As the science and engineering of biomaterials continues to expand with increased emphasis on the development of nanomaterials and tissue engineering scaffolds,emphasis also must be placed on appropriate and adequate approaches to the in vivo and in vitro evaluation of biomaterial biocompatibility/biological response *** article presents six topic areas that should be addressed by investigators as they move forward in the development of new systems for regenerative *** certainly,there are other areas that require attention to detail and a more complete understanding of the strengths and weaknesses of various experimental approaches to biomaterial/biological response *** small number of issues addressed in this article is only meant to bring to the attention of prospective investigators and authors,the importance of the development of adequate and appropriate evaluation techniques that address the unique features of biomaterials utilized in the development of new medical devices.

Recent advances with Pd containing catalysts for the selective hydrogenation of acetylene are described. The overview classifies enhancement of catalytic proper- ties for monometallic and bimetallic Pd catalysts. Activity/ selectivity of Pd catalysts can be modified by controllingparticle shape/morphology or immobilisation on a support which interacts strongly with Pd particles. In both cases enhanced ethylene selectivity is generally associated with modifying ethylene adsorption strength and/or changes to hydride formation. Inorganic and organic selectivity modifiers （i.e., species adsorbed onto Pd particle surface） have also been shown to enhance ethylene selectivity. Inorganic modifiers such as TiO2 change Pd ensemble size and modify ethylene adsorption strength whereas organic modifiers such as diphenylsulfide are thought to create a surface template effect which favours acetylene adsorption with respect to ethylene. A number of metals and synthetic approaches have been explored to prepare Pd bimetallic catalysts. Examples where enhanced selectivity is observed are generally associated with decreased Pd ensemble size and/or hindering of the ease with which an unselective hydride phase is formed for Pd. A final class of bimetallic catalysts are discussed where Pd is not thought to be the primary reaction site but merely acts as a site where hydrogen dissociation and spillover occurs onto a second metal （Cu or Au） where the reaction takes place more selectively.

The addition of Au as a promoter/modifier for alumina supported Co catalyst has been studied by combined in-situ high temperature, high pressure Fourier transform infrared （FTIR） and on-line gas chromatography. The combination of these tools permitted the state of the active catalyst surface to be monitored while following the elution of reaction products during the first 5-7 h on stream of the catalyst. The catalysts under study were a 10%Co/ A1203 and a 2.5%Au/10%Co/A1203. Samples were characterised before use using Raman and temperature programmed reduction （TPR）. During the initial stages of reaction, hydrocarbons were built up on the surface of the catalyst as monitored by FTIR and the nature and amount of these species were assessed in terms of CH2/CH3 ratio and the density of these alkyl fragments by employing absorption coefficients for the individual components. The nature and reducibility of the Co particles were modified by the presence of Au while the later also shifted the CO/ H2 balance by acting as an effective water-gas shift catalyst during the early stages of reaction. This characteristic was lost during reaction as a consequence of redistribution of the two metallic phases.

We quantified microhabitat use by white-footed mice Peromyscus leucopus in forest and old-field habitats occupied by Morrow＇ s honeysuckle Lonicera morrowii, an invasive exotic shrub imported from Japan. Microhabitat characteristics were compared between trails used by mice （ n = 124） and randomly selected trails （ n = 127） in 4 study plots located at Fort Necessity National Battlefield, Farmington, Pennsylvania, USA. We compared 10 mierohabitat variables between used and random trails using non-metric multidimensional scaling （NMDS） and classification and regression tree （CART） analysis. Trails used by mice were statistically different from randomly selected trails in both forested plots （ P 〈 0. 008） and old-field plots （ P 〈 0. 001 ）. In the forested plots, trails of white-footed mice were more often associated with a greater percent cover （% cover） of coarse woody debris （CWD） than were randomly selected trails. In the old-field plots, mouse trails were commonly characterized by having a lower % cover of exotic herbaceous vegetation, a greater % cover of shrubs, and a greater % cover of Morrow＇ s honeysuckle than randomly selected trails. Our study indicates that white-footed mice do not move randomly and prefer areas of high structural complexity, thereby showing significant microhabitat preference. The preference of white-footed mice for areas with a relatively high percent cover of Morrow＇s honeysuckle could 1 ） be a factor in the aggressive nature of the exotic honeysuckle shrub＇s spread throughout the Battlefield or 2） cause the shrub to spread even faster into adjacent areas not yet occupied by Morrow＇ s honeysuckle

Dendritic cell(DC)-based vaccines have shown promising therapeutic results in cancer and some immune *** is critical to track in vivo migration behaviours of DCs and monitor the whole process dynamically and *** iron oxide(SPIO)nanoparticles are chosen for DC labelling under magnetic resonance imaging(MRI)because of their proven biosafety as contrast ***,when used for cell labelling,sensitive biological indicators such as cell autophagy may be helpful to better understand the process and improve the probe ***,lactosylated N-Alkyl polyethylenimine coated SPIO nanoparticles are used for DC *** probe shows satisfactory cell labelling efficiency and low *** this study,autophagy was used as a key factor to understand how DCs react to nanoparticles after *** results demonstrate that the nanoparticles can induce protective autophagy in DCs,as inhibition of the autophagy flux could lead to cell ***,the nanoparticles induced autophagy could promote DC maturation which is an essential process for its migration and antigen *** induced DC maturation is known to enhance the vaccine functions of DCs,therefore,our results suggest that beyond the MRI tracking ability,this probe might enhance therapeutic immune activation as well.

Food sharing is a prosocial behavior consisting of the unresisted transfer of monopolizable food from a possessor to another individual(Feistner and McGrew 1989;Stevens and Gilby 2004).Despite the cost for donors(i.e.,loss of the food),intraspecifc food sharing occurs in various insects,fsh,birds,and aquatic,terrestrial,and arboreal mammals(Liévin‐Bazin et al.2019;Carter et al.2020).By far,most food sharing is intraspecifc,and takes place while possessors are in the process of ***,we describe the remarkable case of a captive chimpanzee,Pan troglodytes,regularly dispensing food to another primate species(baboons,Papio hamadryas)in a neighboring *** discuss likely causes and functions of this interspecifc altruistic *** were made in Xi’an Qinling Wildlife Park,Shaanxi Province,China(34°02ʹ56.22″N,108°51ʹ48.60″E),where two adult chimpanzees and a group of around 40-50 baboons lived in adjacent *** female chimpanzee(AiAi)was the elderly mother of the male(DuoDuo,or DD).At feeding times,AiAi usually ate near the door to the chimpanzees’indoor area,and she almost never interacted with the baboon *** baboon group consisted of two one-male *** recorded behaviors using focal-animal sampling(for information about subjects and methods,see Supplementary Materials).

Exotic bush honeysuckles (Lonicera spp.) are becoming increasingly common in the eastern and mid-western United States, but little is known about their impacts on invertebrates. We used a modified leaf vacuum to sample invertebrates in the shrub strata and understory of three shrub types (and open plots in the understory): single Morrow’s honeysuckle (L. morrowii A. Gray) shrubs, single native southern arrowwood (Viburnum recognitum Fernald) shrubs, and dense thickets of Morrow’s honeysuckle, in southwestern PA, USA during 2004 and 2005. We also assessed the degree of herbivory on the two species of shrubs. Within the shrub strata, invertebrate biomass was lower in southern arrowwood shrubs, but there was no difference in invertebrate abundance or family richness. Invertebrate abundance and richness were lowest in August, but there was no difference in biomass among the months. Invertebrate abundance, biomass, and family richness were lowest in the understory below dense thickets of Morrow’s honeysuckle. Overall, the percent cover of herbs was the pr

This special issue of Regenerative Biomaterials presents 13 manuscriptsprovided by participants of the China–US Forum on GrandChallenges for Biomaterials in the 21st Century. This forum washeld on November 17, 2015, in Chengdu, China and was chaired bythe Editor of Regenerative Biomaterials, Professor Xingdong Zhangand Professor Nicholas Peppas. The participants of this forum wereinternationally recognized experts from the United States ofAmerica and the Peoples Republic of China. It is noteworthy thatthe United States speakers were members of the National Academyof Engineering, Section 2. Bioengineering, and most of the Chinesespeakers were members of the Chinese Academy of Engineering orthe Chinese Academy of Sciences. The overlying theme of this forumand this resultant special issue is the impact that the biological environmentin which biomaterials will be utilized is now recognized asproviding a wide variety of significant and impactful challenges thatmust be overcome if biomaterials are to achieve clinical application.
