) assays, respectively. The median IC50 of 2.84 µg/ml was used in oxidative stress assays, revealing increased reactive oxygen species (ROS) production, reduced total sulfhydryl content, and decreased superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) activity. This study is the first to report in vitro oxidative stress induced by IMZT in the ZF-l cell line, emphasizing the importance of in vitro assays for assessing the toxic effects of seized agrochemicals on human health and the environment.

In vitro 3D malignant melanoma model for the evaluation of hypericin-loaded oil-in-water microemulsion in photodynamic therapy

Advances in biomimetic three-dimensional(3D) melanoma models have brought new prospects of drug screening and disease modeling, since their physiological relevancy for recapitulating in vivo tumor architectures is more accurate than traditional two-dimensional(2D) cell culture. Gelatin methacryloyl(GelMA) is widely used as a tissue-engineered scaffold hydrogel for 3D cell culture. In the present study, an in vitro 3D malignant melanoma model based on Gel MA was fabricated to evaluate the efficiency of hypericin(Hy)-loaded microemulsion(ME) in photodynamic therapy against melanoma. The ME was produced by the spontaneous emulsification method to enhance the bioavailability of Hy at tumor sites. Hy-loaded MEs were applied to a 3D malignant melanoma model made using 6% Gel MA and the co-culture of B16F10 and Balb/c 3T3 cells,followed by crosslinking using violet light(403 nm). The observation revealed excellent cell viability and the presence of F-actin cytoskeleton network. Hy-loaded MEs exhibited higher phototoxicity and cell accumulation(about threefold) than free Hy, and the cells cultured in the 3D system displayed lower susceptibility(about 2.5-fold) than those in 2D *** findings indicate that the developed MEs are potential delivery carriers for Hy;furthermore, Gel MA hydrogel-based modeling in polydimethylsiloxane(PDMS) molds is a user-friendly and cost-effective in vitro platform to investigate drug penetration and provide a basis for evaluating nanocarrier efficiency for skin cancer and other skin-related diseases.

Due to its ubiquitous presence in the environment and the lack of a scientific consensus regarding the environmental safety of the widely used anionic surfactant Sodium lauryl Sulfate(CAS No:151-21-3),a systematic literature review and thematic analysis was *** studies about sodium lauryl sulfate(SlS)in the environment in key databases were reviewed,with coding methods used to identify impact categories from SlS exposure without potential narration *** on the limited number of studies on SlS,there is empirical evidence of this surfactant contributing to environmental toxicity at various concentrations(0.004-3509 mg l^(-1)),with aquatic organisms at a higher risk from ***,exposure to SlS can elicit changes to various organismic processes and environmental ***,further study on SlS in various environmental compartments is recommended to monitor the level of SlS pollution,understand its behavior upon contact with various environmental media,and understand its impacts on flora and ***,SlS quantification should be done on commonly used consumer products to potentially regulate its use and to consequently curb SlS pollution from its source.
