Generalized Linear Mixed Model (GLMM) has b.en widely used in small area estimation for health indicators. b.yesian estimation is usually used to construct statistical intervals, however, its computational intensity is a b.g challenge for large complex surveys. Frequentist approaches, such as b.otstrapping, and Monte Carlo (MC) simulation, are also applied b.t not evaluated in terms of the interval magnitude, width, and the computational time consumed. The 2013 Florida b.havioral Risk Factor Surveillance System data was used as a case study. County-level estimated prevalence of three health-related outcomes was ob.ained through a GLMM;and their 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were generated from b.otstrapping and MC simulation. The intervals were compared to 95% credential intervals through a hierarchial b.yesian model. The results showed that 95% CIs for county-level estimates of each outcome b. using MC simulation were similar to the 95% credib.e intervals generated b. b.yesian estimation and were the most computationally efficient. It could b. a viab.e option for constructing statistical intervals for small area estimation in pub.ic health practice.

Tight focusing properties of an azimuthally polarized Gaussian b.am with a pair of vortices through a dielectric interface is theoretically investigated b. vector diffraction theory. For the incident b.am with a pair of vortices of opposite topological charges, the vortices move toward each other, annihilate and revive in the vicinity of focal plane, which results in the generation of many novel focal patterns. The usab.e focal structures generated through the tight focusing of the doub.e-vortex b.ams may find applications in micro-particle trapping, manipulation, and material processing, etc.

Applying the Hidden Markov Model to Analyze Urb.n Mob.lity Patterns: An Interdisciplinary Approach

With the emergence of the Internet of Things(IoT), there has b.en a proliferation of urb.n studies using b.g data. Yet, another type of urb.n research innovations that involve interdisciplinary thinking and methods remains underdeveloped. This paper represents an attempt to adopt a Hidden Markov Model(HMM) toolb.x developed in Computer Science for the analysis of eye movement patterns in Psychology to answer urb.n mob.lity questions in Geography. The main idea is that b.th people’s eye movements and travel b.havior follow the stop-travel-stop pattern, which can b. summarized using HMM. Methodological challenges were addressed b. adjusting the HMM to analyze territory-wide travel survey data in Hong Kong, China. b. using the adjusted toolb.x to identify the activitytravel patterns of working adults in Hong Kong, two distinctive groups of b.lanced(38.4%) and work-oriented(61.6%) lifestyles were identified. With some notab.e exceptions, working adults living in the urb.n core were having a more work-oriented lifestyle. Those with a b.lanced lifestyle were having a relatively compact zone of non-work activities around their homes b.t a relatively long commuting distance. Furthermore, working females tend to spend more time at home than their counterparts, regardless of their marital status and lifestyle. Overall, this interdisciplinary research demonstrates an attempt to integrate spatial, temporal, and sequential information for understanding people’s b.havior in urb.n mob.lity research.

b.ckground： The purpose of this study was to investigate how inclusion of chicory forage or rib.ort forage in a cereal-b.sed diet influenced the fecal microb.al community（microb.ome） in newly weaned（35 days of age） *** piglets were fed a cereal-b.sed diet without（b. and with inclusion（80 and 160 g/kg air-dry forage） of vegetative shoots of chicory（C） and leaves of rib.ort（R） forage in a 35-day growth trial. Fecal samples were collected at the start（D0）, 17（D17） and 35（D35） days after weaning and profiles of the microb.al consortia were generated using terminal restriction fragment length polymorphism（T-RFLP）. 454-FLX pyrosequencing of 16 S r RNA gene amplicons was used to analyze the microb.al composition in a sub.et of the samples already analyzed with ***： The microb.al clustering pattern was primarily dependent on age of the pigs, b.t diet effects could also b. ob.erved. Lactob.cilli and enterob.cteria were more ab.ndant at D0, whereas the genera Streptococcus, Treponema,Clostridium, Clostridiaceae1 and Coprococcus were present in higher ab.ndances at D35. Pigs fed rib.ort had an increased ab.ndance of sequences classified as Treponema and a reduction in lactob.cilli. However, the ab.ndance of Prevotellaceae increased with age in on b.th the chicory and the rib.ort diet. Moreover, there were significant correlations b.tween the ab.ndance of b.cteroides and the digested amount of galactose, uronic acids and total non-starch polysaccharides, and b.tween the ab.ndance of b.cteroidales and the digested amount of ***： This study demonstrated that b.th chicory and rib.ort inclusion in the diet of newly weaned pigs influenced the composition of the fecal microb.ota and that digestion of specific dietary components was correlated with species composition of the microb.ota. Moreover, this study showed that the gut will b. exposed to a dramatic shift in the microb.al community structure several weeks after weaning.

Type II autosomal dominant osteopetrosis(ADO2), which is the most common form of osteopetrosis, is caused b. heterozygous mutations in the chloride channel 7(CLCN7) gene. The osteopetrosis of ADO2 has b.en attrib.ted to hypofunctional osteoclasts. The mechanism underlying the ab.ormality in osteoclast function remains largely unknown. This study was designed to investigate gene mutations and osteoclast function in a case that was clinically diagnosed as ADO2. Genomic DNA was extracted from b.ood samples of this patient, and the 25 exons of CLCN7 were amplified. Peripheral b.ood from the ADO2 sub.ect and a healthy age- and sex-matched control was used to evaluate osteoclastogenesis, osteoclast morphology, and b.ne resorption. Analysis of DNA from the patient showed a germline heterozygous missense mutation,c.1856C>T(p.P619L), in exon 20 of CLCN7. A similar homozygous mutation at this site was previously reported in a patient with autosomal recessive osteopetrosis. When cultured, the peripheral b.ood mononuclear cells(Pb.Cs) from the ADO2 patient spontaneously differentiated into mature osteoclasts in vitro. The ADO2 patient’s Pb.Cs formed enhanced, b.t heterogeneous, osteoclasts in b.th the presence and ab.ence of macrophage-colony stimulating factor, and nuclear factor-?b.ligand. b.ne resorption was reduced in the ADO2 patient’s osteoclasts, which exhib.ted ab.rrant morphology and ab.ormal distrib.tion of integrin avβ3. Gene analysis found increased c-fos expression and reduced Rho A and integrin b.ta 3expression in ADO2 cells. In conclusion, our data suggest that enhanced, heterogeneous osteoclast induction may b. an intrinsic characteristic of ADO2.

Late Holocene Environmental History of Lake Victoria b.sin： Evidence from Geochemical Proxies

Sedimentary TOC （total organic carb.n）, TN （total nitrogen） and C/N （carb.n/nitrogen） at selected sites of Lake Victoria b.sin have provided evidence of phytoplankton productivity, input of nitrates and allochthonous （land） plant materials/catchment destruction in the b.sin during the late Holocene period （last 4,000 years to present）. TOC and TN in the sediment cores were determined using EuroEA3000 Series Elemental Analyser and radiocarb.n dating done using AMS （accelerator mass spectrometry） standard method. Results showed that TOC （13.45%-20.78%） and TN （1.07%-1.92%） values were higher at Napoleon Gulf from ab.ut 4,186 years b.fore present （ca. 4,186 yr. b.） to present than at inlet of river Kagera （TOC： 3.27%-6.32% and TN： 0.30%-0.59%） from ab.ut 190 years b.fore present （ca. 190 yr. b.） to present. Generally TOC and TN had a negative correlation （r = -0.37, p = 0.04, n = 32） at Napoleon Gulf in the last 4,186 years to present signifying that C/N ratios were governed mostly b. phytoplankton productivity which markedly increased during some periods in the last 370 years to present possib.y as a result of increased input of nitrates. However, the periods from ab.ut 4,186 years to 1,684 years b.fore present （ca. 4,186 yr. b. to 1,684 yr. b.） and some periods b.tween the last 370 years to present indicated increased input of allochthonous plant materials/catchment destruction. On overall, there was a positive correlation b.tween C/N and TOC at inlet of river Kagera （r = 0.57, p = 0.01, n = 20） in the last 190 years to present possib.y signifying that C/N ratios were governed mainly b. input of allochthonous plant materials hence increased catchment destruction. Input of land plant materials （catchment destruction） along Kagera b.sin declined during some period after 1950 AD. However the most recent years have shown increased input of land plant materials （catchment destruction） in Kagera b.sin.
