*** There is a growing body of research supporting the idea that a plethora of health benefits can result from resistance training using a low volume,high-effort approach(e.g.,increased metabolic rate and bone mineral density,a reduction in blood pressure,and improved muscle quality and insulin sensitivity,among ***,muscular strength and muscle massprimary goals and benefits of participation in resistance trainingare independently strong predictors of longevity and quality of life. Thus,many have sought to identify how the manipulation of resistance training variables might lead to“optimal”adaptations in such outcomes,as evidenced by repeated attempts over recent decades to review the literature and provide consensus statements on this topic.5-10 One variable that is often hotly debated within resistance training is training to failure.

Cardiomyocytes differentiated from human induced pluripotent stem cells(ipSCs)are valuable for the understanding/treatment of the deadly heart diseases and their drug ***,the very much needed homogeneous 3D cardiac differentiation of human ipSCs is still ***,it is discovered surprisingly that Rock inhibitor(RI),used ubiquitously to improve the survival/yield of human ipSCs,induces early gastrulation-like change to human ipSCs in 3D culture and may cause their heterogeneous differentiation into all the three germ layers(i.e.,ectoderm,mesoderm,and endoderm)at the commonly used concentration(10μM).This greatly compromises the capacity of human ipSCs for homogeneous 3D cardiac *** reducing the RI to 1μM for 3D culture,the human ipSCs retain high pluripotency/quality in inner cell mass-like solid 3D ***,the beating efficiency of 3D cardiac differentiation can be improved to more than 95%in~7 days(compared to less than~50%in 14 days for the 10μM RI condition).Furthermore,the outset beating time(OBT)of all resultant cardiac spheroids(CSs)is synchronized within only 1 day and they form a synchronously beating 3D construct after 5-day culture in gelatin methacrylol(GelMA)hydrogel,showing high homogeneity(in terms of the OBT)in functional maturity of the ***,the resultant cardiomyocytes are of high quality with key functional ultrastructures and highly responsive to cardiac *** discoveries may greatly facilitate the utilization of human ipSCs for understanding and treating heart diseases.

The conventional approach for fabricating polydimethylsiloxane(pDMS)microfluidic devices is a lengthy and inconvenient procedure and may require a clean-room microfabrication facility often not readily ***,living cells can’t survive the oxygen-plasma and high-temperature-baking treatments required for covalent bonding to assemble multiple pDMS parts into a leak-free device,and it is difficult to disassemble the devices because of the irreversible covalent *** a result,seeding/loading cells into and retrieving cells from the devices are ***,we discovered that decreasing the curing agent for crosslinking the pDMS prepolymer increases the noncovalent binding energy of the resultant pDMS surfaces without plasma or any other *** enables convenient fabrication of leak-free microfluidic devices by noncovalent binding for various biomedical applications that require high pressure/flow rates and/or long-term cell culture,by simply hand-pressing the pDMS parts without plasma or any other treatment to bind/*** this method,multiple types of cells can be conveniently loaded into specific areas of the pDMS parts before assembly and due to the reversible nature of the noncovalent bonding,the assembled device can be easily disassembled by hand peeling for retrieving *** with 3D printers that are widely available for making masters to eliminate the need of photolithography,this facile yet rigorous fabrication approach is much faster and more convenient for making pDMS microfluidic devices than the conventional oxygen plasma-baking-based irreversible covalent bonding method.

Stress dependent rock physics models are being used more routinely to link mechanical deformation and stress perturbations to changes in seismic velocities and seismic anisotropy. In this paper, we invert for the effective non-linear microstructural parameters of 69 dry and saturated sandstone core samples. We evaluate the results in terms of the model input parameters of two non-linear rock physics models: A discrete and an analytic microstructural stress-dependent formulation. The results for the analytic model suggest that the global trend of the initial crack density is lower and initial aspect ratio is larger for the saturated samples compared to the corresponding dry samples. The initial aspect ratios for both the dry and saturated samples are tightly clustered between 0.0002 and 0.001, whereas the initial crack densities show more scatter. The results for the discrete model show higher crack densities for the saturated samples when compared to the corresponding dry samples. With increasing confining stress the crack densities decreases to almost identical values for both the dry and saturated samples. A key result of this paper is that there appears to be a stress dependence of the compliance ratio BN/BT within many of the samples, possibly related to changing microcrack geometry with increasing confining stress. Furthermore, although the compliance ratio BN/BT for dry samples shows a diffuse distribution between 0.4 and 2.0, for saturated samples the distribution is very tightly clustered around 0.5. As confining stresses increase the compliance ratio distributions for the dry and saturated samples become more diffuse but still noticeably different. This result is significant because it reaffirms previous observations that the compliance ratio can be used as an indicator of fluid content within cracks and fractures. From a practical perspective, an overarching purpose of this paper is to investigate the range of input parameters of the microstructural models

The rate and number of induced abortions in the US has declined steadily for nearly three decades. In contrast to this overall reduction, planned parenthood Federation of America abortion providers exhibit a persistent increase in both abortions and their market share percentage of total abortion procedures. For the period 1995-2014, estimated annual and cumulative excess abortions are calculated (planned parenthood Abortion Inflation Effect—ppAIE) to indicate the number of abortions which would have been averted if the pp utilization experience had been identical to that of Non-pp abortion providers. pp excess abortions grew steadily each year from 21,000 in 1996 to 258,200 in 2014, 28% of total abortions that year. The cumulative number of abortions added by the ppAIE from 1995-2014 was 3,025,560 or 12.5% of the 24,112,600 performed. planned parenthood has had a long-term and accelerating inflationary effect on the incidence and prevalence of abortion in the US.

There is no credible scientific opposition to the fact that a genetically distinct human life begins at conception and that an induced abortion is a death. Yet, abortion is not reported as a cause of death in the U.S. vital statistics system. Mortality patterns have profound implications for public policy. As a cause of death, we found abortion to be highly consequential, with large racial and ethnic disparities. Abortion represented 16.4% of non-Hispanic White deaths, but 61.1% and 64.0% of non-Hispanic Black and Hispanic deaths respectively. For Years of potential Life Lost (YpLL), the ubiquitous measure of premature death, abortion accumulated 63.1% of non-Hispanic White YpLL and 86.5% and 87.4% of non-Hispanic Black and Hispanic YpLL respectively. Further, as measured by the availability of valid data and resources allocated for research, there is evidence that the science community is not appropriately engaged on this crucial public health problem.

The magnitude of the overall prevalence and racial disparity in induced abortion suggests that it is a major influence on the demographic and socioeconomic composition of the population of the United States (US). However, the years of potential lives averted by induced abortion have not been systematically studied. We applied race-specific intra-uterine death estimates to the induced abortions occurring to non-Hispanic (NH) white and non-Hispanic (NH) black women in the US state of North Carolina in 2008. The resultant estimate of births averted by induced abortion was used to project years of potential life lost. All-cause detailed mortality data were used to compare induced abortion with other contributing causes of years of potential life lost before age 75 (YpLL 75). For NH whites, induced abortions in 2008 contributed 59% of total YpLL 75, and 1.5 times the total YpLL 75 from all other causes combined. For NH blacks, induced abortions in 2008 contributed 76% of total YpLL 75 and 3.2 times the total YpLL 75 from all other causes combined. Induced abortion is the overwhelmingly predominant contributing cause of preventable potential lives lost in the North Carolina population, and NH blacks are disproportionately affected.

Bayesian optimization(BO)has been leveraged for guiding autonomous and high-throughput experiments in materials ***,few have evaluated the efficiency of BO across a broad range of experimental materials *** this work,we quantify the performance of BO with a collection of surrogate model and acquisition function pairs across five diverse experimental materials *** defining acceleration and enhancement metrics for materials optimization objectives,we find that surrogate models such as Gaussian process(Gp)with anisotropic kernels and Random Forest(RF)have comparable performance in BO,and both outperform the commonly used Gp with isotropic *** with anisotropic kernels has demonstrated the most robustness,yet RF is a close alternative and warrants more consideration because it is free from distribution assumptions,has smaller time complexity,and requires less effort in initial hyperparameter *** also raise awareness about the benefits of using Gp with anisotropic kernels in future materials optimization campaigns.
