Selective toxicity of hydroxyl-rich carbon nanodots for cancer research

The toxicity of nanoparticles in a biological system is an integration of effects arising from surface functionali~ particle size, ionic dissolution, etc. This complexity suggests that generalization of a material＇s toxicity may be inappropriate. Moreover, from a medicinal point of view, toxicity can be used for treatment of malignant cells, such as cancer. In this stud~ highly biocompatible carbon nanodots （gCDs） were synthesized by reacting citric acid and urea in glycerol, which resulted in abundant hydroxyl functional groups on the particle surface. gCDs show excitation-dependent photoluminescence but with bright green to yellow emission. Importantly, a series of toxicity assessments showed that as-synthesized gCDs possessed exceptional biocompatibilities to various biological entities including 18 bacteria species, Petunia axillaris seedlings, and Artemia franciscana nauplii. Furthermore, the particles were shown to have low to no toxic effects on human embryonic kidney （hEK-293）, breast （MCF-7）, and oral squamous （CAL-27） carcinoma cell lines. Of particular interest, the gCDs displayed antiproliferative activities against ovarian choriocarcinoma cells （JAr/Jeg-3 cell lines）, which may be further explored for cancer drug discovery.

Assessing cotton defoliation, regrowth control and root rot infection using remote sensing technology

Cotton defoliation and post-harvest destruction are important cultural practices for cotton *** root rot is a serious and destructive disease that affects cotton yield and lint *** paper presents an overview and summary of the methodologies and results on the use of remote sensing technology for evaluating cotton defoliation and regrowth control methods and for assessing cotton root rot infection based on published *** reflectance spectra and airborne multispectral and hyperspectral imagery were used in these *** reflectance spectra effectively separated different levels of defoliation and airborne multispectral imagery permitted both visual and quantitative differentiations among defoliation *** ground reflectance and airborne imagery were able to differentiate cotton regrowth among different herbicide treatments for cotton stalk *** multispectral and hyperspectral imagery accurately identified root rot-infected areas within cotton *** from these studies indicate that remote sensing can be a useful tool for evaluating the effectiveness of cotton defoliation and regrowth control strategies and for detecting and mapping root rot damage in cotton *** with traditional visual observations and ground measurements,remote sensing techniques have the potential for effective and accurate assessments of various cotton production operations and pest conditions.

Titanium and its alloys are widely used in biomedical devices,***,due to its biocompati-bility and osseointegration *** fact,fungal(Candida spp.)infection has been identified as one of the key reasons causing the failure of the device that is inevitable and impactful to the ***,this study evaluated the surface morphology,surface chemical composition and Candida albicans adhesion on specimens of 16 binary Tialloys(-5 wt%of any one of the alloy elements:Ag,AI,Au,Co,Cr,Cu,Fe,In,Mn,Mo,Nb,Pd,Pt,Sn,V and Zr)compared with cp-Ti,targeting to seek for the binary Ti-alloys which has the lowest *** *** albicans cultures were grown on the specimens for 48 h,and colony forming units(CFUs)and real-time polymerase chain reaction(RT-PCR)were used to evaluate the biofilm formation *** electron mi-croscopy and confocal laser scanning microscopy confirmed the formation of *** biofilm on all specimens'surfaces,such that CFU results showed Ti-Mo,Ti-Zr,Ti-AI and Ti-V have less *** formed on the surfaces than ***-PCR showed Ti-Zr and Ti-Cu have significantly higher *** DNA concentrations than Ti-AI and Ti-V(Phereas Ti-Cu has even showed a statistically higher concentration than Ti-Au,Ti-Co,Ti-In and Ti-Pt(Phis study confirmed that Ti-Mo,Ti-Zr,Ti-AI and Ti-V have lower the occurrence of *** which might be clinically advantageous for medical devices,but Ti-Cu should be used in caution.

Controlling calcium and phosphate ion release of 3D printed bioactive ceramic scaffolds: An in vitro study

This paper characterizes in an in vitro setting the release of calcium (Ca) and phosphate (PO4) of 3D printed bioactive ceramic scaffold prepared from extrudable paste containing hydroxyapatite and β-tricalcium phosphate (β-TCP).hydroxyapatite and β-TCP were calcined at 800℃ for 11 h,fabricated into four experimental groups (100％ hA,100％ β-TCP,15％/85％ hA/β-TCP,and 15％/85％ hA/β-TCP (design)),sintered to 1100 ℃ for 4 *** and phosphorus concentrations were evaluated using ICP spectroscopy,and the release of Ca and PO4 ions during dissolution of the CaP-based scaffolds was measured by submerging in 0.05 mol/L Tris(hydroxymethyl)aminomethane-hC1 and maintaining a temperature of 37 ℃.The Ca and PO4 concentrations of the solutions were measured with the utilization of a calcium assay kit and a phosphate assay kit and read in a UV-visible *** 100％ hA scaffold group showed the greatest concentration of Ca ions (～1.9 mg/dL),but ultimately released at a lower amount as time increased;the 100％ hA scaffold also showed the lowest total amount of calcium ions released over the course of *** results for the 100％ β-TCP were on the opposite of the hA with the highest amount of calcium ion release over the *** the PO4 ion release showed a similar trend as those observed with Ca ions with an apparent difference in the 100％ hA scaffold *** was nearly 0 mg/dL of the phosphate ions released in the first 24 h,in comparison to the amount of Ca ions released during the same time *** various formulations can lead to different properties of these bioactive ceramic scaffolds,it is important to understand how the tailoring of this important biphasic material can impact the long-term outcome of an ever-important in vivo clinical trial in the future.

habitable Trinity

habitable Trinity is a newly proposed concept of a habitable environment. This concept indicates that the coexistence of an atmosphere （consisting largely of C and N）, an ocean （h and 0）, and a landmass （supplier of nutrients） accompanying continuous material circulation between these three components driven by the Sun is one of the minimum requirements for life to emerge and evolve. The life body consists of C, O, h, N and other various nutrients, and therefore, the presence of water, only, is not a sufficient condition. habitable Trinity environment must he maintained to supply necessary components for life body. Our habitable Trinity concept can also be applied to other planets and moons such as Mars, Europa, Titan, and even exoplanets as a useful index in the quest for life-containing planetary bodies.

Flammability risk assessment for oil spill response operations

Immediately following a spill at sea, released oil ranging from diesel to light crude and diluted bitumen, will initially weather through evaporation, resulting in an elevated concentration of light hydrocarbons in the air. As part of oil spill response operations, first responders use hand-held devices to monitor airborne concent- rations when approaching a spill. The feasibility of using numerical modelling as an additional tool to assess potential flammability and plan response operations in the spill area was explored in this study. The Lower Explosive Limit (LEL) is defined as the minimum concentration of a gas in air, in this case a mixture of evaporated hydrocarbons, which can produce a flash fire in the presence of an ignition source. This ignition source could be triggered by the vessel itself or by spill response operations. A framework was put into place, utilizing a three- dimensional hydrodynamic model (h3D), an oil spill model (SPILLCALC), and an air dispersion model (CALPUFF) to assess the risk of possible ignition of the hydrocarbon vapour in the event of a spill. The study looked at a hypothetical credible worst case tanker spill (16 500 m3) of diluted bitumen (cold lake winter blend) occurring at Arachne Reef in haro Strait, British Columbia, Canada. SPILLCALC provided one-minute averaged vapour fluxes from the water surface for each of 17 modelled pseudo-components which were used as inputs to CALPUFF. Using the predicted airborne concentrations of each pseudo-component, time-scaled to one-second averages, the flammability potential in the immediate spill area was determined at each grid point using Le Chatelier’s mixing equation. The approach describe here was developed as a proof of concept, and could be established as a real-time system, bringing valuable information in addition to hand-held devices during a spill response, or during a response exercise.
