Accurate assessment of the probability of success in an aggressive confrontation with a conspecific is critical to the survival and fitness of the individuals. Various game theory models have examined these assessment strategies under the assumption that contests should favor the animal with the greater resource-holding potential （RHP）, body size typically being the proxy. Mutual assessment asserts that an individual can assess their own RHP relative to their opponent, allowing the inferior animal the chance to flee before incurring unnecessary costs. The model of self-determined persistence, however, assumes that an individual will fight to a set personal threshold, independ- ent of their opponent＇s RHP. Both models have been repeatedly tested using size as a proxy for RHP, with neither receiving unambiguous support. Here we present both morphological and neuro- physiological data from size-matched and mismatched stalk-eyed fly fights. We discovered differ- ing fighting strategies between winners and losers. Winners readily escalated encounters to higher intensity and physical contact and engaged in less low-intensity, posturing behaviors compared with losers. Although these fighting strategies were largely independent of size, they were associ- ated with elevated levels of 5-HT. Understanding the neurophysiological factors responsible for mediating the motivational state of opponents could help resolve the inconsistencies seen in cur- rent game theory models. Therefore, we contend that current studies using only size as a proxy for RHP may be inadequate in determining the intricacies of fighting ability and that future studies investigating assessment strategies and contest outcome should include neurophysiological data.

Crouzon syndrome is the result of a gain-of-function point mutation in FGFR2. Mimicking the human mutation, a mouse model of Crouzon syndrome(Fgfr2342Y) recapitulates patient deformities, including failed tracheal cartilage segmentation, resulting in a cartilaginous sleeve in the homozygous mutants. We found that the Fgfr2C342Y/C^342Y mutants exhibited an increase in chondrocytes prior to segmentation. This increase is due at least in part to over proliferation. Genetic ablation of chondrocytes in the mutant led to restoration of segmentation in the lateral but not central portion of the trachea. These results suggest that in the Fgfr2C342Y/C342Y mutants, increased cartilage cell proliferation precedes and contributes to the disruption of cartilage segmentation in the developing trachea.

Pyramiding disease resistance genes in elite winter wheat germplasm for Western Canada

We report on pyramiding different disease resistance genes against fungal pathogens in Canadian winter wheat germplasm based on available DnA markers and gene *** resistance represents a safe, economical and ecological method for protecting plants, growers and the health of consumers. Major diseases of wheat on the Canadian Prairies are common bunt, rusts(leaf, stem and stripe) and Fusarium head blight. Over the years markers for resistance genes against these diseases have been identified and used by the international wheat community. We describe markers that we have used to pyramid different resistance genes and indicate their presence in Canadian winter wheat cultivars issued from the winter wheat breeding program at the Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada,Lethbridge Research and Development Centre, the only winter wheat breeding program in Western Canada actively delivering new varieties for all regions of the Canadian *** sources of resistance and identities of PCR primers and amplification conditions are indicated to enable the transfer and pyramiding of different resistance(R) genes to breeding lines. We conclude by reviewing new tools for identifying R genes in wheat and indicate how mutagenesis and gene editing can help future efforts to extend the protection offered by known R genes.

AIM: To validate the Rockall scoring system for predicting outcomes of rebleeding, and the need for a surgical procedure and death. METHODS: We used data extracted from the Registry of Upper Gastrointestinal Bleeding and Endoscopy including information of 1869 patients with non-variceal upper gastrointestinal bleeding treated in Canadian hospitals. Risk scores were calculated and used to classify patients based on outcomes. For each outcome, we used χ2 goodness-of-fit tests to assess the degree of calibration, and built receiver operating characteristic curves and calculated the area under the curve (AUC) to evaluate the discriminative ability of the scoring system. RESULTS: For rebleeding, the χ2 goodness-of-fit test indicated an acceptable fit for the model [χ2 (8) = 12.83, P = 0.12]. For surgical procedures [χ2 (8) = 5.3, P = 0.73] and death [χ2 (8) = 3.78, P = 0.88], the tests showed solid correspondence between observed proportions and predicted probabilities. The AUC was 0.59 (95% CI: 0.55-0.62) for the outcome of rebleeding and 0.60 (95% CI: 0.54-0.67) for surgical procedures, representing apoor discriminative ability of the scoring system. For the outcome of death, the AUC was 0.73 (95% CI: 0.69-0.78), indicating an acceptable discriminative ability. COnCLUSIOn: The Rockall scoring system provides an acceptable tool to predict death, but performs poorly for endpoints of rebleeding and surgical procedures.

Background:This study examined the chemistry and biological effects of Costus speciosus(***)Sm.(***)which has been traditionally used by Sarawak natives to treat urological disorders for ***:This study assesses the efficacy of *** in treating urological disorders by investigating its effects on the contractility of isolated prostate glands since this is the most effective way to relieve lower urinary tract symptoms that accompany benign prostatic *** were collected and extracts of *** rhizome,root,leaf and stem were made using water at different ***:*** rhizome and root decoction(boiling,about 100℃)combination extract(2 mg/mL)inhibited electrical field stimulation-induced neurogenic contractions of isolated rat prostatic gland by 44±8%(p=0.01,n=4);whereas room temperature(about 20℃)rhizome and root combination extract inhibited electrical field stimulation contractions by 62±8%(p=0.003,n=4).*** rhizome(p=0.0004,n=6),root(pn=6)and stem(p=0.0057,n=6)room temperature extracts inhibited electrical field stimulation-induced contractions of rat prostatic smooth muscle but leaf extract did not(p=0.09,n=6).Contractions mediated by exogenous administration of noradrenaline,acetylcholine,adenosine 5’-triphosphate or tyramine were only weakly inhibited by rhizome *** of *** rhizome room temperature extract separated by preparative high-performance liquid chromatography and evaluated by isolated organ bath bioassay revealed that inhibitory activity of the extract was due to highly polar soluble components present in the ***:*** extracts exert a direct inhibitory effect on prostate tissue which is likely to be therapeutically beneficial in treating lower urinary tract symptoms associated with benign prostatic hyperplasia.
