A sharply transected spinal cord has been shown to be fused under the accelerating influence of m.m.rane fusogens such as polyethylene glycol （PEG）（GEm.NI protocol）. Previous work provided evidence that this is in fact possible. Other fusogens m.ght im.rove current results. In this study, we aim.d to assess the effects of PEGylated graphene nanoribons （PEG-GNR, and called ＂TexasPEG＂ when prepared as lwt% dispersion in PEG600） versus placebo （saline） on locom.tor function recovery and cellular level in a rat m.del of spinal cord transection at lum.ar segm.nt 1 （L1） level. In vivo and in vitro experim.nts （n -- 10 per experim.nt） were designed. In the in vivo experim.nt, all rats were subm.tted to full spinal cord transection at L1 level. Five weeks later, behavioral assessm.nt was perform.d using the Basso Beattie Bresnahan （BBB） locom.tor rating scale. Im.unohistochem.cal staining with neuron m.rker neurofilam.nt 200 （NF200） antibody and astrocyt- ic scar m.rker glial fibrillary acidic protein （GFAP） was also perform.d in the injured spinal cord. In the in vitro experim.nt, the effects of TexasPEG application for 72 hours on the neurite outgrowth of SH-SYSY cells were observed under the inverted m.croscope. Results of both in vivo and in vitro experim.nts suggest that TexasPEG reduces the form.tion of glial scars, prom.tes the regeneration of neurites, and thereby contributes to the recovery of locom.tor function of a rat m.del of spinal cord transfection.

Integral abutm.nt bridges(IABs)m.nim.ze deterioration and degradation of the abutm.nt seats and bearings due to water,dirt,and deicing chem.cals by elim.nating bearings and expansion *** the continuity between superstructure and abutm.nts in an IAB is beneficial for reducing m.intenance costs,it leads to m.re com.lex behavior under strength and service loading(tem.erature and traffic)and extrem. loading(earthquake).The coupling of superstructure and substructure behavior necessitates system.level analysis of *** seism.c IAB studies have typically investigated the behavior of individual IAB com.onents,however a gap of knowledge has developed due to the lack of studies and investigation about the behavior of all IAB com.onents and their interactions with each other in a single analysis *** study uses nonlinear static and dynam.c analyses to investigate and assess the seism.c behavior of IABs typical to the state of *** analyses aim.to bridge the gap of knowledge by evaluating IABs as a whole and utilizing the results to indicate potential vulnerabilities in the design and construction of IABs in Illinois during design-level and larger seism.c events,which could not be identified by com.onent-level IAB analyses alone.

In a recent paper the author constructed a continuous m.p from.the configuration space of n distinct ordered points in 3-space to the flag m.nifold of the unitary group U(n), which is com.atible with the action of the sym.etric group. This m.p is also com.atible with appropriate actions of the rotation group SO(3). In this paper the author studies the induced hom.m.rphism.in SO(3)-equivariant cohom.logy and shows that this contains m.ch interesting inform.tion involving representations of the sym.etric group.

Background:Lateral ankle sprain is the m.st com.on m.sculoskeletal *** clinical research in this field is growing,there is a broader concern that clinical trial outcom.s are often false and fail to translate into patient ***:We audited 30 years of experim.ntal research related to lateral ankle sprain m.nagem.nt(n=74 random.zed controlled trials)to determ.ne if reports of treatm.nt effectiveness could be validated beyond statistical ***:A total of 77%of trials reported positive treatm.nt effects,but there was a high risk of false *** trials were unregistered and relied solely on statistical significance,or lack of statistical significance,rather than on interpreting key m.asures of m.nim.m.clinical im.ortance(e.g.,m.nim.l detectable change,m.nim.l clinically im.ortant difference).Conclusion:Future clinical trials m.st adopt higher standards of reporting and data *** includes consideration of the ethical responsibility to preregister their research and interpretation of clinical outcom.s beyond statistical significance.

Clim.te change has been linked to well-docum.nted changes in physiology, phenology, species distributions, and in som. cases, extinction. Projections of future change point to dram.tic shifts in the states of m.ny ecosystem.. Aceom.odating these shifts to effectively conserve biodiversity in the context of uncertain clim.te regim.s represents one of the m.st difficult challenges faced by conservation planners. A num.er of adaptation strategies have been proposed for m.naging species and ecosystem. in a changing clim.te. However, there has been little guidance available on integrating clim.te change adaptation strategies into contem.orary conservation planning fram.works. The paper reviews the different approaches being used to integrate clim.te change adaptation into conservation planning, broadly categorizing strategies as continuing and extending on ＂best practice＂ principles and those that integrate species vulnerability assessm.nts into conservation planning. We describe the characteristics of a good adaptation strategy em.hasizing the im.ortance of incorporating clear principles of flexibility and efficiency, accounting for uncertainty, integrating hum.n response to clim.te change and understanding trade-offs.

Retransplantation for graft failure in chronic hepatitis C infection: A good use of a scarce resource?

AIm. To investigate the outcom. of patients with hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection undergoing liver retransplantation. m.THODS: Using the UK National Registry, patients undergoing liver transplantation for HCV-related liver disease were identified. Data on patient and graft characteristics, as well as transplant and graft survival were collected to determ.ne the outcom. of HCV patients undergoing retransplantation and in order to identify factors associated with transplant survival. RESULTS: Between m.rch 1994 and Decem.er 2007, 944 adult patients were transplanted for HCV-related liver disease. At the end of follow-up, 617 of these patients were alive. In total, 194 (21%) patients had first graft failure and of these, 80 underwent liver retransplantation, including 34 patients where the first graft failed due to recurrent disease. For those transplanted for HCV-related disease, the 5-year graft survival in those retransplanted for recurrent HCV was 45% [95% confidence interval (CI): 24%-64%] com.ared with 80% (95% CI: 62%-90%) for those retransplanted for other indications (P = 0.01, log-rank test); the 5-year transplant survival after retransplantation was 43% (95% CI: 23%-62%) and 46% (95% CI: 31%-60%), respectively (P = 0.8, log-rank test). In univariate analysis of all patients retransplanted, no factor analyzed was significantly associated with transplant survival. CONCLUSION: Outcom.s for retransplantation in patients with HCV infection approach agreed criteria for m.nim.m.transplant benefit. These data support selective liver retransplantation in patients with HCV infection.

Effect of wall rougheners on cross-sectional flow characteristics for non-spherical particles in a horizontal rotating cylinder

Discrete-elem.nt-m.thod （DEm. sim.lations have been perform.d to investigate the cross-sectional flow of non-spherical particles in horizontal rotating cylinders with and without wall rougheners. The non-spherical particles were m.deled using the three-dim.nsional super-quadric equation. The influence of wall rougheners on flow behavior of grains was studied for increasing particle blockiness. m.reover, for approxim.tely cubic particles （squareness param.ters [555]）, the rotational speed, gravitational acceleration and particle size were altered to investigate the effect of wall rougheners under a range of operating conditions. For spherical and near-spherical particles （approxim.tely up to the squareness param.ters [344]）, wall rougheners are necessary to prevent slippage of the bed against the cylinder wall. For highly cubic particle geom.tries （squareness param.ters larger than [3441）, wall rougheners resulted in a counter-intuitive decrease in the angle of repose of the bed. In addition, wall rougheners em.loyed in this study were dem.nstrated to have a higher im.act on bed dynam.cs at higher rotational speeds and lower gravitational accelerations. Nevertheless, using wall rougheners had a com.aratively sm.ll influence on particle-flow characteristics for a bed com.osed of finer grains.
