A series of MgO nanoparticles were prepared by first precipitating and isolating Mg(OH)2 nanoparticles from Mg(NO3)2 at three different temperatures using NaOH followed by their thermal decomposition also at three temperature settings. The effects of temperature at which precipitation and thermal decomposition of the hydroxide occurred were studied to assess their influence on nanoparticle size and surface area. The synthesised nanoparticles were characterized using a suite of techniques including Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) and Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) analysis. The average diameter range of MgO nanoparticles ranged between 15 and 35 nm, while for the precursor Mg(OH)2 it varied between 28 and 45 nm. The nanoparticle surface area obtained from BET studies was found in all cases to increase from 77 to 106.4 m2/g with increasing temperature of precipitation. Antibacterial activities of the prepared Mg(OH)2 and MgO nanoparticles were evaluated against the Gram-negative bacteria, Escherichia coli, and the Gram-positive bacteria, Staphylococcus aureus, using agar diffusion method. A correlation between surface area and antibacterial activity supported the mechanism of bacterial inactivation as the generation of reactive species. The Mg(OH)2 and MgO nanoparticles both exhibited pronounced bactericidal activity towards the Gram positive bacteria than Gram negative bacteria as indicated by the extend of the zone of inhibition around the nanoparticle.

Antiplatelet aggregation activity of some ferrocenylphenylimine compounds

Platelet hyper-aggregability triggered death and disability due to cardiovascular diseases is increasing worldwide and becoming a global concern. Therefore, it is necessary to synthesize newer drugs for the management of platelet aggregation. In this study, we investigated the antiplatelet aggregation activity of a novel series of ferrocenylimine compounds(3–10), N-(3-nitro-2-hydroxylbenzylidene)-3-ferrocenylimine(3), N-(3-bromo-2-hydroxylbenzylidene)-3-ferrocenylimine(4), N-(3-bromo-5-chlorosalicylidene)-3-ferrocenylimine(5), N-(ferrocenylformidene)-3-ferrocenylimine(6), N-(3-nitro-2-hydroxylbenzylidene)-4-ferrocenylimine(7), N-(3-bromo-2-hydroxylbenzylidene)-4-ferrocenylimine(8), N-(3-bromo-5-chlorosalicyl)-4-ferrocenylimine(9), N-(ferrocenylformidene)-4-ferrocenylimine(10) on thrombin-and ADP-induced platelet aggregation. The synthesized ferrocenylimine compounds(3–10) were found to exhibit higher antiplatelet aggregation activity than their precursors, which are 3-ferrocenylaniline(compound 1) and 4-ferrocenylaniline(compound 2). Among the derivatives, compounds 5, 6 and 10 possessed excellent platelet aggregation inhibition against the agonists.

Introduction: Modern family planning methods (MFPM) prevent unwanted pregnancies, reduce fertility rate, and increase the interval between pregnancies. They prevent pregnancy by preventing fertilization or implantation of the fertilized ovum. MFPM include tubal ligation (TL), vasectomy, oral contraceptive pills, the intrauterine contraceptive device (IUCD), depot injections, sub-dermal implants, and male and female condoms. Objective: To determine the level of knowledge of modern family planning methods (MFPM) among women of reproductive age (18 - 49 years) at the Mathari North Health Center in Nairobi County, Kenya. Methods: The study conducted among women of reproductive age at Mathare North Health Center in Nairobi was a cross-sectional descriptive survey between March 2016 and November 2018. It provided both qualitative and quantitative data. The sample size comprised of 274 women of reproductive age, i.e. (18 - 49 years) attending antenatal and postnatal clinics at the facility. Those excluded were women below 18 years of age, as they could not give consent according to Kenyan Laws. The data were collected using an interviewer-administered structured questionnaire, which consisted of socio-demographic and characteristics, knowledge of modern family planning methods and distance from the facility. Likert scale was used to ensure that data was tabulated on daily basis and subjected to statistical manipulation using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS). Results: The four leading MFPM in use in order of acceptability were injectables, implants, intrauterine contraceptive device and pills in that order. 91% of respondents were aware or had heard about modern family planning methods. Level of education of mother and father were the two variables that influenced the uptake of MFPM with p-values of 0.0260 and 0.025, respectively. The study further found that knowledge of MFP
