Phantom limb is a disabling neuropsychiatric condition among amputees resulting in pain and disturbance that impact their functions,quality of life,and autonomy.While pharmacological approaches appeared to be ineffec-tive,the emergence and integration of X-reality,including virtual reality,augmented reality,and mixed reality,might elevate the effectiveness of mirror therapy in managing phantom limb.The objective of this study is to review X-reality for managing phantom pain.A systematic search was conducted on PubMed,Scopus,Web of Science,PsycINFO,Embase,and CINAHL.Sixteen(n=16)studies containing 66 lower-limb and 53 upper-limb amputees were included for the review over the thematic framework of amputee characteristics and intervention designs,while thirteen(n=13)studies were further proceeded for the meta-analysis.We found eleven studies on virtual reality(n=11),four studies on marker-based augmented reality(n=4)and one study on mixed reality(n=1)with a total of 40 game/task themes involving,motor skills,motor control,and stimulus-sensing.Regardless,all these interventions adopted the movement representation strategies with different techniques.Overall,the X-reality interventions reduced the pain level of the amputees(mean difference:-2.30,95%CI,-3.38 to-1.22),especially the virtual reality subgroup(mean difference:-2.83,95%CI,-4.43 to-1.22).However,there were substantial heterogeneity and partially explained by the subgroup analysis on publication year.The strength of evidence was limited by case reports and case series in this review.

The nanohertz stochastic gravitational wave background from cosmic string loops and the abundant high redshift massive galaxies

Recently,pulsar timing array(PTA)experiments have provided compelling evidence for the existence of the nanohertz stochastic gravitational wave background(SGWB).In this work,we demonstrated that cosmic string loops generated from cosmic global strings offer a viable explanation for the observed nanohertz SGWB data,requiring a cosmic string tension parameter of log(Gμ)~-12 and a loop number density of log N~4.Additionally,we revisited the impact of cosmic string loops on the abundance of massive galaxies at high redshifts.However,our analysis revealed challenges in identifying a consistent parameter space that can concurrently explain both the SGWB data and observations from the james Webb Space Telescope.This indicates the necessity for either extending the existing model employed in this research or acknowledging distinct physical origins for these two phenomena.

Trends of seasonal forage yield changes of triticale in the southern Great Plains of the United States

Background:The focus of triticale breeding in the southern Great Plains of the United States has been to increase forage yield for autumn-winter seasons when most other forage species are dormant.This study aims to estimate the trends of seasonal yield changes over time.Methods:Yield trials had been conducted in a randomized complete block design for up to two decades.Seasonal yield changes over time were estimated using linear regression analysis.Results:The analysis revealed a significant positive relation between autumn forage yield(relative to common checks)and calendar years when the trials were conducted.The estimated improvement of autumn forage yield was about 1.9%per year on medium and heavy soil at Ardmore,Oklahoma,and about 5.4%per year on light soil at Burneyville,Oklahoma.However,winter forage yield change was minimal and the spring forage yield increase was negative,although this decline was not significant.Total forage yield improvements were about 0.6%and 0.7%per year at Ardmore and Burneyville,respectively.Similar results were also observed when years of cultivars'introduction were used instead.Conclusions:The results indicate a significant gain in autumn forage yield,but a minor gain in the total forage yield due to the yield tradeoff between the autumn and spring seasons.

Primary energy congestion of power systems

Primary energy has the potential to bring challenges to the reliability,economic,and eco-friendliness of global electric power systems.The concept of electric power security are proposed,including many factors that are not considered in power system reliability analysis,such as coal supply for power system,fuel price for electricity power market,carbon emissions of power generation,and so on.It is broader than power system reliability and security,which means that providing energy in the form of reliable,economical,and eco-friendly electric power.Following an account of existing blackout defence methods and systems,the processes of transforming various kinds of primary energy into electric power and the interactions between them are described,particularly with regard to flows of energy,capital,and information.Factors that limit the liquidity of these flows are defined as“generalized congestion”,and the challenges presented by primary energy are named“primary energy congestion”.China’s dilemma on coal supply for power generation is presented in some detail as an example of primary energy congestion.To cope with impacts of the primary energy on electric power systems,an idea is introduced to extend the scope of existing coordinated blackout defence systems to account for primary energy,which would lead to an integrated tool to provide decision support to power system operators accounting for primary energy congestion.

Low back pain(LBP),as a leading cause of disability,is a common musculoskeletal disorder that results in major social and economic burdens.Recent research has identified inflammation and related signaling pathways as important factors in the onset and progression of disc degeneration,a significant contributor to LBP.Inflammatory mediators also play an indispensable role in discogenic LBP.The suppression of LBP is a primary goal of clinical practice but has not received enough attention in disc research studies.Here,an overview of the advances in inflammation-related pain in disc degeneration is provided,with a discussion on the role of inflammation in IVD degeneration and pain induction.Puncture models,mechanical models,and spontaneous models as the main animal models to study painful disc degeneration are discussed,and the underlying signaling pathways are summarized.Furthermore,potential drug candidates,either under laboratory investigation or undergoing clinical trials,to suppress discogenic LBP by eliminating inflammation are explored.We hope to attract more research interest to address inflammation and pain in IDD and contribute to promoting more translational research.

Treatment of cervical dislocation with locked facets

Background Lower cervical dislocation with locked facets is common in cervical injury. The locked facets include unilateral and bilateral types. Different successful closed reduction rates has been achieved between unilateral and bilateral types by using rapid skull traction, which was commonly used to reduce the cervical disiocaUon. It is important to investigate a suitable management specific to patients with different types of cervical locked facets. Methods A total of 38 patients with cervical dislocation with locked facet due to cervical injury treated by rapid skull traction and operation from 1988 to 2005 were reviewed. Rapid skull traction was used in all the patients. Successful closed reduction rate was 88.0% in patients with bilateral cervical locked facets and that was 15.4% in those with unilateral cervical locked facets. These data were then statistically compared by Chi-square test. Patients who were reduced successfully underwent anterior cervical discectomy and fusion at the injured level, and those who failed in closed reduction received posterior open reduction and fixation. Results In this series, there was statistically significant difference （P〈0.05） in the rate of successful closed skull traction reduction between unilateral and bilateral locked facets dislocation. Unilateral cervical locked facets dislocation was not easily reduced by skull traction which was suitable for reduction of bilateral cervical locked facets dislocation. However, unilateral cervical locked facets dislocation can be reduced by posterior open reduction. Conclusions Unilateral cervical locked facets dislocation should be treated immediately with posterior open reduction and instrumentation. Bilateral cervical locked facets dislocation can be reduced by rapid skull traction firstly and anterior cervical discectomy and interbody fusion later.

Silicon Hall-effect sensors have been widely used in industry and research fields due to their straightforward fabrication process and CMOS compatibility.However,as their material property limitations,technicians usually implement complex CMOS circuits to improve the sensors’performance including temperature drift and offset compensation for fitting tough situation,but it is no doubt that it increases the design complexity and the sensor area.Gallium arsenide(GaAs)is a superior material of Hall-effect device because of its large mobility and stable temperature characteristics.Concerning there is no specified modelling of GaAs Hall-effect device,this paper investigated its modelling by using finite element method(FEM)software Silvaco TCAD®to help and guide GaAs Hall-effect device fabrication.The modeled sensor has been fabricated and its experimental results are in agreement with the simulation results.Comparing to our previous silicon Hall-effect sensor,the GaAs Hall-effect sensor demonstrates potential and reliable benchmark for the future Hall magnetic sensor developments.

The critical pressure for driving a red blood cell through a contracting microfluidic channel

When a red blood cell （RBC） is driven by a pressure gradient through a microfluidic channel, its passage or blockage provides a measure of the rigidity of the cell. This has been developed as a means to separate RBCs according to their mechanical properties, which are known to change with pathological conditions such as malaria infection. In this study, we use numerical simulations to establish a quantitative connection between the minimum pressure needed to drive an RBC through a contracting microfluidic channel and the rigidity of the cell membrane. This provides the basis for designing such devices and interpreting the experimental data.
