Screening Preeclamptic Cord Plasma for Proteins Associated with Decreased Breast Cancer Susceptibility

Preeclampsia, a complication of pregnancy characterized by hypertension and proteinuria, has been found to reduce the subsequent risk for breast cancer in female offspring. As this pro- tective effect could be due to exposure to preeclampsia-specific proteins during intrauterine life, the proteomic profiles of umbilical cord blood plasma between preeclamptic and normotensive pregnancies were compared. Umbilical cord plasma samples, depleted of 14 abundant proteins, were subjected to proteomic analysis using the quantitative method of nanoACQUITY ultra performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry with elevated energy mode of acquisitione （NanoUPLC-MSe）. Sixty-nine differentially expressed proteins were identified, of which 15 and 6 proteins were only detected in preeclamptic and normotensive pregnancies, ***, expression of 8 proteins （gelsolin, complement C5, keratin type I cytoskeletal 10, pigment epithelium-derived factor, complement factor B, complement component C7, hemoglobin subunit gamma-2 and alpha-fetoprotein） were up-regulated in preeclampsia with a fold change of 1〉 2.0 when compared to normotensive pregnancies. The identification of alpha-fetoprotein in pre- eclamptic umbilical cord blood plasma supported the validity of this screen as alpha-fetoprotein has anti-estrogenic properties and has previously been linked to preeclampsia as well as a reduced breast cancer risk. The findings of this pilot study may provide new insights into the mechanistic link between preeclampsia and potentially reduced breast cancer susceptibility in adult life.

Social computing is ubiquitous and intensifying in the 21st *** used to reference computational augmentation of social interaction through collaborative filtering,social media,wikis,and crowdsourcing,here I propose to expand the concept to cover the complete dynamic interface between social interaction and computation,including computationally enhanced sociality and social science,socially enhanced computing and computer science,and their increasingly complex combination for mutual *** recommends that we reimagine Computational Social Science as Social Computing,not merely using computational tools to make sense of the contemporary explosion of social data,but also recognizing societies as emergent computers of more or less collective intelligence,innovation and *** further proposes we imagine a socially inspired computer science that takes these insights into account as we build machines not merely to substitute for human cognition,but radically complement *** leads to a vision of social computing as an extreme form of human computer interaction,whereby machines and persons recursively combine to augment one another in generating collective intelligence,enhanced knowledge,and other social goods unattainable without each *** the example of science and technology,I illustrate how progress in each of these areas unleash advances in the others and the beneficial relationship between the technology and science of social computing,which reveals limits of sociality and computation,and stimulates our imagination about how they can reach past those limits together.

Misalignment Between Skills Discovered, Disseminated, and Deployed in the Knowledge economy

The knowledge economy is a complex and dynamical system,where knowledge and skills are discovered through research,diffused via education,and deployed by *** aligning the supply of new knowledge with the demand for practical skills through education is critical for developing national innovation systems that maximize human *** this paper,we evaluate the complex alignment of skills across the knowledge economy by creating an integrated semantic model that neurally encodes invented,instructed,and instituted skills across three major datasets:research abstracts from the Web of Science,teaching syllabi from the Open Syllabus Project,and job advertisements from Burning *** the high dimensional knowledge and skills space inscribed by these data,we draw critical insight about systemic misalignment between the diversity of skills supplied and demanded in the knowledge *** with insights from economic geography,demand for skills from industry exhibits high entropy(diversity)at local,regional,and national levels,demonstrating dense complementarities between them at all levels of the *** with the economics and sociology of innovation,we find low entropy in the invention of new knowledge and skills through research,as specialist researchers cluster within *** provide new evidence,however,for the low entropy of skills taught at local,regional,and national levels,illustrating a massive mismatch between diversity in skills supplied versus *** misalignment is sustained by the spatial and institutional mismatch in the organization of education by researchers at the site of skill invention over *** findings suggestively trace the societal costs of tethering education to researchers with narrow knowledge rather than students with broad skill needs.

exploring the mass gap:Black holes in green pea galaxies

We know about black holes primarily on two mass scales(e.g.,see Figure 22 of ref.[1]).Supermassive black holes inhabit the centers of galaxies,where they sometimes power active galactic nuclei(AGN).Their populations can be probed through AGN surveys,tidal disruption event surveys,and(in the closest galaxies)stellar and gas dynamics in the innermost regions where the black hole dominates the gravitational potential.
