Perovskite LaCoo_(3) is being increasingly explored as an effective low-cost electrocatalyst for the oxygen evolution reaction(oER).Sr doping in LaCoo_(3)(La1-xSrxCoo_(3))has been found to substantially increase its catalytic *** this work,we report a detailed study on the evolution of the electronic structure of La1-xSrxCoo_(3) with 0≤x≤1 and its correlation with electrocatalytic activity for the oER.A combination of X-ray photoemission spectroscopy(XPS)and X-ray absorption spectroscopy(XAS)was used to unravel the electronic density of states(DoS)near the Fermi level(EF),which provide insights into the key electronic structure features for the enhanced oER catalytic *** analysis on the Co L-edge XAS suggest that LaCoo_(3) has a low spin state with t_(2g)^(6) e_(g)^(0) configuration at room *** implies that the high oER catalytic activity of LaCoo_(3) should not be rationalized by the occupancy of eg=1 *** Sr^(2+) for La^(3+) in LaCoo_(3) induces Co4+oxidation states and effectively dopes hole states into the top of valence band.A semiconductor-to-metal transition is observed for x>0.2,due to the holeinduced electronic DoS at the EF and increased hybridization between Co 3 d and o 2 *** an electronic modulation enhances the surface adsorption of the*oH intermediate and reduces the energy barrier for interfacial charge transfer,thus improving the oER catalytic activity in La_(1-x)Sr_(x)Coo_(3).In addition,we found that the La_(1-x)Sr_(x)Coo_(3) surface undergoes amorphization after certain period of oER measurement,leading to a partial deactivation of the *** Sr doping levels accelerated the amorphization process.

Specific detection of the floodwater mosquitoes Aedes sticticus and Aedes vexans DNA in predatory diving beetles

Floodwater mosquitoes （Diptera： Culicidae） are associated with periodically flooded wet meadows, marshes, and swamps in floodplains of major rivers worldwide, and their larvae are abundant in the shallow parts of flooded areas. The nuisance caused by the blood-seeking adult female mosquitoes motivates mosquito control. Larviciding with Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis is considered the most environmentally safe method. However, some concern has been raised whether aquatic predatory insects could be indi- rectly affected by this reduction in a potential vital prey. Top predators in the temporary wetlands in the River Dal/ilven floodplains are diving beetles （Coleoptera： Dytiscidae）, and Aedes sticticus andAe, vexans are the target species for mosquito control. For detailed stud- ies on this aquatic predator-prey system, we developed a polymerase chain reaction （PCR） assay for detection of mosquito DNA in the guts of medinm-sized diving beetles. Primers were designed for amplifying short mitochondrial DNA fragments of the cytochrome C oxidase subunit I （CoI） gene in Ae. sticticus and Ae. vexans, respectively. Primer speci- ficity was confirmed and half-life detectability ofAe. sticticus DNA in diving beetle guts was derived from a feeding and digestion experiment. The Ae. sticticus DNA within diving beetle guts was detected up to 12 h postfeeding, and half-life detectability was estimated to 5.6 h. In addition, field caught diving beetles were screened for Ae. sticticus and Ae. vexans DNA and in 14% of the diving beetles one or both mosquito species were detected, showing that these mosquito species are utilized as food by the diving beetles.

Lattice distortion releasing local surface strain on high-entropy alloys

High-entropy alloys(HEAs)have the potential to be a paradigm-shift for rational catalyst discovery but this new type of alloy requires a completely new approach to predict the surface *** addition to the ligand effect perturbing the surface–adsorbate bond,the random configuration of elements in the surface will also induce local strain effects due to the varying radii of neighboring *** modelling of HEA surface reactivity requires an estimate of this effect:To what degree is the adsorption of intermediates on these lattice distorted atomic environments affected by local strain?In this study,more than 3,500 density functional theory(DFT)calculated adsorption energies of*oH and*o adsorbed on the HEAs IrPdPtRhRu and AgAuCuPdPt are statistically analyzed with respect to the lattice constants of the alloys and the surfaces of each individual binding *** is found that the inherent distortion of the lattice structure in HEAs releases the local strain effect on the adsorption energy as the atomic environment surrounding the binding atom(s)settles into a relaxed *** is even observed to be true for clusters of atoms of which the sizes deviate significantly from the atomic environment in which they are *** elucidates an important aspect of binding site interaction with the neighboring atoms and thus constitutes a step towards a more accurate theoretical model of estimating the reactivity of HEA surfaces.

Ultra-low temperature cofired ceramics based on Li_(2)Wo_(4)as perspective substrate materials for terahertz frequencies

With the development of low dielectric permittivity materials having an ultra-low sintering temperature,testing their dielectric properties at terahertz frequencies suitable for 6G communication systems and implementation of the fabricated materials in ultra-low temperature cofired ceramics(ULTCC)were the main goals of the *** tungstate Li_(2)Wo_(4)was synthesized by a solid-state reaction and used for the preparation of green tapes and test structures with cofired internal conductive layers,which are destined for substrates of microwave and submillimeter wave *** behavior,thermal effects,and mass changes of the green tapes during heating were studied using a hot-stage microscope,differential thermal analysis,and thermogravimetry.A single-phase composition was revealed for being undoped and doped with AlF3–CaB_(4)o_(7)*** impact of frequency,temperature,the addition of AlF3–CaB_(4)o_(7)and CuBi_(2)o_(4)dopants,and sintering temperature was the subject of in-depth characterization of dielectric properties in a terahertz region.A glass-free composition,ultra-low sintering temperature of 590–630℃,low roughness of the green tapes,dense microstructure,compatibility with Ag conductors,low and stable dielectric permittivity of 5.0–5.8 in a broad range of 0.2–2 THz,and low dielectric loss of 0.008–0.01 at 1 THz are the main advantages of the developed ULTCC substrates.

The vitality of European forests continues to decline due to new pests and diseases,climate-change related disturbances and high loads of atmospheric nitrogen *** soil health is a major factor underpinning the low vitality of West-European *** tree species with soil ameliorative traits is proposed as an avenue to counteract soil acidification and improve overall forest *** we evaluate the impact of black cherry(Prunus serotina Ehrh.),a known rich litter species,on the vitality of neighboring pedunculate oak(Quercus robur L.)in ten mixed forests on sand in Germany,Belgium and the *** found that black cherry admixture increases foliar N and P to a surplus whereas it causes deficiencies in foliar Mg,thereby resulting in an overall negative effect on oak foliar nutrient ***,defoliation of oak leaves by herbivory decreases with the proximity of black *** structural equation modelling(SEM),we tested the hypothesized‘improved soil health’*** analyses showed that black cherry admixture leads to lower accumulation in the humus layer,resulting in higher soil base saturation which has a positive effect on foliar Ca yet a negative effect on total ***,the SEM illustrated that herbivory of oak leaves decreases when black cherry is admixed,both via dilution and improved soil *** effects of black cherry on oak vitality via“improved soil health”in our SEM are however small in comparison to direct ***,our study showed that the combined positive and negative impacts of black cherry on oak vitality are limited,which tempers the potential benefits of using the rich litter species to counteract oak decline via improved soil health–yet,the concern of black cherry as an invasive alien species negatively affecting the vitality of mature pedunculate oak trees may also be exaggerated.

Elucidation of a reaction mechanism is the most critical aspect for designing electrodes for highperformance secondary ***,we investigate the sodium insertion/extraction into an iron fluoride hydrate(FeF_(3)·0.5H_(2)o)electrode for sodium-ion batteries(SIBs).The electrode material is prepared by employing an ionic liquid 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium-tetrafluoroborate,which serves as a reaction medium and precursor for F^(-)*** crystal structure of FeF_(3)·0.5H_(2)o is observed as pyrochlore type with large open 3-D tunnels and a unit cell volume of 1129A^(3).The morphology of FeF_(3)·0.5H_(2)o is spherical shape with a mesoporous *** microstructure analysis reveals primary particle size of around 10 *** FeF_(3)·0.5H_(2)o cathode exhibits stable discharge capacities of 158,210,and 284 mA h g^(-1) in three different potential ranges of 1.5-4.5,1.2-4.5,and 1.0-4.5 V,respectively at 0.05 C *** specific capacities remained stable in over 50 cycles in all three potential ranges,while the rate capability was best in the potential range of 1.5-4.5 *** electrochemical sodium storage mechanism is studied using X-ray absorption spectroscopy,indicating higher conversion at a more discharged ***-situ M?ssbauer spectroscopy strengthens the results for reversible reduction/oxidation of *** results will be favorable to establish high-performance cathode materials with selective voltage window for SIBs.
