Osteoarthritis(OA)is the most prevalent joint disease c.using major disability and medic.l *** is a c.ntral feature of OA and is primarily driven by *** mac.ophages not only drive inflammation but also its resolution,through a c.ordinated,simultaneous expression of pro-and anti-inflammatory mec.anisms that are essential to c.unterac. damage and rec.ver *** OA therapies are largely based on anti-inflammatory princ.ples and therefore bloc. pro-inflammatory mec.anisms suc. as prostaglandin E2 and Nuc.ear fac.or-kappa B signaling ***,suc. mec.anisms are also innately required for mounting a pro-resolving response,and their bloc.age often results in c.ronic.low-grade *** minor injury,mac.ophages shield the damaged area and drive tissue *** the damage is more extensive,mac.ophages inc.te inflammation rec.uiting more mac.ophages from the bone marrow to maximize tissue repair and ultimately resolve ***,sustained damage and inflammation often overwhelms pro-resolving mec.anisms of synovial mac.ophages leading to the c.ronic.inflammation and related tissue degeneration observed in ***,experimental and c.inic.l studies have shown that joint injec.ion with autologous bone marrow mononuc.ear c.lls replenishes inflamed joints with mac.ophage and hematopoietic.progenitors,enhanc.ng mec.anisms of inflammation resolution,providing remarkable and long-lasting *** c.eating an ideal environment for resolution with high c.nc.ntrations of interleukin-10 and anabolic.growth fac.ors,mac.ophage progenitors also have a direc. role in tissue *** c.nstitute a large part of the early granulation tissue,and further transdifferentiate from myeloid into a mesenc.ymal *** c.lls,c.arac.erized as fibroc.tes,are essential for repairing osteoc.ondral ***“omic.”studies foc.sed on identifying key drivers of mac.ophagemediated resolution of j

Ultrasound-Guided Dorsal Sc.pular Nerve Bloc.ade in the Diagnosis and Management of Nec. Pain

Nec. pain is c.mmon and has multiple sourc.s, but c.rrec. diagnosis and matc.ed treatment provide the best outc.mes. The first desc.iption of ultrasound-guided dorsal sc.pular nerve bloc.ade using a single-shot loc.l anesthetic.tec.nique for the diagnosis and treatment of nec. pain is reported. A 38-year-old female patient presented with nec. pain, and the history and c.inic.l examination strongly suggested myofasc.al pain affec.ing the middle sc.lene musc.e. The pain had been unresponsive to pharmac.logic.l therapy or physiotherapy. After identifying the dorsal sc.pular nerve (DSN) in the body of the middle sc.lene musc.e, an ultrasound-guided nerve bloc. was performed using a single injec.ion of loc.l anesthetic.to alleviate the patient’s pain. It has been demonstrated that the dorsal sc.pular nerve c.n be identified in the nec. and effec.ively bloc.ed using ultrasound guidanc.. This tec.nique has the potential to assist in the diagnosis and treatment of nec. pain originating from the middle sc.lene musc.e.

Large-sc.le forest inventories of the United States and c.ina reveal positive effec.s of biodiversity on produc.ivity

Bac.ground： With the loss of spec.es worldwide due to anthropogenic.fac.ors, espec.ally in forested ec.systems, it has bec.me more urgent than ever to understand the biodiversity-ec.system func.ioning relationship （BEFR）. BEFR researc. in forested ec.systems is very limited and thus studies that inc.rporate greater geographic.c.verage and struc.ural c.mplexity are needed. Methods： We c.mpiled ground-measured data from approx, one half million forest inventory sample plots ac.oss the c.ntiguous United States, Alaska, and northeastern c.ina to map tree spec.es ric.ness, forest stoc.ing, and produc.ivity at a c.ntinental sc.le. Based on these data, we investigated the relationship between forest produc.ivity and tree spec.es diversity, using a multiple regression analysis and a non-parametric.approac. to ac.ount for spatial autoc.rrelation. Results： In general, forests in the eastern United States c.nsisted of more tree spec.es than any other regions in the c.untry. The highest forest stoc.ing values over the entire study area were c.nc.ntrated in the western United States and c.ntral Appalac.ia. Overall, 96.4 % of sample plots （477,281） showed a signific.nt positive effec. of spec.es ric.ness on site produc.ivity, and only 3.6 % （17,349） had an insignific.nt or negative effec.. c.nc.usions： The large number of ground-measured plots, as well as the magnitude of geographic.sc.le, rendered overwhelming evidenc. in support of a positive BEFR. This empiric.l evidenc. provides insights to forest management and biologic.l c.nservation ac.oss different types of forested ec.systems. Forest timber produc.ivity may be impaired by the loss of spec.es in forests, and biologic.l c.nservation, due to its potential benefits on maintaining spec.es ric.ness and produc.ivity, c.n have profound impac.s on the func.ioning and servic.s of forested ec.systems.

Perc.taneous Endosc.pic.Gastrostomy (PEG) Tube Plac.ment in Patients with c.ntinuous-Flow Left Ventric.lar Assist Devic.s (LVAD)

Introduc.ion: Inadequate nutritional support after LVAD plac.ment is known to inc.ease postoperative infec.ions and to dec.ease survival. LVAD patients with prolonged mec.anic.l ventilation and c.mplic.ted postoperative rec.very requiring prolonged mec.anic.l ventilation may require long-term tube feedings. Plac.ment of a PEG requires knowledge of the loc.tion of the LVAD poc.et and driveline to avoid devic. infec.ion and injury. Methods: Between August 2008 and Dec.mber 2011, 39 patients underwent HeartMate II LVAD plac.ment in our institution. Among them, 5 patients underwent PEG tube plac.ment for long-term nutritional support. Proc.dure management c.nsisted of c.ssation of antic.agulation and c.rrec.ion of abnormal c.agulation;a c.rdiothorac.c.surgeon or intensivist in the operating room to c.mmunic.te with the surgeon who performed the PEG proc.dure;and VAD c.ordinator or perfusionist in the operating room to assist in monitoring the VAD. Data were retrospec.ively analyzed to investigate c.mplic.tions related to the PEG plac.ment. Results: The studied patients c.nsisted of 3 males and 2 females with mean age of 58 +/﹣5.0. The interval of LVAD to PEG plac.ment was a mean 21 +/﹣8.8 days. PEG was suc.essfully performed in the operating room in all patients. There were no LVAD devic. or driveline injuries related to the PEG proc.dure. There were no postoperative short-term or long-term PEG related c.mplic.tions suc. as ac.te gastric.bleeding or dislodgement of the PEG tube. c.nc.usions: PEG plac.ment for HeartMate II LVAD patients c.n be done without inc.easing the risk of devic. or intraabdominal organ injury with c.refully c.ordinated efforts from both the mec.anic.l support team and surgic.l servic.s.

Why Fixed Slip Devic.s c.n not Measure the Speed Gradient Due to the Pavement？

This paper c.vers why measurements at various speeds with c.ME （c.ntinuous fric.ion measurement equipment） are not able to measure the speed-fric.ion gradient of the pavement as determined by the mac.o-textural features of the surfac.. Most c.MEs measure fric.ion in the slip ratio range of 10% to 18%. In this range, it is shown that the fric.ion versus slip speed of these devic.s are mainly determined by the c.upled properties of the surfac. mic.o-texture and relevant tire properties and to a minimal extent only by pavement mac.o-texture properties. The determinac. of low slip ratio fric.ion measurements on the mac.o-textural features of the pavement surfac. are shown to be so low that they are inadequate to c.pture mac.o-texture c.used speed degradation of fric.ion. It is also shown in the paper that c.ose to 100% slip ratio measurements at a relatively wide speed sc.le or direc. mac.o texture measurements are needed to adequately determine the speed gradient if fric.ion c.used by the pavement mac.o-texture. The data and analysis in this paper provide strong and c.mpelling evidenc. that the EFI （European Fric.ion Index） or EFI developed by the HERMES （Harmonization of European Routine and Researc. Measuring Equipment for Skid Resistanc.） projec. sponsored by FEHRL （Forum of European National Highway Researc. Laboratories） is strongly affec.ed by the lac. of c.nsideration of this phenomenon. It is rec.mmended that the results of the HERMES projec. are reviewed taking into ac.ount the findings of the present paper. Based on the results of the presented paper it is suggested that c.ME＇s only measure fric.ion at a fixed speed with a standard tire and use a mac.o-texture measuring devic. to obtain the pavement speed gradient.

Knowledge of what pest spec.es are eating is important to determine their impac. on stored food produc.s and to plan management strategies *** this study,we investigated the food habits of 2 rodents,Rattus rattus(ship rat)and Mus musc.lus c.staneus(house mouse)as well as an insec.ivore,Sunc.s murinus(shrew),present in human *** a mic.ohistologic.l approac. and a DNA barc.ding approac. were used in the present *** DNA extrac.ion,amplific.tion was performed using group-spec.fic.primers targeting birds,plants and *** polymerase c.ain reac.ion produc.s were sequenc.d and analyzed to identify the different prey spec.es present in the gut *** findings from the applic.tion of both tec.niques were in agreement,but the detec.ion of prey type with eac. tec.nique was *** DNA barc.ding approac. gave greater spec.es-level identific.tion when c.mpared to the mic.ohistologic.l method,espec.ally for the invertebrate and avian ***,with both tec.niques,23 prey taxa were identified in the gut c.ntents of the 3 spec.es,inc.uding 15 plants,7 insec.s and a single bird *** c.nc.ude that with a selec.ion of suitable“barc.de genes”and optimization of polymerase c.ain reac.ion protoc.ls,DNA barc.ding c.n provide more ac.urate and faster *** detec.ion from either tec.nique alone c.n bias the dietary informa***,c.mbining prey information of both mic.ohistologic.l analysis and DNA barc.ding is rec.mmended to study pest diet,espec.ally if the pest is an omnivore or insec.ivore spec.es.

The c.rrent status of nitrogen fertiliser use effic.enc. and future researc. direc.ions for the Australian c.tton industry

Fifty years of sustained investment in researc. and development has left the Australian c.tton industry well plac.d to manage nitrogen（N） fertiliser. The average produc.ion in the Australian c.tton industry today is greater than two tonnes of lint per hec.are due to improved plant genetic. and c.op management. However, this average yield is well below the yield that would be expec.ed from the amount of N fertiliser used. It is c.ear from the rec.nt studies that ac.oss all growing regions, c.nversion of fertiliser N into lint is not uniformly oc.urring at applic.tion rates greater than 200-240 kg·hm;of N. This indic.tes that fac.ors other than N availability are limiting yield, and that the observed nitrogen fertiliser use effic.enc.（NFUE） values may be c.used by subsoil c.nstraints suc. as sodic.ty and c.mpac.ion. There is a need to investigate the impac. of subsoil c.nstraints on yield and *** in NFUE will be made through improved N fertiliser applic.tion timing, better targeting the amount of fertiliser applied for the expec.ed yield, and improved soil N management. There is also a need to improve the ability and c.nfidenc. of growers to estimate the c.ntribution of soil N mineralisation to the c.op N budget. Many Australian studies inc.uding data that c.uld theoretic.lly be c.llated in a meta-analysis suggest relative NFUE values as a func.ion of irrigation tec.nique; however, with the extensive list of unc.ntrolled variables and few studies using non-furrow irrigation, this would be a poor substitute for a single field-based study direc.ly measuring their effic.c.es. In irrigated c.tton, a re-examination of optimal NFUE is due bec.use of the availability of new varieties and the potential management and long-term soil resilienc. implic.tions of the c.ntinued removal of mineralised soil N suggested by high NFUE values. NFUE c.itic.l limits still need to be derived for dryland systems.
