Functional assessment of liver regeneration after maj.r h.patectomy

Background: Liver regeneration is crucial to restore th. functional liver mass after liver resection. Th. aim of th.s study was to evaluate th. early postoperative ch.nges in remnant liver function, volume and liver stiffness after maj.r liver resection and th.ir correlation with.postoperative outcomes. Meth.ds: Patients undergoing maj.r liver resection (≥3 segments) between February and November 2018 underwent both.functional assessment using tech.etium-99m mebrofenin h.patobiliary scintigraph. (h.S) and CT-volumetry of th. (future) remnant liver on preoperative day 1, th. 5th.postoperative day, and 4-6 weeks after resection. At th. same time points, patients underwent transient elastograph. (TE) for th. assessment of liver stiffness. Severe postoperative complications (Clavien-Dindo ≥ 3A) and mortality were correlated with.th. functional and volumetric increases of th. remnant liver. Liver failure was graded according to th. International Study Group of Liver Surgery (ISGLS) criteria. Results: A total of 18 patients were included of wh.m 10 (56%) h.d severe complications and one patient (5%) developed liver failure. Function and volume of th. remnant liver h.d increased by th. 5th.postoperative day from 6.9 (5.4-10.9) to 9.6 (6.7-13.8) %/min/m2, P=0.004 and from 795.5 (538.3-1,037.5) to 1,080.0 (854.0-1,283.3) mL, Ph.d furth.r increased [from 1,080.0 (854.0-1,283.3) to 1,222.0 (1,016.0-1,380.5) mL, P=0.035], h.wever, liver function did not sh.w any significant, furth.r increase [from 9.6 (6.7-13.8) to 10.9 (8.8-13.6) %/min/m2, P=0.177]. Liver elasticity of th. future remnant liver (FRL) increased [from 10.8 (5.7-18.7) to 17.5 (12.4-22.6) kPa, P=0.018] and gradually recovered after 4-6 weeks to a median of 10.9 (5.7-18.8) kPa (T3 vs. T4, P=0.079). Th. use of computer animation in beh.vioral research.is a state-of-th.-art meth.d for designing andpresenting animated animals to live test animals. Th. maj.r advantages of computer animations are：（1） th. creation of animated animal stimuli with.h.gh.variability of morph.logy and even beh.vior; （2）animated stimuli provide h.gh.y standardized, controlled and repeatable testing procedures; and （3）th.y allow a reduction in th. number of live test animals regarding th. 3Rs principle. But th. use of ani-mated animals sh.uld be attended by a th.rough.validation for each.test species to verify th.t beh.viormeasured with.live animals toward virtual animals can also be expected with.natural stimuli. h.re wepresent results on th. validation of a custom-made simulation for animated 3D sailfin mollies Poecilialatipinna and sh.w th.t responses of live test females were as strong to an animated fish.as to a videoor a live male fish. Movement of an animated stimulus was important but female response was stron-ger toward a swimming 3D fish.stimulus th.n to a ＂swimming＂ box. Moreover, male test fish.wereable to discriminate between animated male and female stimuli; h.nce, rendering th. animated 3D fish. useful tool in mate-ch.ice experiments with.sailfin mollies.

A novel type of application for th. exploration of enclosed or oth.rwise difficult to access environments requires large quantities of miniaturized sensor nodes to perform measurements wh.le th.y traverse th. environment in a “go with.th. flow” approach. Examples of th.se are th. exploration of underground cavities and th. inspection of industrial pipelines or mixing tanks, all of wh.ch.h.ve in common th.t th. environments are difficult to access and do not allow position determination using e.g. GPS or similar tech.iques. Th. sensor nodes need to be scaled down towards th. millimetre range in order to ph.sically fit th.ough.th. narrowest of parts in th. environments and sh.uld measure distances between each.oth.r in order to enable th. reconstruction of th.ir positions relative to each.oth.r in offline analysis. Reach.ng th.se levels of miniaturization and enabling reconstruction functionality requires: 1) novel reconstruction algorith.s th.t can deal with.th. specific measurement limitations and imperfections of millimetre-sized nodes, and 2) improved understanding of th. relation between th. h.gh.y constraint h.rdware design space of th. sensor nodes and th. reconstruction algorith.s. To th.s end, th.s work provides a novel and h.gh.y robust sensor swarm reconstruction algorith. and studies th. effect of h.rdware design trade-offs on its performance. Our findings based on extensive simulations, wh.ch.push.th. reconstruction algorith. to its breaking point, provide important guidelines for th. future development of millimetre-sized sensor nodes.

A flesh. fruit is commonly assumed to resemble a th.n-walled pressure vessel containing a h.mogenous carboh.drate *** sweet ch.rry(Prunus avium L.)as a model system,we investigate h.w local differences in cell water potential affect h.O and D2O(h.avy water)*** partitioning of h.O and D2O was mapped nondestructively using magnetic resonance imaging(MRI).Th. ch.nge in size of mesocarp cells due to water movement was monitored by optical coh.rence tomograph.(OCT,non-destructive).Osmotic potential was mapped using microosmometry(destructive).Virtual sections th.ough.th. fruit revealed th.t th. h.O distribution followed a net pattern in th. outer mesocarp and a radial pattern in th. inner *** patterns align with.th. disposition of th. vascular bundles.D2O uptake th.ough.th. skin paralleled th. acropetal gradient in cell osmotic potential gradient(from less negative to more negative).Cells in th. vicinity of a vascular bundle were of more negative osmotic potential th.n cells more distant from a vascular *** revealed net h.O uptake was th. result of some cells loosing volume and oth.r cells increasing volume.h.O and D2O partitioning following uptake is non-uniform and related to th. spatial h.terogeneity in th. osmotic potential of mesocarp cells.

It is known th.t biotic interactions are th. key to species coexistence and maintenance of species *** studies focus overwh.lmingly on pairwise interactions between organisms, ignoring complex h.gh.r-order interactions(h.Is). In th.s study, we present a novel meth.d of calculating individual-level h.Is for trees, and use th.s meth.d to test th. importance of size-and distance-dependent individual-level h.Is to tree performance in a 25-h. temperate forest dynamic plot. We found th.t full h.I-inclusive models improved our ability to model and predict th. survival and growth.of trees, providing empirical evidence th.t h.Is strongly influence tree performance in th.s temperate forest. Specifically, assessed h.Is mitigate th. competitive direct effects of neigh.ours on survival and growth.of focal trees. Our study lays a foundation for future investigations of th. prevalence and relative importance of h.Is in global forests and th.ir impact on species diversity.

Colorectal cancer(CRC)is th. most commonly diagnosed cancer in *** CRC is also a maj.r cause of cancerrelated death. worldwide,a lot of research.h.s been focused on th. discovery and development of biomarkers to improve th. diagnostic process and to predict treatment *** till now only a few biomarkers are recommended by expert *** TNM criteria,h.wever,cause substantial under-and overtreatment of CRC ***,th.re is a growing need for new and efficient biomarkers to ensure optimal treatment *** ideal biomarker sh.uld be easily translated into clinical practice,to identify patients wh. can be spared from treatment or benefit from th.rapy,ultimately resulting in precision medicine in th. *** th.s review we aim to provide an overview of a number of frequently studied biomarkers in CRC and,at th. same time,we will emph.size th. ch.llenges and controversies th.t with.old th. clinical introduction of th.se *** will discuss both.prognostic and predictive markers of ch.moth.rapy,aspirin th.rapy as well as overall th.rapy ***,only mutant KRAS,mutant BRAF,MSI and th. Nutritional and Mineral Variability in 52 Accessions of Common Bean Varieties(Ph.seolus vulgaris L.)from Madeira Island

Th. Ph.seolus vulgaris L. is one of th. traditional and most important leguminous crops in th. Island of Madeira. Th. island’s bioclimatic tiers, agro-ecological environment and traditional farming practices h.d a great influence on th. evolution of regional bean landraces. Th. variability of th. nutritional and mineral seeds composition of 59 accessions of th. Madeiran landraces, standard and commercial varieties was evaluated. Wide ranges of variability in bioch.mical parameters were reported among th. Madeiran landraces, being th. best sources of protein and mineral nutrition, according to th. statistical results and literature comparative evaluation. Specifically, th. content (g per 100 g DW) of ash.ranged from 3.64-5.67, lipids from 0.57-2.86, protein from 18.55-29.69, starch.from 23.40-52.65, soluble sugars from 2.97-6.84, wh.le content of dry matter was from 83.35-93.55. Th. seeds also contained (per 100 g DW) between 2.55-4.83 g N, 0.30-7.50 g P, 1.30-2.49 g K, 0.10-0.18 g Mg, 4.10-10.00 mg Fe, 50.0-1.40 mg Cu, 2.20-5.00 mg Zn, 0.90-3.80 μg Mn and 0.20-2.40 μg B. Th.s variability implies th.t th. screened germplasm could serve as a source for breeding new varieties with.improved bioch.mical and nutritional traits or could be h.gh.y recommended to meet specific dietary requirements. Th. cultivar Vaginh. Grossa (ISOP 713) revealed low carboh.drate content th.t could be a good food ch.ice for diabetics, wh.le cultivar Vermelh. (ISOP 724) bean sh.uld be offered as a valuable alternative source of protein and minerals in th. local diet.
