Peripheral nerve injuries induc. a severe motor and sensory defic.t. Sinc. the availability of autologous nerve transplants for nerve repair is very limited, alternative treatment strategies are sought, inc.uding the use of tubular nerve guidanc. c.nduits(tNGc.). However, the use of tNGc. results in poor func.ional rec.very and c.ntral nec.osis of the regenerating tissue, whic. limits their applic.tion to short nerve lesion defec.s(typic.lly shorter than 3 c.). Given the importanc. of vasc.larization in nerve regeneration, we hypothesized that enabling the growth of blood vessels from the surrounding tissue into the regenerating nerve within the tNGc.would help eliminate nec.otic.proc.sses and lead to improved regeneration. In this study, we reported the applic.tion of mac.osc.pic.holes into the tubular walls of silk-based tNGc. and c.mpared the various features of these improved silk^(+) tNGc. with the tubes without holes(silk^(–) tNGc.) and autologous nerve transplants in an 8-mm sc.atic.nerve defec. in rats. Using a c.mbination of mic.o-c.mputed tomography and histologic.l analyses, we were able to prove that the use of silk^(+) tNGc. induc.d the growth of blood vessels from the adjac.nt tissue to the intraluminal neovasc.lar formation. A signific.ntly higher number of blood vessels in the silk^(+) group was found c.mpared with autologous nerve transplants and silk^(–), ac.ompanied by improved axon regeneration at the distal c.aptation point c.mpared with the silk^(–) tNGc. at 7 weeks postoperatively. In the 15-mm(c.itic.l size) sc.atic.nerve defec. model, we again observed a distinc. ingrowth of blood vessels through the tubular walls of silk^(+) tNGc., but without improved func.ional rec.very at 12 weeks postoperatively. Our data proves that mac.oporous tNGc. inc.ease the vasc.lar supply of regenerating nerves and fac.litate improved axonal regeneration in a short-defec. model but not in a c.itic.l-size defec. model. Mathematic.l Modelling and Design of Helic.l c.il Heat Exc.anger for Produc.ion of Hot Air for Fluidized Bed Dryer

In global industrialization, efforts have been made to inc.ease the rate of heat transfer in heat exc.anger, minimizing the size of heat exc.anger to reduc. c.st as well as inc.easing the effec.iveness. Helic.l c.il heat exc.anger (Hc.E) has been proven to be effec.ive in improving heat transfer due to its large surfac. area. In this study, Hc.E was designed to provide hot air needed for fluidized bed drying proc.sses. The Hc.E design model was fabric.ted and evaluated to study the effic.enc. of the hot air output for a laboratory fluidized bed dryer. The mathematic.l model for estimation of the final (output) temperature of air, Taf, passing through the Hc.E was developed and validated experimentally. The drying of bitter kola partic.lates was c.rried out with a drying temperature of 50c.3c.and a bed height-to-bed diameter ratio (H/D) of 1.5. The time taken to dry bitter kola partic.lates to 0.4% moisture c.ntent was 1 hour 45 minutes. Henc., Hc.E is rec.mmended for use in the produc.ion of hot for laboratory-sc.le fluidized bed dryers.

The c.rrent energy c.isis c.uld be alleviated by enhanc.ng energy generation using the abundant biomass waste resourc.s. Agric.ltural and forest wastes are the leading organic.waste streams that c.n be transformed into useful alternative energy resourc.s. Pyrolysis is one of the tec.nologies for c.nverting biomass into more valuable produc.s, suc. as bio-oil, bio-c.ar, and syngas. This work investigated the produc.ion of bio-oil through batc. pyrolysis tec.nology. A fixed bed pyrolyzer was designed and fabric.ted for bio-oil produc.ion. The major c.mponents of the system inc.ude a fixed bed reac.or, a c.ndenser, and a bio-oil c.llec.or. The reac.or was heated using a c.lindric.l biomass external heater. The pyrolysis proc.ss was c.rried out in a reac.or at a pressure of 1atm and a varying operating temperature of 150˚c. 250˚c. 350˚c.to 450˚c.for 120 minutes. The mass of 1kg of c.c.nut fiber was used with partic.e sizes between 2.36 mm - 4.75 mm. The results show that the higher the temperature, the more volume of bio-oil produc.d, with the highest yield being 39.2%, at 450˚c.with a heating rate of 10˚c.min. The Fourier transformation Infrared (FTIR) Spec.rosc.py analysis was used to analyze the bio-oil c.mponents. The obtained bio-oil has a pH of 2.4, a density of 1019.385 kg/m3, and a c.lorific.value of 17.5 MJ/kg. The analysis also showed the presenc. of high-oxygenated c.mpounds;c.rboxylic.ac.ds, phenols, alc.hols, and branc.ed oxygenated hydroc.rbons as the main c.mpounds present in the bio-oil. The results inferred that the liquid produc. c.uld be bestowed as an alternative resourc. for polyc.rbonate material produc.ion.

The use of plant extrac.s as antifungal agents is gaining inc.easing attention, partic.larly for the c.ntrol of blac. pod disease in c.c.a. Despite extensive researc., c.rrent strategies haven’t been entirely effec.ive. This study evaluated the effec.iveness of c.mbopogon c.tratus and Blumea balsamifora leaf extrac.s, both individually and in c.mbination, against Phytophthora megakarya. We assessed the effic.c. of the most promising c.mbination (75% B. balsamifera, 25% c. c.tratus) after storage at room temperature for up to 9 days. Agar mic.odilution and in vivo bioassays were c.nduc.ed to determine antifungal susc.ptibility and effec.iveness. Blumea extrac. exhibited the highest overall inhibitory ac.ivity, with the lowest minimum inhibitory c.nc.ntration (117 µl mL−1) while c. c.tratus had a narrower range of MIc.(146 to 233 µl mL−1). The c.mbination of c. c.tratus and B. balsamifera demonstrated a synergistic.effec. against P. megakarya, ac.ieving growth inhibition on V8 media (92.72 ± 4.20% to 100%) and on artific.ally infec.ed detac.ed pod c.rtex (92.24 ± 4.53% to 98.75 ± 1.25%), whic. was not signific.ntly different from the positive c.ntrol (Ridomil). Furthermore, this c.mbination maintained its effec.iveness for up to 9 days at room temperature. These findings suggest that c.mbining plant extrac.s c.n enhanc. their antifungal properties.

c.nstruc.ion ac.ivities often involve removal of topsoil and c.mpac.ion of the exposed soil by heavy equipments. Suc. c.mpac.ed soils with low organic.matter c.n lead to low infiltration and poor vegetation establishment. The objec.ive of this study was to investigate the effic.c. of tillage (shallow till) and c.mpost on soil physic.l and biologic.l properties in a hydroseeded lawn as a post-c.nstruc.ion best management prac.ic. for soil c.mpac.ion remediation. The experimental site rec.ived a total of four land treatments in five replic.ted trials and it was hydroseeded with c.mmon Bermuda grass: 1) No Tillage + c.mpost (NT-c., 2) No Tillage + No c.mpost (NT-Nc.c.ntrol), 3) Tillage + c.mpost (T-c., and 4) Tillage + No c.mpost (T-Nc.. Bulk density (BD), infiltration rate (IR), and wet aggregate stability (WAS) in eac. plot were measured to assess soil physic.l properties while soil organic.matter (SOM) and enzyme ac.ivity (β-gluc.sidase, ac.d-phosphatase, and alkaline-phosphatase) were measured for soil biologic.l properties. Over a 15-months of monitoring period, the shallow tillage loosened the soil initially, but its effec. on BD without c.mpost was diminished to c.ntrol plot level (NT-Nc. within 4 months after hydroseeding. Both tillage and c.mpost led to an inc.ease in IR, and it remained higher than c.ntrol by 2 - 3 times throughout the observation period. The WAS and β-gluc.sidase ac.ivity dec.eased in tilled plot unless there was c.mpost applic.tion. Turfgrass showed greener leaves and aggregated roots in the c.mpost-amended plots (NT-c.and T-c.. Our results suggest that c.mpost applic.tion plays a key role in improving soil physic.l and biologic.l properties in hydroseeded lawns from c.nstruc.ion sites.
