A systematic scoping review of study methodology for randomized controlled trials investigating probiotics in athletic and physically active populations

Background:The purported ergogenic and health effects of probiotics have been a topic of great intrigue among researchers,practitioners,and the lay public *** has also been an increased research focus within the realm of sports science and exercise medicine on the athletic gut ***,compared to other ergogenic aids and dietary supplements,probiotics present unique study *** objectives of this systematic scoping review were to identify and characterize study methodologies of randomized controlled trials investigating supplementation with probiotics in athletes and physically active ***:Four databases(MeDLINe,CINAHL,Cochrane CeNTRAL,and Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews)were searched for randomized controlled studies involving healthy athletes or physically active *** intervention with probiotics and inclusion of a control and/or placebo group were *** peer-reviewed articles in english were considered,and there were no date *** were extracted and presented in tabular form to detail study protocols,characteristics,and *** in randomized controlled trials was determined with the RoB 2.0 ***:A total of 45 studies were included in the review,with 35 using a parallel group design and 10 using a cross-over *** half the studies used a single probiotic and the other half a multi-strain *** probiotic dose ranged from 2×10^(8)to 1×10^(11)colony forming units daily,and the length of intervention was betw.e. 7 and 150 *** than half the studies directly assessed gastrointestinal symptoms,gut permeability,or the gut *** sex ratio of participants was heavily weighted toward males,and only 3 studies exclusively investigated ***-level adverse events were reported in only 2 studies,although the methodology of reporting varied *** risk of bias was generally low,although details on randomization were lacking in some s

For decades,researchers have known that w.e. neurons lose their activating inputs,they can atrophy and even *** example,removing sensory nerve inputs from the arm to the spinal cord after amputation or cutting the spinal nerves can shrink the post-synaptic target zones(e.g.,woods et al.,2000).From touch receptors for the hand and arm,primary nerve afferents enter the spinal cord,and axons travel in the dorsal columns to target the cuneate nucleus(Cu)of the brainstem on the same side of the body(Figure 1).w.e. sensory loss is unilateral,the overw.e.ming result is for the associated primary target zone to shrink in total size(cross-sectional area),as compared to the size of the opposite side.

Purpose:This paper presents an update of the 2011 w.e.lchair Compendium of Physical Activities designed for w.e.lchair users and is referred to as the 2024 w.e.lchair *** w.e.lchair Compendium aims to curate existing know.e.ge of the energy expenditure for w.e.lchair physical activities(PAs).Methods:A systematic review of the published energy expenditure of PA for w.e.lchair users was completed betw.e. 2011 and May *** added these data to the 2011 w.e.lchair Compendium data that was compiled previously in a systematic review through ***:A total of 47 studies were included,and 124 different w.e.lchair PA reported energy expenditure values ranging from 0.8 metabolic equivalents for w.e.lchair users(filing papers,light effort)to 11.8 metabolic equivalents for w.e.lchair users(Nordic sit skiing).Conclusion:In introducing the updated 2024 w.e.lchair Compendium,we hope to bridge the resource gap and challenge the prevailing narratives that inadvertently exclude w.e.lchair users from physical fitness and health PAs.

Soil water retention curves（SwRCs） provide an important means of describing the response of unsaturated soils during drying / wetting processes in terms of variations of degree of saturation, water content or void ratio with suction. A key consideration in generating these curves is how to measure the suction. Frequently the filter paper technique is adopted, especially w.e. high suctions are developed, e.g. with plastic clays. As each measurement takes at least a w.e. with this technique, it can take months or years to generate a full SwRC in drying and wetting. Developments in laboratory tensiometers now allow matrix suctions up to about 1.5 MPa to be measured. with such a device it is possible to develop SwRCs for granular soils such as silts and clays in hours or days by continuous measurement. This paper describes an experimental set-up that was developed to measure changes in volume, water content and matrix suction during drying of three granular soils. Limitations of the apparatus and usefulness of the curves are discussed.

3D printing in additive manufacturing is con-sidered as one of key technologies to the future high-pre-cision manufacturing in order to benefit diverse industriesin building construction, product development, biomedicalinnovation, etc. The increasing applications of 3D printedcomponents depend primarily on their significant merits ofreduced weight, minimum used materials, high precisionand shorter production time. Furthermore, it is very crucialthat such 3D printed components can maintain the same oreven better material performance and product quality asthose achieved by conventional manufacturing *** study successfully fabricated 3D printed mechanicaltesting samples of PLA and PLA/wood fibre composites.3D printing parameters including infill density, layer heightand the number of shells were investigated via design ofexperiments （DOe）, among which the number of shells wasdetermined as the most significant factor for maximisingtensile strengths of PLA samples. Further, Doe workevaluated the effect of material type （i.e., neat PLA andPLA/wood fibres） and the number of shells on tensile,flexural and impact strengths of material samples. It issuggested that material type is the only predominant factorfor maximising all mechanical strengths, which howeverare consistently lower for PLA/wood fibre compositesw.e. compared with those of neat PLA. Increasing thenumber of shells, on the other hand, has been found toimprove almost all strength levels and decrease infillcavities.

Coordinated investigations into the interactions betw.e. biologically mimicking(biomimetic)material constructs and stem cells advance the potential for the regeneration and possible direct replacement of diseased cells and *** clinically relevant therapies will require the development and optimization of methods that mass produce fully functional cells and *** advances in the design and synthesis of biomaterial scaffolds,one of the biggest obstacles facing tissue engineering is understanding how specific extracellular cues produced by biomaterial scaffolds influence the proliferation and differentiation of various cell *** elasticity is one such tailorable property of synthetic scaffolds that is known to differ betw.e. ***,we investigate the interactions betw.e. an elastically tailorable polyethylene glycol(PeG)-based hydrogel platform and human bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells(hMSCs).For these studies,two different hydrogel compositions with elastic moduli in the ranges of 50-60 kPa and 8-10 kPa were *** findings demonstrate that the different elasticities in this platform can produce changes in hMSC morphology and proliferation,indicating that the platform can be implemented to produce changes in hMSC behavior and cell state for a broad range of tissue engineering and regenerative ***,we show that the platform’s different elasticities influence stem cell differentiation potential,particularly w.e. promoting stem cell differentiation toward cell types from tissues with stiffer *** findings add to the evolving and expanding library of information on stem cell-biomaterial interactions and opens the door for continued exploration into PeG-based hydrogel scaffolds for tissue engineering and regenerative medicine applications.

we hypothesize that for disaster risk mitigation,many households,despite being aware of their risk and possible mitigation actions,never seriously consider doing anything about *** mitigation-focused decisions,since there is no equivalent to warning messages,the decision process is likely to evolve over an extended *** explore what activates hurricane mitigation protective action decisions through three research questions:(1)to what extent are homeow.e.s unengaged in protective action decision making?(2)what homeow.e. characteristics are associated with lack of engagement?And(3)to what extent do different life events trigger engagement in the decision-making process?we use the Precaution Adoption Process Model to conceptualize engagement as distinct from decision making;the broader protective action decision-making literature to explore drivers of engagement;and Life Course Theory to examine potential transitions from unengaged to *** use survey data of homeow.e.s in North Carolina to examine these questions *** suggest that one-third of respondents had never engaged in protective action decisions,that life experiences differ in their occurrence frequency and effect on households’mitigation decisions,and that some events,such as renovating,reroofing,or purchasing a home may offer critical moments that could be leveraged to encourage greater engagement in mitigation decision making.
