Interplay of Adsorbate-Adsorbate and Adsorbate-Substrate Interactions in Self-Assembled Molecular Surface Nanostructures

The adsorption of 2,6-naphthalenedicarboxylic acid(NDCA)molecules on the Ag(110),Cu(110),and Ag(111)surfaces at room temperature has been studied by means of scanning tunnelling microscopy(STM).Further supporting results were obtained using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS)and soft X-ray absorption spectroscopy(XAS).On the Ag(110)support,which had an average terrace width of only 15 nm,the NDCA molecules form extended one-dimensional(1-D)assemblies,which are oriented perpendicular to the step edges and have lengths of several hundred *** shows that the assemblies have a large tolerance to monatomic surface steps on the Ag(110)*** observed behaviour is explained in terms of strong intermolecular hydrogen bonding and a strong surface-mediated directionality,assisted by a sufficient degree of molecular backbone *** contrast,the same kind of step-edge crossing is not observed when the molecules are adsorbed on the isotropic Ag(111)or more reactive Cu(110)*** Ag(111),similar 1-D assemblies are formed to those on Ag(110),but they are oriented along the step *** Cu(110),the carboxylic groups of NDCA are deprotonated and form covalent bonds to the surface,a situation which is also achieved on Ag(110)by annealing to 200°*** results show that the formation of particular self-assembled molecular nanostructures depends significantly on a subtle balance between the adsorbate-adsorbate and adsorbate-substrate interactions and that kinetic factors play an important role.

Patients with inflammatory bowel disease have increased risk of autoimmune and inflammatory diseases

AIM To investigate whether immune mediated diseases(IMD) are more frequent in patients with inflammatory bowel disease(IBD).METHODS In this population based registry study,a total of 47325 patients with IBD were alive and registered in the Danish National Patient Registry on December 16,2013. Controls were randomly selected from the Danish Civil Registration System(CRS) and matched for sex,age,and municipality. We used ICD 10 codes to identify the diagnoses of the included patients. The IBD population was divided into three subgroups: Ulcerative colitis(UC),Crohn's disease(CD) and Both the latter referring to those registered with both diagnoses. Subsequently,odds-ratios(OR) and 95%CI were obtained separately for each group and their respective controls. The use of Bonferoni post-test correction adjusted the significance level to P < 0.00125. P-values were estimated using Fisher's exact *** There were significantly more women than men in the registry,and a greater percentage of comorbidity in the IBD groups(P < 0.05). Twenty different IMDs were all significantly more frequent in the IBD group. Sixteen were associated with UC versus twelve with CD. In both UC and CD ORs were significantly increased(P < 0.00125) for primary sclerosing cholangitis(PSC),celiac disease,type 1 diabetes(T1D),sarcoidosis,asthma,iridocyclitis,psoriasis,pyoderma gangrenosum,rheumatoid arthritis,and ankylosing spondylitis. Restricted to UC(P < 0.00125) were autoimmune hepatitis,primary biliary cholangitis,Grave's disease,polymyalgia rheumatica,temporal arteritis,and atrophic gastritis. Restricted to CD(P < 0.00125) were psoriatic arthritis and episcleritis. Restricted to women with UC(P < 0.00125) were atrophic gastritis,rheumatoid arthritis,temporal arteritis,and polymyalgia rheumatica. Restricted to women with CD were episcleritis,rheumatoid arthritis,and psoriatic arthritis. The only disease restricted to men(P < 0.00125) was sarcoidosis. Phylogeny of the Acarosporaceae(Lecanoromycetes,Ascomycota,Fungi)and the evolution of carbonized ascomata

The phylogeny of the Acarosporaceae(Lecanoromycetes,Acarosporomycetidae,Acarosporales)is investigated using data from three molecular markers;nuclear ITS-LSU rDNA,mitochondrial SSU andβ-*** is shown to be constituted by six main clades;Myriospora,Timdalia,Pleopsidium,a clade composed by BAcarospora^rhizobola and BA.^terricola,the poorly supported Sarcogyne clade(including several Polysporina and Acarospora species)and the Acarospora clade(including the type of Polysporina,***,and several other Polysporina species).The common ancestor of the Acarosporaceae did not produce strongly black pigmented(carbonized or melanized)ascomata,but this trait has arisen secondarily and independently numerous times in the evolution of the *** number of changes in character states of both carbonized epihymenium and carbonized exciple are considerably more than the minimum *** genera Sarcogyne and Polysporina—largely circumscribed based on the presence of black pigmented ascomata—are shown to be distinctly *** presence of green algae in the ascoma margin(lecanorine or lecideine ascomata)may vary even within single species.
