This study reports the concentrations of polybrominated diphenyl ethers and hexabromobiphenyl in bottom sediment of two rivers within the city of Cape *** the isolation of the target compounds by mechanical shaking technique,the routine analyses and structural elucidation of the target analytes were performed with high capillary gas chromatography with electron capture detection(GC-nECD)and gas chromatography-time-of-flight-mass spectrometry(GC-TOF-MS)techniques,*** mean concentrations of the total pBDE varied in the range of 0.06-2.47 ng/g in the Diep *** values were relatively higher in the Kuils *** mean concentrations of BB 153ranged from not detected(ND)-0.39 ng/***,the mean concentrations of BB 153 in the Kuils River were in the range of ND-1.21 ng/*** statistical analyses performed on these data showed that majority of the pBDE congeners,except BDE 209 had strong positive correlation with the total organic carbon(TOC).Although effluent discharges from nearby wastewater treatment plants were identified as important source of pBDEs,other notable sources,including grey water intrusion could contribute to the contamination of the upstream of both rivers.

Many atomic descriptors are currently limited by their unfavourable scaling with the number of chemical elements S *** length of body-ordered descriptors,such as the SOAp power spectrum(3-body)and the(ACE)(multiple body-orders),scales as(NS)^(ν)whereν+1 is the body-order and N is the number of radial basis functions used in the density *** introduce two distinct approaches which can be used to overcome this scaling for the SOAp power ***,we show that the power spectrum is amenable to lossless compression with respect to both S and N,so that the descriptor length can be reduced from O(N^(2)S^(2))to O(NS).Secondly,we introduce a generalised SOAp kernel,where compression is achieved through the use of the total,element agnostic density,in combination with radial *** ideas used in the generalised kernel are equally applicably to any other body-ordered descriptors and we demonstrate this for the(ACSF).

Metabolite transport processes and primary metabolism are highly interconnected. This study exam- ined the importance of source-to-sink nitrogen partition- ing, and associated nitrogen metabolism for carbon capture, transport and usage. Specifically, Arabidopsis aap8 （AMINO ACID pERMEASE 8） mutant lines were analyzed to resolve the consequences of reduced amino acid phloem loading for source leaf carbon metabolism, sucrose phloem transport and sink development during vegetative and reproductive growth phase. Results showed that decreased amino acid transport had a negative effect on sink development of aap8 lines throughout the life cycle, leading to an overall decrease in plant biomass. During vegetative stage, photosynthe- sis and carbohydrate levels were decreased in aap8 leaves, while expression of carbon metabolism and transport genes, as well as sucrose phloem transport were not affected despite reduced sink strength. However, when aap8 plants transitioned to reproductive phase, carbon fixation and assimilation as well as sucrose partitioning to siliques were strongly decreased. Overall, this work demonstrates that phloem loading of nitrogen has varying implications for carbon fixation, assimilation and source-to-sink allocation depending on plant growth stage. It further suggests alterations in source-sink relationships, and regulation of carbon metabolism and transport by sink strength in a development-dependent manner.

The chromosomal localization of 45S ribosomal RNA genes in Ambystoma jeffersonianum was determined by fluorescence in situ hybridization with 18S rDNA fragment as a probe (FISH-rDNA). Our results revealed the presence of rDNA polymorphism among *** populations in terms of number,location and FISH signal intensity on the chromosomes. Nine rDNA cytotypes were found in ten geographically isolated populations and most of them contained derivative rDNA sites. Our preliminary study provides strong indication of karyotypic diversification of *** that is demonstrated by intraspecific variation of 45S rDNA cytotypes. rDNA cytotype polymorphism has been described in many other caudate amphibians. We predict that habitat isolation,low dispersal ability and decline of effective population size could facilitate the fixation and accumulation of variable rDNA cytotypes during their chromosome evolution.

Steady-state and transient variations in frictional force observed in tribological experiments of mesothelial tissues sliding in lubricant were analyzed with a mathematical model to test the hypothesis that such phenomena are manifestations of elastohydrodynamic lubrication and,importantly,do not require physical contact between the sliding *** model incorporates three phenomena characteristic of elastohydrodynamic lubrication:thinning of the liquid layer between sliding surfaces under a normal load(“squeeze-out”),thickening of the liquid layer due to hydrodynamic pumping,and smoothing of the elastic surfaces caused by hydrodynamic pressure *** in soft mesothelial tissues sliding in lubricant showed variations in steady state friction with velocity,load,and lubricant *** non-steady sliding,the decay rate of frictional transients at the start of rotation varied with velocity,the amplitudes of these transients varied with the preceding periods without rotation,and frictional force varied during sinusoidal *** simulations were qualitatively similar to experimental results,supporting these *** lubricant viscosity increased lubricating layer thickness and lowered friction at low speeds and increased friction at high speeds,supporting hydrodynamic *** conclude that the frictional variations seen with sliding mesothelial tissues are consistent with elastohydrodynamic lubrication without contact between the sliding surfaces.

Diverse neurotoxic insults result in proliferation and hypertrophy of astrocytes. The hallmark of this response is enhanced expression of the major intermediate filament protein of astrocytes, glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAp). These observations suggest that GFAp may be a useful biomarker of neurotoxicity. To investigate this possibility, we administered prototype neurotoxicants to experimental animals and assessed the effects of these agents on the tissue content of GFAp, as determined by radioimmunoassay. A review of the background, design, and results of these experiments are presented in this paper. Our findings indicate that GFAp is a sensitive and specific biomarker of neurotoxicity.
