Nano-additive manufacturing of multilevel strengthened aluminum matrix composites

Nanostructured materials are being actively developed,while it remains an open question how to rapidly scale them up to bulk engineering materials for broad industrial *** study propose an industrial approach to rapidly fabricate high-strength large-size nanostructured metal matrix composites and attempts to investigate and optimize the deposition process and strengthening ***,advanced nanocrystalline aluminum matrix composites(nanoAMCs)were assembled for the first time by a novel nano-additive manufacturing method that was guided by numerical simulations(*** in-flight particle model and the porefree deposition model).The present nanoAMC with a mean grain size<50 nm in matrix exhibited hardness eight times higher than the bulk aluminum and shows the highest hardness among all Al–Al2O3 composites reported to date in the literature,which are the outcome of controlling multiscale strengthening mechanisms from tailoring solution atoms,dislocations,grain boundaries,precipitates,and externally introduced reinforcing *** present high-throughput strategy and method can be extended to design and architect advanced coatings or bulk materials in a highly efficient(synthesizing a nanostructured bulk with dimensions of 50×20×4 mm^(3) in 9 min)and highly flexible(regulating the gradient microstructures in bulk)way,which is conducive to industrial production and application.

Auroral Kilometric Radiation (AKR) is a common radio emission,which can contribute to the magnetosphere-ionosphereatmosphere co u *** emissions have been observed in all magnetic planet magnetospheres of the solar *** this study,using observations from the FAST satellite from 30 August 1996 to 9 September 2001,the distribution of AKR in altitude=500-4500 km and invariant latitude (|ILAT|)=60°-80°has been analyzed.63045 AKR samples have been identified with~48%(52%) samples on the dayside (nightside).Of considerable interest,there is a distinct MLT asymmetry with the high occurrence rate in MLT=05-08 and 18-22(02-05 and 12-17) in the northern (southern) *** distinct MLT asymmetry is associated with the direction of Bxof the interplaneta ry magnetic *** addition,the occurrence rate on the nightside clearly increases as the AE^(*) index *** study further enriches the information and understanding of AKR in the magnetosphere as well as other similar radio emissions.

Performance effects of feed-borne Fusarium mycotoxins on broiler chickens: Influences of timing and duration of exposure

In commercial practice, broiler chickens may be exposed to Fusarium mycotoxins either during specific growth stages or throughout the entire production cycle. A 34-day feeding trial was conducted to identify sensitive periods for mycotoxin effects during the growth cycle of broiler chickens. A total of 420 newly-hatched Ross 308 male broilers were randomly assigned to 60 cages with 7 birds/cage. Sources of clean wheat(<0.5 mg/kg deoxynivalenol [DON]) and Fusarium-contaminated wheat(11.4 mg/kg DON)were used to formulate the starter diets(0.41 and 6.62 mg/kg DON) provided from 1 to 21 d of age and the grower diets(0.54 and 7.90 mg/kg DON) provided from 22 to 34 d. Control and DON diets were provided to broilers according to treatments(control, DON 1 to 14 d, DON 15 to 21 d, DON 22 to 34 d and DON 1 to 34 d). Birds were monitored daily for morbidity or mortality. Broiler growth performance(body weight, average daily gain, average daily feed intake and feed to gain ratio) was measured *** of duodenum, jejunum and ileum were collected at 21 and 34 d and morphometric parameters(villus height, crypt depth, villus width, muscularis thickness and villi:crypt ratio) were measured. Birds fed the DON starter diet during the first 14 d did not exhibit any changes in growth performance;however, growth performance was suppressed in birds fed DON-contaminated diets during the grower period(22 to 34 d). At 34 d, birds that received the DON grower diet(DON 22 to 34 d and DON 1 to 34 d)were lighter(1,433 vs. 1,695 g) than birds fed the control diet. Feed to gain ratio was higher in birds fed the DON grower diet from 22 to 28 d(1.77 vs. 1.56) and 28 to 34 d(2.24 vs. 1.85) compared with corresponding controls. These results suggest that providing older broiler chicks(22 to 34 d) feed contaminated with Fusarium mycotoxins(specifically DON) may result in production losses. Peripheral nerve injuries induce a severe motor and sensory deficit. Since the availability of autologous nerve transplants for nerve repair is very limited, alternative treatment strategies are sought, including the use of tubular nerve guidance conduits(tNGCs). However, the use of tNGCs results in poor functional recovery and central necrosis of the regenerating tissue, which limits their application to short nerve lesion defects(typically shorter than 3 cm). Given the importance of vascularization in nerve regeneration, we hypothesized that enabling the growth of blood vessels from the surrounding tissue into the regenerating nerve within the tNGC would help eliminate necrotic processes and lead to improved regeneration. In this study, we reported the application of macroscopic holes into the tubular walls of silk-based tNGCs and compared the various features of these improved silk^(+) tNGCs with the tubes without holes(silk^(–) tNGCs) and autologous nerve transplants in an 8-mm sciatic nerve defect in rats. Using a combination of micro-computed tomography and histological analyses, we were able to prove that the use of silk^(+) tNGCs induced the growth of blood vessels from the adjacent tissue to the intraluminal neovascular formation. A significantly higher number of blood vessels in the silk^(+) group was found compared with autologous nerve transplants and silk^(–), accompanied by improved axon regeneration at the distal coaptation point compared with the silk^(–) tNGCs at 7 weeks postoperatively. In the 15-mm(critical size) sciatic nerve defect model, we again observed a distinct ingrowth of blood vessels through the tubular walls of silk^(+) tNGCs, but without improved functional recovery at 12 weeks postoperatively. Our data proves that macroporous tNGCs increase the vascular supply of regenerating nerves and facilitate improved axonal regeneration in a short-defect model but not in a critical-size defect model. Role of self-expanding metal stents in the management ofvariceal haemorrhage:Hype or hope?

Despite the advances of medical,endoscopic and radiological therapy over recent years the mortality rates of acute variceal haemorrhage are still 16%-20% and the medium term outcome has not improved in the last 25 years. Early transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt has proved to be an effective therapy for selected groups of patients with a high risk of re-bleeding and moderate liver disease. However,there is an unmet need for a therapy that can be applied in patients with a high risk of re-bleeding and advanced liver disease either as definitive therapy or as a bridge to permanent therapy. Selfexpanding metal stents can be placed without the need for endoscopic or fluoroscopic control and,once in place,will provide effective haemostasis and allow a route for oral fluids and nutrition. They can remain in place whilst liver function recovers and secondary prophylaxis is initiated. We review the results of 6 case series including a total of 83 patients and the first randomised controlled trial of self-expanding metal stents vs balloon tamponade(BT) in the management of refractory variceal haemorrhage. We report that self-expanding metal stents provide effective haemostasis and perform better than BT in refractory bleeding,where they are associated with fewer complications. Whilst the most effective place for self-expanding metal stents in the management algorithm needs to be determined by further randomised controlled trials,currently they provide an effective alternative to BT in selected patients.
