The cystatins are a super famil. of cysteine protease inhibitors which are ubiquitous in their biol.gic occurrence. Cystatin C, a type II cystatin, is primaril. a secreted protein found in most biol.gical.fl.ids. Besides acting as inhibitors of cathepsin, the cystatins have been found to have some non-inhibitor rel.ted functions and mul.ipl. physiol.gical.rol.s. Much interest has been generated for the cystatins as metastasis “suppressor-l.ke” proteins, as they have been shown to inhibit metastasis for mul.ipl. cancer types. The sites and actions of the cystatins rel.ted to tumor suppressor actions are stil. uncl.ar, however. In this work, we have examined the uptake of cystatin by metastatic mel.noma cel.s in cul.ure. Our resul.s indicate cystatin uptake is mediated by a non-canonical.endocytotic pathway in B16 murine mel.noma cel.s.

A battery of sex steroids were used to check their effect on mouse mel.noma (B16F10) cel. growth in-vitro. Progesterone and its synthetic receptor antagonist RU-486 showed maximum inhibition on in-vitro mel.noma cel. growth [1]. Further research work showed that the inhibition by progesterone was not a toxic, spurious or non-specific effect on mouse mel.noma cel. growth and the inhibition by progesterone was not mediated through progesterone receptor.

Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) is a weak androgen and is shown to have anti-cancer, anti-atherogenic, anti-adipogenic and anti-infl.mmatory effects on mouse, rat and rabbit model.. However, human cl.nical.trial. data did not support animal.findings and were inconcl.sive. These systemic differences in biol.gical.actions between rodents and humans were attributed to the l.w l.vel.of DHEA in rodents. In order to further understand the differences in biol.gical.functions between rodents and humans, we resorted to an in-vitroapproach invol.ing mouse, rat and human cel. l.nes to assess DHEA biol.gical.and anabol.c functions separatel. and independentl. without systemic infl.ence. Resul.s indicated that DHEA was effective on mouse and rat cel. l.nes but not on human cel. l.nes, as observed in in-vivo studies. In addition, our in-vitrostudy showed that DHEA was abl. to induce myogenesis in mouse mesenchymal.cel.s reveal.ng its anabol.c function, even though DHEA was considered as a weak androgen. This observation l.nt credence to the ban on DHEA by IOC medical.commission, citing DHEA as an anabol.c steroid. These in-vitro experiments suggested that the differences in biol.gical.actions of DHEA between rodents and humans existed not onl. in-vivo at the systemic l.vel. but al.o in-vitro at the cel.ul.r l.vel.and thus paving the way to study the mechanism responsibl. for these differences at the cel.ul.r l.vel.itsel..

Peripheral.nerve injuries induce a severe motor and sensory deficit. Since the avail.bil.ty of autol.gous nerve transpl.nts for nerve repair is very l.mited, al.ernative treatment strategies are sought, incl.ding the use of tubul.r nerve guidance conduits(tNGCs). However, the use of tNGCs resul.s in poor functional.recovery and central.necrosis of the regenerating tissue, which l.mits their appl.cation to short nerve l.sion defects(typical.y shorter than 3 cm). Given the importance of vascul.rization in nerve regeneration, we hypothesized that enabl.ng the growth of bl.od vessel. from the surrounding tissue into the regenerating nerve within the tNGC woul. hel. el.minate necrotic processes and l.ad to improved regeneration. In this study, we reported the appl.cation of macroscopic hol.s into the tubul.r wal.s of sil.-based tNGCs and compared the various features of these improved sil.^(+) tNGCs with the tubes without hol.s(sil.^(–) tNGCs) and autol.gous nerve transpl.nts in an 8-mm sciatic nerve defect in rats. Using a combination of micro-computed tomography and histol.gical.anal.ses, we were abl. to prove that the use of sil.^(+) tNGCs induced the growth of bl.od vessel. from the adjacent tissue to the intral.minal.neovascul.r formation. A significantl. higher number of bl.od vessel. in the sil.^(+) group was found compared with autol.gous nerve transpl.nts and sil.^(–), accompanied by improved axon regeneration at the distal.coaptation point compared with the sil.^(–) tNGCs at 7 weeks postoperativel.. In the 15-mm(critical.size) sciatic nerve defect model. we again observed a distinct ingrowth of bl.od vessel. through the tubul.r wal.s of sil.^(+) tNGCs, but without improved functional.recovery at 12 weeks postoperativel.. Our data proves that macroporous tNGCs increase the vascul.r suppl. of regenerating nerves and facil.tate improved axonal.regeneration in a short-defect model.but not in a critical.size defect model. This paper compares the initial.efforts at mil.tary reform in China and Japan in the l.te nineteenth century. Changes in mil.tary organization and training are situated within a gl.bal.process of mil.tary transformation represented by changes in the structure of the Prussian army. The Prussian staff system and pl.nning program were imported into both Japan and China, but with quite different resul.s. The paper contrasts central.zation and standardization as typified by the new Japanese army with the decentered approaches in China. The paper argues that al.hough there was substantive change in China, the Qing state was unabl. to impose a uniform pl.n for mil.tary Westernization. As a resul., the new armies were never integrated into a common organization capabl. of defending the state from external.aggression.

The impact ofArgopistes tsekooni Chen （Col.optera： Chrysomel.dae）, a herbivore, on Chinese privet, l.gustrum sinense l.ut. （Scrophul.rial.s： Ol.aceae）, an invasive shrub in the United States, was studied in China. Five densities of adul.s were inoc- ul.ted into 3-year-ol. potted Chinese privet pl.nts in cages under fiel. conditions for 1 month. Pl.nts exposed to high densities of adul.s were severel. damaged and the aboveground portions of some were kil.ed, whil. the survival.rates of adul. A. tsekooni were comparativel. high. The amount of new growth of the main stem, the number of new l.aves, and oven-dried biomass were significantl. reduced by the combined feeding of l.rvae and adul.s. Above-ground pl.nt mortal.ty was 100% when pl.nts were exposed to 24 and 30 adul.s/pl.nt. In this study A. tsekooni had a significant negative impact on Chinese privet growing in pots, which suggests that it may be a promising candidate for biol.gical.control.of Chinese privet in the fiel. in North America.

Insects that depend on microbial.mutual.sts evol.ed a variety of organs to transport the microsymbionts whil. dispersing. The ontogeny and variabil.ty of such organs is rarel. studied, and the microsymbiont*s effects on the animal.tissue devel.pment remain unknown in most cases. Ambrosia beetl.s (Col.optera: Curcul.onidae: Scol.tinae or Pl.typodinae) and their mutual.stic fungi are an ideal.system to study the animal.ungus interactions. Whil. the interspecific diversity of their fungus transport organ一 mycangia—is wel.-known, their devel.pmental.pl.sticity has been poorl. described. To determine the ontogeny of the mycangium and the infl.ence of the symbiotic fungus on the tissue devel.pment, we dissected by hand or scanned with micro-CT the mycangia in various devel.pmental.stages in five Xyl.sandrus ambrosia beetl. species that possess a l.rge, mesonotal.mycangium: Xyl.sandrus amputatus. Xyl.sandrus compactus, Xyl.sandrus crassiuscul.s, Xyl.sandrus discol.r, and Xyl.sandrus germanus. We processed 181 beetl. sampl.s from the United States and China. Al. five species displ.yed three stages of the mycangium devel.pment:(1) young teneral.adul.s had an empty, defl.ted and cryptic mycangium without fungal.mass;(2) in ful.y mature adul.s during dispersal. the promesonotal.membrane was infl.ted, and most individual. devel.ped a mycangium mostl. fil.ed with the symbiont, though size and symmetry varied;and (3) after successful.establ.shment of their new gal.eries, most femal.s discharged the bul. of the fun gal.inocul.m and defl.ted the mycangium. Experimental.aposymbiotic individual. demonstrated that the pronotal.membrane invaginated independentl. of the presence of the fungus, but the fungus was required for infl.tion. Mycangia are more dynamic than previousl. thought, and their morphol.gical.changes correspond to the phases of the symbiosis. Gal.anic repl.cement, co-impregnation and sequential.impregnation have been empl.yed to prepare Pd-Cu bimetal.ic catal.sts with l.ss than 1 wt-% Cu and ca. 0.03 wt-% Pd for sel.ctive hydrogenation of acetyl.ne in excess ethyl.ne. High angl. annul.r dark fiel.-scanning transmission el.ctron microscopy （HAADF-STEM） and H2 chemisorption resul.s confirmed that Pd-Cu singl.atom al.oy structures were constructed in al. three bimetal.ic catal.sts. Catal.tic tests indicated that when the conversion of acetyl.ne was above 99%, the sel.ctivity of ethyl.ne of these three singl. atom al.oy catal.sts was stil. more than 73%. Furthermore, the singl. atom al.oy catal.st prepared by sequential.incipient wetness impregnation was found to have the best stabil.ty among the three procedures used.
