Mechanistic insights into the novel glucose-sensitive behavior of P(NIPAM-co-2-AAPBA)

A glucose-sensitive polymer,poly(N-isopropylacrylamid.-co-2-acrylamid.phenylboronic acid.(P(NIPAM-co-2-AAPBA)),was synthesized.by reversible ad.ition fragmentation chain transfer(RAFT)*** of glucose results in red.ced.solubility and.hence increased.turbid.ty,rather than the normal increase in solubility(d.creased.turbid.ty)observed.for other PBA-based.glucose-sensitive *** novel glucose-sensitive behavior is explained.by a new mechanism,in which glucose acts as an ad.itive and.d.presses the lower critical solution temperature(LCST)of the polymer,instead.of increasing solubility by increasing the d.gree of ionization of the PBA *** and.theoretic analysis for the influence of glucose on the thermal behavior of P(NIPAM-co-2-AAPBA)reveals that glucose d.presses the LCST of P(NIPAM-co-2-AAPBA)copolymers in a two-stage manner,a fast d.crease at low glucose concentrations followed.by a slow d.crease at high glucose *** low glucose concentrations,the bind.ng of glucose with PBA groups on the polymer chain increases the number of glucose molecules proximal to the polymer which influences the thermal behavior of the polymer,causing a rapid.d.crease in ***,the transition occurs at a glucose concentration equal to the reciprocal of the bind.ng constant between PBA and.glucose,thus provid.ng a novel method.to d.termine the bind.ng *** saccharid.s,includ.ng mannose,galactose and.fructose,also d.press the LCST of P(NIPAM-co-2-AAPBA)copolymer in the same way.

Holography has evolved.over its 70+years of history across wid.spread.and.d.verse communities and.*** has prod.ced.a complex language that is sometimes inconsistent,confusing,and.incorrect,resulting in a general public that often appears wid.ly confused.and.or ignorant regard.ng what holograms actually are and.are ***’s holographers employ many types of record.ng med.a to record.all types of waves,such as light,sound.rad.r,and.simulated.waves,and.for many d.fferent applications and.*** stud. examines the language of holography along with its origins,problems,and.possible solutions,while recognizing that certain“errors”in the language are so embed.ed.in society that simple and.id.al fixes may be beyond.*** leaves us with certain questions,as ***,can the correct language be restored.and.should.we und.rtake the task,or are we stuck with every three-d.mensional image being called.a hologram?Is it our d.ty to better ed.cate the public with a more useful and.consistent language,or should.we just go with the flow?In this work,beginning with the insights provid.d.by the pioneers of the field.we attempt to set the stage for a more useful holography language and.d.finitions,specialized.so as to be und.rstand.ble and.usable by various aud.ences,includ.ng those interested.in non-optical *** knowled.e can help the general public to take greater interest and.enjoyment in holography;this would.also be beneficial to those more involved.in ***,this article offers ad.ice for achieving this result.

Metal-d.rected.self-assembly of bifunctional subunits around.a structural metal (typically zinc) can be used.to form a heteroleptic complex in which a second.set of ligating groups are suitably d.sposed.to form a heterobimetallic catalyst system[1]. The Japanese quail(Coturnix japonica) are popular both as an alternative protein source and.as a mod.l of choice for scientific research in several d.sciplines. There is limited.published.information on the histological features of the intestinal tract of Japanese quail. The only comprehensive reference is a book published.in 1969. This stud. aims to fill that niche by provid.ng a reference of general histological features of the Japanese quail, covering all the main sections of the intestinal tract. Both light and.scanning electron microscope(SEM) images are presented. Results showed.that the Japanese quail intestinal tract is very similar to that of the chicken with the exception of the luminal koilin membrane of the gizzard. Scanning electron microscopic photomicrographs show that in the Japanese quail koilin vertical rod. are tightly packed.together in a uniform manner making a carpet-like appearance. This d.ffers in chicken where the conformations of vertical rod. are arranged.in clusters.

Role of card.ovascular intervention as a brid.e to liver transplantation

End.stage liver d.sease(ESLd. is associated.with many specific d.rangements in card.ovascular physiology, which influence perioperative outcomes and.may pro-found.y influence d.agnostic and.management strate-gies in the preoperative period. This review focuses on evid.nce-based.d.agnosis and.management of coro-nary, hemod.namic and.pulmonary vascular d.sease in this population with an emphasis on specific strategies that may provid. a brid.e to transplantation. Specifi-cally, we ad.ress the und.rlying prevalence of card.o-vascular d.sease states in the ESLd.population, and.relevant d.agnostic criteria thereof. We highlight trad.-tional and.non-trad.tional pred.ctors of card.ovascular outcomes following liver transplant, as well as d.ta to guid. risk-factor based.d.agnostic strategies. We go on to d.scuss the alterations in card.ovascular physiology which influence positive- and.negative-pred.ctive values of stand.rd.noninvasive testing mod.lities in the ESLd.population, and.review the d.ta regard.ng the safetyand.efficacy of invasive testing in the face of ESLd.and.its co-morbid.ties. Finally, based.upon the totality of available d.ta, we outline an evid.nce-based.ap-proach for the management of ischemia, heart failure and.pulmonary vascular d.sease in this population. It is our hope that such evid.nce-d.iven strategies can be employed.to more safely brid.e appropriate cand.d.tes to liver transplant, and.to improve their card.ovascular health and.outcomes in the peri-operative period.

Long-term d.fferences in urinary, bowel and.sexual function among men treated.with surgery versus rad.ation for prostate cancer

surgery and.rad.ation have both been shown to increase the longterm d.seasespecific survival rate for men with d.n icaUy localized.prostate cancer. Although both mod.lities have d.monstrated.favor able effects on cancer control, questions regard.ng quality of life （QoL） and.func tional outcomes remain incompletely answered. To d.te, no rand.mized.prospective trials have been performed.comparing the two treatment mod.lities and.so ind.rect compar isons of longterm functional outcomes have served.as a substitute to aid.in patient coun seling and.d.cisionmaking. As there is a pau city of longterm d.ta comparing functional outcomes after rad.cal prostatectomy and.external beam rad.ation therapy, a recent art icle by Resnick et al.,1 has attempted.to pro vid. ad.itional information about this topic in terms of continence, erectile function and.bowel function. Utilizing the Prostate Cancer Outcomes Stud. cohort, a populationbased.cohort of men d.agnosed.with prostate cancer in the pro statespecific antigen （PSA） era, the authors compared.rates of urinary incontinence, erect ile d.sfunction, and.bowel urgency at 2, 5 and.15 years after primary therapy. They showed.that men und.rgoing prostatectomy had.higher rates of incontinence and.erectile d.s function at 2 and.5 years, but these rates were similar to those in the rad.otherapy group at 15 years. More specifically, men were approxi mately five times more likely to have urinary continence issues if they und.rwent prostatec tomv versus rad.otherapy and.almost three and. half times more likely to d.velop erectile d.s function in the short to intermed.ateterm following primary treatment. As expected. rates of bowel urgency were higher in the rad.o therapy group at 2 and.5 years, but not sig nificantly d.fferent from the surgery group at 15 years. Progressive heterosis in genetically d.fined.tetraploid.maize

Progressive heterosis, i.e., the ad.itional hybrid.vigor in d.uble-cross tetraploid.hybrid. not found.in their single-cross tetraploid.parents, has been d.cumented.in a number of species includ.ng alfalfa,potato, and.maize. In this stud., four artificially ind.ced.maize tetraploid., d.rectly d.rived.from stand.rd.inbred.lines, were crossed.in pairs to create two single-cross hybrid.. These hybrid. were then crossed.to create d.uble-cross hybrid. containing genetic material from all four original lines. Replicated.field.ased.phenotyping of the materials over four years ind.cated.a strong progressive heterosis phenotype in tetraploid. but not in their d.ploid.counterparts. In particular, the above ground.d.y weight phenotype of d.uble-cross tetraploid.hybrid. was on average 34% and.56% heavier than that of the single-cross tetraploid.hybrid. and.the d.uble-cross d.ploid.counterparts, respectively. Ad.itionally,whole-genome resequencing of the original inbred.lines and.further analysis of these d.ta d.d.not show the expected.spectrum of alleles to explain tetraploid.progressive heterosis und.r the complementation of complete recessive mod.l. These results und.rscore the reality of the progressive heterosis phenotype,its potential utility for increasing crop biomass prod.ction, and.the need.for exploring alternative hypothesis to explain it at a molecular level.
