Refining pathological evaluation of neoadjuvant therapy for adenocarcinoma of the esophagus

Discrete element modelling of the quasi-static uniaxial compression of individual infant formula agglomerates

Infant formula is usually produced in an agglomerated powder form. These agglomerates are subjected to many transient forces following their manufacture. These can be difficult to quantify experimentally because of their small magnitudes and short durations, Numerical models have the potential to address this gap in the experimental data. The objective of the research described here was to calibrate a discrete element model for these agglomerates using experimental data obtained for quasi-static loading, and to use this model to study the mechanics of the particle response in detail. The Taguchi method was previously proposed as a viable calibration approach for discrete element models. In this work, the method was assessed for calibration of the model parameters （e.g., bond stiffnesses and strengths） considering three responses： the force at failure, strain at failure and agglomerate stiffness. The Weibull moduli for the simulation results and the experimental data were almost identical following calibration and the 37% characteristic stresses were similar. An analysis of the energy terms in the model provided useful insight into the model response. The bond energy and the normal force exerted on the platens were strongly correlated, and bond breakage events coincided with the highest energy dissipation rates.

A Dialectal Chinese Speech Recognition Framework

A framework for dialectal Chinese speech recognition is proposed and studied, in which a relatively small dialectal Chinese （or in other words Chinese influenced by the native dialect） speech corpus and dialect-related knowledge are adopted to transform a standard Chinese （or putonghua, abbreviated as pTH） speech recognizer into a dialectal Chinese speech recognizer. Two kinds of knowledge sources are explored： one is expert knowledge and the other is a small dialectal Chinese corpus. These knowledge sources provide information at four levels： phonetic level, lexicon level, language level, and acoustic decoder level. This paper takes Wu dialectal Chinese （WDC） as an example target language. The goal is to establish a WDC speech recognizer from an existing pTH speech recognizer based on the Initial-Final structure of the Chinese language and a study of how dialectal Chinese speakers speak putonghua. The authors propose to use contextindependent pTH-IF mappings （where IF means either a Chinese Initial or a Chinese Final）, context-independent WDC-IF mappings, and syllable-dependent WDC-IF mappings （obtained from either experts or data）, and combine them with the supervised maximum likelihood linear regression （MLLR） acoustic model adaptation method. To reduce the size of the multipronunciation lexicon introduced by the IF mappings, which might also enlarge the lexicon confusion and hence lead to the performance degradation, a Multi-pronunciation Expansion （MpE） method based on the accumulated uni-gram probability （AUp） is proposed. In addition, some commonly used WDC words are selected and added to the lexicon. Compared with the original pTH speech recognizer, the resulting WDC speech recognizer achieves 10-18% absolute Character Error Rate （CER） reduction when recognizing WDC, with only a 0.62% CER increase when recognizing pTH. Unmet supportive care needs in families of children with chronic health conditions: an Australian cross‑sectional study

Background The aim of this study was to identify similarities and diferences in the unmet supportive care needs(USCN)of families of children with major chronic health conditions(CHCs)using a universal need assessment *** A cross-sectional online survey involving parents of children with congenital heart disease(CHD),type 1 diabetes mellitus(T1D),cancer,and asthma diagnosed within the last 5 years recruited via social media and support ***-four items assessing the USCN across six domains(care needs,physical and social needs,informational needs,support needs,fnancial needs,child-related emotional needs)were responded to on a 4-point Likert scale[no need(1)to high need(4)].Descriptive statistics identifed the level of need,and linear regressions identifed factors associated with higher need domain *** to small numbers,the asthma group was excluded from comparisons across *** One hundred and ninety-four parents completed the survey(CHD:n=97,T1D:n=50,cancer:n=39,and asthma:n=8).parents of children with cancer were most likely to report at least one USCN(92%),followed by parents of children with T1D(62%).The fve most commonly reported USCN across CHCs were drawn from four domains:child-related emotional,support,care,and *** need items were included in the top fve needs for all conditions.A higher USCN was associated with a greater frequency of hospital visits and the absence of parental *** Using a universal need assessment tool,this is one of the frst studies to characterize USCN in families of children diagnosed with common *** proportions endorsing diferent needs varied across conditions,the most endorsed needs were similar across the illness *** suggests that support programs or services could be shared across diferent CHCs.

Hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC)is the most common liver-related complication seen in patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease(NAFLD)and non-alcoholic steatohepatitis(NASH)(1).NASH is strongly associated with type 2 diabetes mellitus(T2DM)but it has also been apparent for a number of years that T2DM is associated with an increased risk of HCC independent of the presence of NASH(2).A 2006 meta-analysis of retrospective cohort studies and case-control studies demonstrated an association between T2DM and an increased risk of HCC(3).International guidelines advocate surveillance for HCC in patients with NASH who have progressed to cirrhosis(4).An important clinical question is whether T2DM confers an increased risk of HCC once patients with NASH have progressed to *** a recent study by Yang and colleagues(5),the authors reported strong evidence that T2DM is an independent risk factor for HCC in patients with NASH-related *** and colleagues performed a retrospective analysis of a prospectively registered research dataset of patients with NASH-related cirrhosis.

Many atomic descriptors are currently limited by their unfavourable scaling with the number of chemical elements S *** length of body-ordered descriptors,such as the SOAp power spectrum(3-body)and the(ACE)(multiple body-orders),scales as(NS)^(ν)whereν+1 is the body-order and N is the number of radial basis functions used in the density *** introduce two distinct approaches which can be used to overcome this scaling for the SOAp power ***,we show that the power spectrum is amenable to lossless compression with respect to both S and N,so that the descriptor length can be reduced from O(N^(2)S^(2))to O(NS).Secondly,we introduce a generalised SOAp kernel,where compression is achieved through the use of the total,element agnostic density,in combination with radial *** ideas used in the generalised kernel are equally applicably to any other body-ordered descriptors and we demonstrate this for the(ACSF).

This study evaluates the mediation role of taxpayer egoism in the nexus between tax evasion intention(TEI)and its *** is measured as a composite variable(for mediation in the pROCESS macro)and then as a latent variable(for mediation in Analysis of Moment Structure Software AMOS).Further,the stringent assumptions of mediation analysis by Baron and Kenny(Strategic,and Statistical Considerations 51:1173-1182,1986)are challenged via assertions by Hayes(Introduction to Mediation,Moderation and Conditional process Analysis:A Regression-Based Approach,The Guilford press,2018).The proxies for TEI are the respondents'ethical attitudes toward taxation Determinants of tax evasion intention are grouped into perceived behavioral control attitude and subjective norms as per theory of planned behavior(TpB)and extant *** detailed variables adopted from the literature include tax awareness,tax information,tax complexity,perceived power of authority,tax morals,tax fairness,and trust in government.A totalof 151 responses were collected Mediation analysis was done via bootstrapping in the pROCESS macro and through AMOS.A plethora of studies focus on determinants of tax evasion,tax compliance and their intentions However,none combine analysis via the two tools ***,few challenge the old way of conducting mediation analysis The data provide statistical support for egoism's mediation in the effect of four determinants on tax evasion *** further confirms that many of the old preconditions for mediation are unnecessary given modern-day bootstrapping *** into determinants of TEI and egoism have been provided However,this study uses cross-sectional data Future studies must use longitudinal data or experimental manipulation to infer more specific effects.
